Benchmarks, 3DMark2003

By: Sander Sassen

As mentioned, we werenít that impressed with the performance of the Radeon 9600 XT, but you donít have to take our word for it, weíve got the benchmarks to prove it. And donít worry, we wonít bore you with tons of graphs or tables, we'll just run a few benchmarks that give a good indication of DirectX 9.0 performance as well as real world game performance. What weíve set out to do is to compare the Radeon 9600 XT to ATiís Radeon 9800 XT, 9800 Pro, Radeon 9700 Pro and the ATi Radeon 9600 Pro as that would make for an interesting comparison. Obviously the latest Catalyst 3.8 drivers were used throughout all of our tests. Weíll start off with 3DMark2003, to get a feel of the DirectX 9.0 performance the Radeon 9600 XT is able to deliver.

The Radeon 9600 XT manages to score a measly 3776 3DMarks, which isnít that much different from even the 9600 Pro, as it scores 3652 3DMarks, thatís only a 3.3% improvement. However the Radeon 9800 Pro and the 9800 XT both clock in 3DMark2003 scores well over 5500 3DMarks with the Radeon 9800 XT leading the pack at 6250 3DMarks. Although the oldest card in the roundup, the Radeon 9700 Pro still manages to score well over 5000 3DMarks. So on all counts the Radeon 9600 XT holds itís own against the 9600 Pro, but no more than that. It doesnít deliver the performance ATi has suggested for the Radeon 9600 XT, which would be around that of the Radeon 9700 Pro. In reality the Radeon 9700 Pro is 34% faster, which is quite a bit faster.
