And naturally our benchmark suite wouldn’t be complete without 3DMark2001se, which has been the defacto 3D graphics benchmark for quite some time now. Granted, it is only helpful to get an impression of the 3D performance of a graphics card, as with any of the benchmarks we’ve used in the previous pages, actual game performance cannot be simply gauged by looking at a single benchmark. What is helpful though is to use it as a metering tool, simply run the same benchmark on a host of different videocards so we can see where in the score list the Radeon 9600 XT ends up. Well, as is evident from the below graph, it ends up down at the bottom, just above the Radeon 9600 Pro.
Again, even with an older DirectX 8.1 benchmark such as 3DMark2001se, the Radeon 9600 XT fails to impress. It trails behind the Radeon 9700 Pro considerably and cannot even come anywhere near the Radeon 9800 Pro and 9800 XT. So again we see the Radeon 9600 XT just barely keeping ahead of the older 9600 Pro. I’m sure you’ve also noticed that despite the fact these benchmarks by themselves are no real indication of real life performance, after running three of them a trend seems to develop. We’ll continue with more benchmarks to see whether we can get a different perspective on the Radeon 9600 XT, but by the looks of it we’re not going to be surprised.
