Conclusion

By: Sander Sassen

If you’re looking to build your own high-performance class-D amplifier and have basic knowledge of electronics then Hypex’s UcD amplifier modules certainly offer an excellent price-performance ratio. They’re able to outclass many of the so called ‘high-end’ readymade amplifiers currently for sale at several times the price; Hypex has cleverly managed to open up a new market for themselves. The ability for the end user to either buy just the amplifier modules and construct a power supply of their own, or pick one of the Hypex power supplies makes for a flexible solution that will appeal to the seasoned do-it-yourselfer as well as the novice builder that sets out to construct his first amplifier.

Backed by a limited 1-year warranty the amplifier and power-supply modules Hypex sells are warranted against defects but obviously not against user-error. All of these can be ordered online at Hypex’s webshop if no local dealer is available and as Hypex ships worldwide it usually only takes a couple of days for your order to arrive. As for service and support Hypex has a number of documents available at their website that detail exactly how to use their amplifier modules in different configurations, for example with a balanced input. And obviously they’re also reachable by email to answer any queries or questions regarding their products.

We’ve constructed and have been using a dual-mono configuration of the Hypex UcD 400 AD amplifier modules and can honestly say that construction is straightforward; simply follow the instructions to the letter and you’ll end up with a working amplifier. We can also comment that Hypex’s claims of the unique features of the UcD concept aren’t just marketing babble or a sales pitch; these amplifiers really deliver. Hypex, unlike many other manufacturers, is letting the product sell itself rather than trying to hype it, despite their company name. So far this seems to be the most effective strategy as these amplifiers convince by their excellent sound quality, ability to drive difficult loudspeakers and offer a true and lifelike reproduction of the signal offered at the input, without adding something to or subtracting from it. So in summary we can conclude that these amplifier modules offer an excellent price versus performance ratio and come highly recommended.
