VIA Launches KN266 Mobile Chipset for AMD CPUs
  Dec 12, 2001, 08:30am EST

The KN266 smashes the performance ceiling imposed by PC133 SDRAM and takes mobile systems to speed levels equivalent to the fastest desktop systems, offering a performance boost of up to 30% in productivity applications over the previous generation VIA ProSavage KN133. In addition, employing low voltage DDR266 SDRAM with AMD PowerNow!(tm) Technology lowers system power consumption augmenting the performance increase with extended battery life and usability.

The VIA ProSavageDDR KN266 also has S3 Graphics ProSavage8(tm) technology with AGP 8X equivalent bandwidth integrated into the chipset North Bridge. This delivers stunning video quality for key applications like DVD playback while eliminating the need for a discrete graphics card, thus saving real estate on the mainboard and lowering the transistor count ensuring even lower power consumption in thin and light notebook designs. ProSavage8(tm) is an enhanced version of the proven ProSavage4(tm) core seen in the successful VIA ProSavage KN133 and shares the same comprehensive driver set, enabling risk free market deployment for OEMs and mobile system developers.

"The VIA ProSavageDDR KN266 in tandem with the AMD Athlon(tm) 4 processor represents a new milestone in mobile system performance" commented Ted Lee, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, VIA Technologies, Inc. "DDR266 memory and ProSavage8(tm) integrated graphics make professional desktop calibre performance a reality in the latest compact, svelte notebook designs, while extending battery life and portability for even better user experiences" "VIA's ProSavageDDR KN266 chipset takes notebooks to a whole new level of mobile performance," said Rich Heye, Vice President of Platform Engineering & infrastructure for AMD's Computation Products Group. "DDR memory technology has been an integral part of award-winning AMD processor based desktop systems. Bringing powerful DDR memory technology into the mobile space will help boost the performance of mobile AMD Athlon(tm) 4 and mobile AMD Duron(tm) processor based notebooks." "VIA's expertise in integrated chipset design and leadership in bringing fast DDR memory support to new market segments is clearly demonstrated by the KN266," commented Dr. Jon Peddie, President of Jon Peddie Research. "Our investigations indicate the IGC segment of the mobile graphics market is exploding, which is a double bonus given that the mobile market itself is the only bright spot in the PC industry right now. We expect there to be over 27 million mobile computers shipped in 2003 and over 32 percent of them will be powered by IGCs."

The VIA ProSavageDDR KN266 is the first mobile chipset to support DDR SDRAM, built-in high performance S3 Graphics ProSavage8(tm) 2D/3D engine with equivalent AGP 8X bandwidth, and a fast 200MHz system bus make the VIA ProSavageDDR KN266 the fastest chipset for the AMD Athlon(tm) 4 and AMD Duron(tm) mobile processors. Building on the success of the VIA ProSavage KN133, the VIA ProSavageDDR KN266 has a full set of networking and communication features with the exact specification depending on your choice of VIA V-MAP 8233 Series South Bridge. As standard these include Integrated 2 Channel AC'97 Audio, Integrated MC'97 Modem, Support for ATA 33/66/100 and four or more USB ports. Options include an integrated 3ComŽ networking MAC. The VIA ProSavageDDR KN266 also possesses important mobile attributes such as integrated dual channel LVDS and full AMD PowerNow!(tm) 2.0 support.
