Yep the drivers fixed the problem. It appears not all USB Mass Storage Device chips are created equal.

The problem is not fixed..... keeps on happening regardless. Its like a total internal power outtage on the drives now and then.

I have the same problem with my epox(nf2) mobo, but the external case i bought has a ALI chipset, but the problem is the same it works for 5 mins and stops. I dono if its the Nforce2 or the ALI chipset but if the same problem happens to a mobo with a VIA chipset then i guess it could be the external enclosures chipset.

I GOT IT TO WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, I got a VIA chipset usb2 pci card here http://store.4linkcomm.com/viausb20pcic.html and the external enclosure(ALI chipset) http://www.dealsonic.com/bymeidetousb.html . As I said before the NF2 mobo would hang after 5 mins of data transfer, hope this helps the rest of you with the same problems. I can't say the same thing for other external enclosure chipsets that were mention by other posters, guess you have to give it a shot

I have the same problem, about six years later, still...

Config is a Gigabyte P35 DS4, running Windows 7 (Vista before that) and an external USB case with a jmicron chipset/Seagate 750 GB Barracuda7200.10 drive.

Anyone got an idea by now except buying an extra USB card in addition to the eight ports I already have? :D
