Ann Arbor, MI, September 30, 2003 – FSC America, the exclusive North American distributor of Fujitsu-Siemens motherboards and keyboards, introduces the "Limited Green Edition" line of environmentally sound computer motherboards. The motherboards eliminate over 75% of lead and 99.85% of halogens.
"The Limited Green Edition line of motherboards was created to give the environmentally conscious consumer a choice and to show that environmentally sound manufacturing is feasible for electronics components," said Thomas Schramm, President of FSC America. "A regular computer motherboard contains halogens, lead and small amounts of other toxic and carcinogenic substances that end up in the environment and food chain. To significantly reduce or practically eliminate these substances during manufacturing, use and disposal without a significant increase in cost is a huge step in electronics manufacturing."
Lead reduction is accomplished by eliminating lead from the solder and the use of lead-free components wherever possible. Additionally, Fujitsu-Siemens solders in a pure nitrogen environment, eliminating the use of aggressive and toxic solder pastes and washing solutions. There is no toxic residue on the motherboard after soldering. No hazardous waste to take care of. Nitrogen soldering also increases the quality of the solder spots, which increase the lifetime of the motherboard. Non-toxic substances replace the halogens chloride and bromine, which are normally used as flame retardants.
The production of the Limited Green Edition motherboards is integrated into the ISO 9000 and ISO 14001 certified quality and ecology management system of the Fujitsu-Siemens plant. The motherboards comply with global and American UL standards for halogen-free base material.
