Enabling DV-in on Sony Digital Camcorders

Changing Register Values

By: Sander Sassen

Now that we've made the backup of the firmware we can start modifying the registers with DVin Lite in order to enable DV-in. Once again you’ll need to connect the interface cable and put the camcorder in ‘Player’mode. But before you look at the table below and start entering values, a word of caution; the camcorder performs a firmware checksum during boot up and we need to make sure that the checksum is valid with the modified registers. This checksum is stored in the pages F at address FF and FE. The value of these registers is as follows:

F, FF * Is the value of page 2, address F0 after modification
F, FE * Is the value of page 2, address F1 after modification

The table below lists all the modifications you'll need to make to the camcorder's registers in order to enable DV-in. Please take your time to read the comments so you'll know what to do. Also write down any values, such as 2, F0 and 2, F1 you'll need for further reference.

Reading the old and entering the new register values is simple, in DVin Lite start by changing the page number and then the register value and press STORE when needed. As long as you work down the table from top to bottom and don’t change anything that doesn’t need to be changed you’ll end up with DV-in enabled camcorder.

Once you've completed the last store your camera should be able to record from external inputs. Please take notice that the values given here are only applicable to the Sony DCR-PC4/5 MiniDV camcorder, they don't work on other models.
