I'm going nutso trying to figure out a boot problem on my notebook (new disk drive, old one croaked), and got this error for awhile after booting from CD. Same to the byte as described above -- eiree! Boot from USB floppy also suddenly started failing, different symptom (didn't capture it and I'm not going back <8O )

I figured out that my PDA was still plugged into its docking station, which was still plugged into the notebook. The error cleared as soon as I undocked the PDA. I read somewhere else that having a USB key storage device plugged in can cause bizzare boot behaviors as well.

Moral of the story -- unplug anything you don't actually need for this part of the operation, especially USB stuff...

Now, I'm past this little gem, so I'm back to trying to figure out WTF is wrong with my boot files...

Hi - I just had the same error message.
The whole thing occured when an HD broke down and I had to reinstall on a new one.

Now, my problem was that I jumped my cd-drive on the same controller as master and my hard drive as cable select - On the master plug on the IDE cable.

So I just re-checked the jumpers on my HD, and problem solved :)

Much Love

Ok heres the thing. I have the same problem with this trap 0000000D general protection fault. The thing is that t is easy to fix it. Just insert the windows xp cd and repair your windows installed on your hard drive. it is a simple fault caused by a virus, or a software, or a hardware installation or some application that has crushed parts of the system registry. But i have a different problem. When i try to repair the partition with installed windows on it, it starts and than my pc shuts down. I do not know if its the processor overheating, or the metherboard is gone to hell, or maybe my ram memory is damaged. I would appreciate an answer. Grats....

CAUSE
This issue may be caused by a damaged NTLDR file.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, replace the NTLDR file by using the Windows Recovery Console: 1. Restart your computer by using either the Windows 2000 CD-ROM or Windows Setup floppy disks.
2. At the Welcome to Setup screen, press R to repair the Windows 2000 installation.
3. Press C to repair the Windows 2000 installation by using the Recovery Console.
4. Type the number of the Windows installation that you want to repair, and then press ENTER.

10. Type exit, and then press ENTER to restart your computer.

I had this problem on an HP NC8000 notebook where I replaced the system board. I ran the FIXBOOT function from the Windows recovery console and issue resolved.

1 Boot from the Windows CD, press a key to boot from the CD went prompted.
Note: you may need to enter setup and change the BOOT order if the system does go to the CD drive.
2 Let the Windows files load.
3 Press 'R' to enter recovery console.
4 Enter '1 or the number for the correct Windows installation to repair.
5 You might be prompted for an administrator password. This would be the Windows administrator password. Enter it.
6 At "C:\Windows" prompt enter "fixboot c:" and hit the "Enter Key". You will receive a message asking if you want to rewrite the boot sector. Type 'Y' and hit enter.
7 When the system has rewritten the new bootsector it will return to the "C:/Windows" prompt, type "exit", remove your Windows CD from the CD drive and hit the "Enter" key and your system should now boot to Windows.

If this doesn't work I would run a hard drive test program to verify the HD is not defective.

I hope this helps.

Your install CD is dirty or scratched. I had the exact error and this is the solution. Find another CD or repair the one you currently have.

I've been losing ntoskrnl.exe on my xp system regularly for a while now. I always just booted off the xp cd and got repaired from there. Yesterday, I lost ntfs.sys. I tried booting from cd, and it said it couldn't find 7mb worth of external space to load setup. That was bs, so I unplugged it and left it alone for a while. Today, I tried to boot from cd, and it gave me the GPF. When I tried again, it said it couldn't find the cd-rom, and proceeded to boot normally.
This inconsistency scratches my idea that it may be my old hard drive losing files--I've never lost anything but the two mentioned above, and it didn't really even lose the second one, but the system thought it did. I'm thinking now that it may be a problem with my bios, or maybe the reader heads on my hd. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Joel

The error message appeared after the 'Press any key to boot from CD...'
I've updated the BIOS to 1.6 already.

So basically i do not have any chance to choose any other options of repair.

Toshiba TE2100

Please help.

Hi Guyz.. I have the same problem.. the exact same error message.. Im on this more than 4 hours and I think it might be my CD ROM.

My laptop is an Acer btw. I inserted the System CD in changed the boot from etc. The only options I have displayed after booting are Hard Disk Fully Recovered and Exit. I Enter on the first one. MSG comes up

Once you have confirmed your selection that operating system will be installed. Note all data in the firt partition will be destroyed. Enter. Please insert Recovery CD. Done. Enter.

Then it starts automatically and it says Restoring partition...

I can see the source and the target partition. BTW i never seen this screen before when i reinstalled my laptop. During the restoration my CD ROM just stops on various placed and the laptop shuts down.

At one time it came to 50 percent and it asked me to put in the second CD. The CD started and after few seconds the CD ROM stopped.

Its like the CD Rom stops and the laptop shuts down. I have no other option to choose from the boot CD.. Im stuck I cant figure this out and Im going crazy..

Do u think that the faulty CD ROM might have something to do with it?

Please help.. thanks

Hi all!

I had this problem for over a week now, and I just solved it. I just replace my cd-dvd reader by an another one, and anything worked perfectly after. I guess it was broken, or very dirty...
The problem for me was intermittent. I had sometimes this trap error, sometimes it just hanged on load from cd..., sometimes it started windows install cd, but warn that a file was missing...

Hope this help someone...

Check the bottom of the disc if you're installing...often times a dirty or scratched install disc will generate this fault...or use another Rom drive and try it...good luck...
