  Adaptec 29160 SCSI Card
  Jul 20, 2001, 10:00am EDT

Introduction

By: Sander Sassen

Adaptec has been a well known provider of SCSI I/O and RAID adapters for quite some time now; it probably has the best name in the computer industry as a provider high-quality, high-performance SCSI interface products.

A good example is its famous AHA-2940 line of SCSI controllers, which started off with the Ultra SCSI AHA-2940 and ended with the Ultra2 Wide SCSI AHA-2940U2W, now obsoleted by its line of Ultra160 SCSI controllers. Aggressively priced below its earlier AHA-2940XX line, the new line of Ultra160 SCSI controllers brings Ultra160 SCSI to the desktop and server environment in a number of different models.

With the introduction of their new line of Ultra160 SCSI products, Adaptec meets the I/O requirements of systems ranging from enterprise servers to professional Windows desktops. The Adaptec SCSI Card 39160 provides dual-channel Ultra160 SCSI performance and scalability for enterprise server configurations with internal and external harddisks. This card offers maximum throughput via a 64-bit PCI interface which handles up to 30 devices. New Ultra160 and legacy devices can run concurrently while maintaining maximum throughput.

The Adaptec SCSI Card 29160, targeted at the mainstream server market, provides the highest performance on a single channel 64-bit PCI card with both internal and external connections for Ultra160 hard disks. The 29160 also provides an internal connection to all legacy devices through legacy wide and narrow connectors.

The Adaptec SCSI card 29160N is targeted for use with workstations and entry-level servers. It features a 32-bit PCI interface, and provides an internal connection to Ultra160 harddisks, and internal and external connections to narrow SCSI devices including tape backup, CD-RW drives, scanners and removable drives. This card is ideal for environments where the fastest SCSI drives are inside the box and external narrow devices are required.

The Adaptec SCSI card 19160 is targeted at high-performance desktops and provides connectivity to both internal Ultra160 SCSI harddisk and internal and external narrow SCSI devices. The SCSI Card 19160 supports Windows 95, Windows 98 and NT 4.0. The 39160, 29160 and 29160N support all major operating systems, including Linux.

In this review we'll be taking a look at the Adaptec SCSI Card 29160, as that seemed to fit our test environment best and is the first model in the new line of Ultra160 SCSI adapters with a 64-bit PCI interface.
