Performance - Quake 3 Arena By: Dan Mepham |

Quake 3 Arena has always performed well on nVidia cards, and this situation is no different. The Kyro II is defeated across the board both by the more expensive GeForce 2 Pro, and by the similarly-priced GeForce 2 GTS. While we weren't able to include one in our benchmarks, it's obvious that the Kyro II would outperform a GeForce 2 MX, especially at higher resolutions and in 32-bit color.
Speaking of 32-bit color, notice anything interesting? The 3D Prophet 4500/Kyro II see almost NO performance penalty when switching from 16-bit to 32-bit color, the only card on the market we can say that about. Because of the internal 32-bit rendering, games can be played in 32-bit color without loss of performance. In 32-bit, and at higher resolutions, the Kyro II catches up with both GeForce cards nicely, as they begin to become limited by memory bandwidth.
