Benchmark evaluation

By: Sander Sassen

We could have run the usual set of benchmarks that we normally use to benchmark consumer level products, CPUs, motherboards etc. but in this case we’re looking at a high-end workstation platform that will not be running Office 2000 or some other rather dull office application. Normally high-end workstation are used for CAD/CAM, audio/video editing and creation, as well as rendering, so we thought it would be wise to take a look at some benchmarks that actually focus on those kind of applications.

Benchmarks that we’ll be using to determine the performance increase, if any, of the new Xeon DP platform over that of the previous fastest x86 workstation will be SYSmark 2001, SiSoft Sandra 2001, SPECviewperf, 3Dmark 2001 and Video2000. All of these packages have their merits and drawbacks, but the whole benchmark suite is focused more on the multimedia/audio/video applications than the average suite of office benchmarks and will thus give a better insight into the Xeon DP’s performance.

Benchmark applications
  • SYSmark 2001, used to measure office application performance, including Adobe Photoshop 6.0, Adobe Premiere 6.0 and Macromedia Dreamweaver and Flash 5.
  • SiSoft Sandra 2001, used to measure the raw CPU performance of the platform, its used as an indicator only, to determine whether this performance is put to good use or whether there’s any excessive overhead .
  • SPECviewperf, the de-facto OpenGL benchmark, used to benchmark professional OpenGL performance and compatibility, under a number of different conditions.
  • 3DMark 2001, another often used graphics intensive benchmark, although targeted towards gaming, it does an excellent job in taxing the latest features found in DirectX.
  • Video2000, used to evaluate the video quality, performance and features available in the graphics adapter.
