With a new architecture such as this it is hard to compare head to head, as there really isn’t anything currently available that’ll provide a match, since AMD’s 760MP platform is still forthcoming. We choose to setup two identical systems featuring the same hardware configuration so any differences in benchmarks could be solely attributed to the CPUs/motherboard. One system will run a dual 1.7GHz Xeon DP configuration whereas the other will be running a dual 1GHz/256Kb Pentium III Xeon configuration.
Naturally we set out to run both systems under optimal conditions suited for a high-end workstation and choose our other components to fit that purpose. Needless to say that we won’t be looking at any server applications or benchmarks as that isn’t the market segment Intel is catering to with their Xeon DP.
