Hey everybody - the subject line here pretty much explains my problem, but a little more detail... it starts working fine, but then after it performs an operation (like copying - which is a helpful feature in a HDD) it just stops being recognized and I get the "The source disk cannot be found- blah, blah, blah" and it stops responding. I can get it to function again, but I have to take out the power (PS/2 plug version, not AC power) and the USB connector and plug them back in again (don't have to reboot to do this) and it will recognize. Here's the basic specs:

300w Hitachi PSU
new Abit NF7-S mobo (Nforce 2 chipset)
Windows XP Pro

Any ideas what this might be? I just installed the latest USB drivers from Abit, and still no change. I can't find a similar problem like this on their forums, either. Any help would be great! Thanks.

Forgot to mention - it's an 80Gb Western Digital drive, but I forget what make/model the enclosure is (I'm not by it right now).

I'm having the same problem with an IOGEAR 120 GB. It doesn't happen all the time but usually after I transfer a large file or am in the middle of playing a divx movie off the drive. All I have to do is unplug the usb and plug it back in. I was thinking it was a faulty usb cord, but it could be an xp pro issue. Wish there was an easy answer.

I have the same problem with my laptop, a USB 2 PC Card, into a ME-320 Series ext. drive Except I have to uninstall (add/remove programs) an Ali USB driver - ( I uninstal, get a success mess.- the drive is immediately recognized as auto play starts scanning the drive- but the program/driver remains listed in add/remove programs. I can keep uninstaling, but the driver remains.
What i think is happening is i have a conflict where somehow a second driver eventuallyloads and i get a yellow triangle in the system tray-

If i find a solution i'll let you know.

I got the same problem with an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe which uses the same nForce2 chipset. I think it's a problem with the XP driver because the enclosure works fine on Linux and Windows 98. It also works fine if working over USB 1.1.

I installed a firewire card and now my IOGEAR 120 works fine with the firewire port. If at all possible, I'd say to stay clear of using usb.

I don't think this is just a USB 2.0 issue. I'm having the same problem with a firewire drive (more to come in a soon to be thread).

Seeing this I'm tempted to say it's a Maxtor problem or an XP problem. But it could just be an external media over a bus problem I suppose.

Just one more data point,
Ewan

I have the same problem. I am using Shuttle XPC SN41G2, which uses a NForce2 Motherboardas well. My understanding of the problem so far points to the problem with NForce2 Motherboard. I was told that by using a third party PCI USB/Firewire card, the problem should be fixed.

I would be keen to see if the problem still exist with bus powered firewire external HDD on Nforce2 Motherboard.

Hi. I'm Italian. Sorry for my english.
I have the same problem with a Vipower external enclosure ( my configuration : ASUS A7N8X nForce2, WInXP Pro SP1).
In this italian forum (http://forum.hwupgrade.it/showthread.php?threadid=494777) we have talked about this problem and we recognized it as a conflict between nForce2 USB 2.0 controller and chip GL811(probably included in all ours enclosure type). Other sites have reached the same conclusion:
http://www.viperlair.com/reviews/case_cool/enermax/misc/ener_enc/p2.shtml
http://www.ldlc.fr/critiques/PB00017950_1.html
http://linux.derkeiler.com/Newsgroups/comp.os.linux.hardware/2003-07/

What do you think about it?

nVidia doasn't seems to be interested to resolve this problem. Only Leadtek give a bios revision that seems to do it : http://www.station-drivers.com/page/leadtek.htm

In Italy we think that we must force nVidia to do something. We wrote to IT & Hardware magazines to make known this problem.
We hope that other people in other countries will do the same!

Thank you all!

Hello,
I've the same problem with my PC with an A7N8X and Win2k. I'm sure that the board is the problem because with my notebook the same external usb hdd works fine.
regards
Roger

i am also having the same problem, i have a 4.3gb laptop harddrive in a usb 2 case, its not just a usb 2 problem though, my digital camera is usb 1.1 i think. i connect it, when taking files off its USUALLY ok, but when putting files on it pretty much ALWAYS disappears from the tray icon and says that the device is not accessible.

im also using Windows XP SP1.

its screwed my harddrive now, i have to keep formatting it cos when i download now files to it, they become corrupt.

im using Nforce 2 ABIT NF7-S 2.0 Motherboard with usb 2, firewire, and all other new technologies.

I've got the exact same problem with a lanparty nfII (nforce 2 ultra). Basically I'm currently archiving all my music (in to Flac) on two external 160GB disks and to make sure that my music won't change over time I'm creating md5 checksums. WHen connecting the disks to the internal USB ports, the checksums won't add up. Sometimes they do but most of the time at least half of the checksums are wrong. I borrowed a PCI dlink USB card from work and plugged in the very same drive (on the same machine) and that's working fine.

Oh.. I also have a 40GB drive and that works fine on the internal USB so this seems to be somewhat related to disk size as well.

>> Same Issue as Above
I have a K7N8X board, which by the way is an NForce2 board. In this case though it is a Sony Cyber Shot camera and I am trying to use the USB to pull pictures off of it, essentially use it as a remote storage device, no difference really. And I went looking through my system events and saw that RSM failed, windows claims this could have been a corrupt RSM database problem, but I went through this fix and nothing happened.

Here is the kicker, and your going to love this, I have 6 of these machines, all identical, same case, power supply, motherboard, video card, even model of hard drive, and I did one build and then hard drive imaged the next 5 drives. And the camera will work with 2 out of 6 of them. I try every USB port on the board, front, and all 4 back ports, and same results. Could this be an NVIDIA, XP, SP1, very touchy problem, with removable media storage?

have the same problem with my Gigabyte GA-7N PRO motherboard. I am currently exchanging e-mails with Gigabyte who are currently trying to convince me I have an underpowerd PSU. (I dont think so!!)

I have found a work around by using a PCI USB 2.0 card with a NEC chipset. (I have read some other chipsets might not work)

Same here.

An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\D during a paging operation.

This is after what seems like a internal power failure. "Click occurs".

I think that a USB Reset is being sent to the Mass storage device in response to the Paging operation.

It only seems to happen to the first USB Mass storage device recognized. i.e. I have plugged drives in different orders and the problem happens to the first one only.

Microsoft doesn't really have a direct explaination. But it says to try disabling Enable Write Caching in the Devices Policy

I am yet to see whether this works.

The more I see this happen the more I am convinced that the USB device times out on a write and the layers above it time out on its timeout, causing a USB reset and cascading reset timing problem.

i.e. the USB device handler is not 100% compatible with Disk mechanisms in the higher layers.

I looked at the chips on the external device. And I found I had a Hong Kong made

CY7c68300-56PVC Controller chip.

This is imported by http://www.cypress.com

I downloaded their driver for it.

I will see if this solves the problem. The chip has 2Mbyte buffer.

Initial results are that the driver makes the disk run much faster than the microsoft USB Mass Storage Device.

I have the same problem with a WD 80 GB USB hard disk. It worked fine with 2 Win XP computers at home and Win2K computer at work and many others. Now I have problem with 1 Win XP computer at home. Win XP detects the drive, I can show a directory but I get errors when trying to access/copy files or run programs. When I try to stop the device Win XP says device is still busy. If I then try to unplug and plug USB back in the device isn't detected correctly and things get worse. Immediately after I plug it in I can sometimes copy files. I've swapped USB cables and plugged it directly into motherboard port with no luck. Only thing I have done recently is install DVD/RW drive and associated software for DVD burning. All other USB devices work fine (scanner, camera, flash memory readers, mice, etc.) I reinstalled VIA 4in1 drivers with no improvement. I look forward to hearing about anyone else's success dealing with this issue.

Gigabyte GA-7VXAP (VT400 chipset)
512 Mb DDR 333 ram
Athlon 2400+
80 Gb Diamond Max
ATI 8500DV AIW
TDK DVD/RW
TDK CD/RW
Windows XP Pro SP1
