Benchmarks, configurations

As mentioned it is interesting to not only look at the performance of the SMP systems from AMD and Intel, but to also compare these results to single CPU systems of identical configuration. This way around we can easily see what kind of performance gain (or loss) we can expect from the dual CPU systems. Naturally we’ve done everything possible to make this a fair comparison and are using the exact same parts in every configuration; furthermore all the systems we’ve tested were subjected to the same strenuous test procedure. Here’s the configurations used during our testing:

Asus A7V266-E, KT266A chipset, motherboard
2 x 256MB Samsung PC2100 Cas-2.5 DDR
AMD Athlon XP 1800+ CPU
Asus V8460 Ultra GeForce4 Ti4600
IBM 60GB 60GXP HD
Aopen 48x CDROM
Windows XP Pro

AMD Dual CPU
Asus A7M266-D, 760MPX chipset, motherboard
2 x 256MB Samsung PC2100 Cas-2.5 DDR
2 x AMD Athlon MP 1800+ CPU
Asus V8460 Ultra GeForce4 Ti4600
IBM 60GB 60GXP HD
Aopen 48x CDROM
Windows XP Pro

Intel Single CPU
Asus P4T-E, i850 chipset, motherboard
2 x 256MB Samsung PC800 RDRAM
Intel Pentium 4 1.8GHz
Asus V8460 Ultra GeForce4 Ti4600

All configurations were subjected to an 8-hour torture test where they’d be running a variety of benchmark applications. These benchmarks included; SYSmark 2002 and 3D Mark 2001 Second Edition. The results of these benchmarks are those summarized on the next page.
