The VIA Apollo Pro266 Chipset

By: Dan Mepham

The Apollo Pro266 chipset is similar to the Pro133A in many ways, but also incorporates some key differences. The Pro266 is composed of the VT8633 Northbridge, and VT8233 Southbridge. The chipset is also built around VIAís answer to Intelís Accelerated Hub Architecture, namely V-Link. V-Link is essentially a high-speed bus between the North and Southbridge that offers 266 MB/s worth of bandwidth, roughly twice that of the PCI bus, which is used in older North/South architecture.

The VT8633 Northbridge supports one or two P6 processors using Intelís Gunning Transceiver Logic bus, GTL+, as well as AGP 4X graphics cards, and up to 4 GB of PC2100/PC1600 DDR SDRAM. The VT8233 Southbridge supports all the latest standards, including ATA100, 6 USB ports, and an integrated 10/100 Mbit Ethernet controller.
