Hey all,

My 30-Day trial period for Cloudmark SpamNet has just finished, and i am reluctant to wire US$3.99 to someone i've never heard of. Thus i come to you to impart your great wisdom upon me in the matter of totally free (i.e not just a trial) Anti-Spam software, which can handle up to eight E-Mail accounts in Microsoft Outlook. Of course, if you want to just give a user name and password for Spamnet to all on this forum, you're welcome to!

Thanks very much

Well I've never used a program to block spam & really not sure why anyone would, it's like popup stoppers always felt they were a waste of time & resources & how can you be sure important email you want doesn't get blocked as spam?.

That being said, I'll explain how I deal with email spam, I have about a dozen email accounts & use each for different things. I'll use 2 for forums I'm involved in, 4 for sites that won't let you in or allow you to download something without providing a email address, 4 for personal & 2 spares.

What I do is keep a log of where & when I use each account, now if I start getting spam on any of them I'll just delete it & create a new email address, that's where the log comes in, now I know if I need to contact anyone with my new address.

Creating several Hotmail accounts works great for this also, just don't log back in & 30 days later that accounts gone, let the spammers spam it all they want. I only have 1 Hotmail account now but had about 8 going at one time.

The spammers worst nightmare is getting those little undeliverable email notifications, it can really slow up there systems & waste there time. Spammers will always get you eventually no matter what you do, just be willing to delete & create new accounts when needed.

Another thing about logging where you use your email address is you find out who sold it to spammers, I've blasted several sites for doing this.

*sighs*

Unfortunatley, i have two Emails, but everyone else in my family uses only one for EVERYTHING. And then they get loads of spam, download a trial version of a spam killer, and when it runs out, they ask me to go and get all the cracks and s**t so that i can unlock the full version. Then they moan at me when i say i can't find any cracks (not that i even look - it's illegal, remember?), and then say that i have to go onto the net and look for a 'totally free, decent spam blocking utility that won't interfere with outlook and that we'll never have to pay for.' and they moan because i can't find it, saying 'there's thousands of those utilities out there. go and try again.

So i've come to you to ask if there is such a thing as a totally free spam blocker which actually works. Sorry about that little monologue back there.

I think Roy G is correct, there really isn't any that are "free & actually work".

I take it that you have all your email address through your ISP.

The real problem is everyone uses there main address for everything which results in massive amounts of spam after a while. My suggestions is have a primary address you use for friends & such but get a second one like Hotmail for everything else.
If a website requires a email address use the Hotmail account, then when they sell your address & the spam begins to be to much let that account expire & create a new one.
Now you can keep your main accounts free from most spam & retain your fav email address.

Everyone would likely need to create a new main email address to start with but if all followed the same rules & used a Hotmail type account for websites & such spam would be the furthest thing from everyones mind.

I guess Microsoft wouldn't be to happy if everyone did this, but it sure would annoy the spammers.

Heh, that it would.

I'm surprised that they bother with hotmail addresses anyway - do they not know that they're disposable?

I think spammers rely on the fact that most people won't change thier email address, we create them with the intend of it being something special & are reluctant to part with it.

So instead of just creating a new email address we try to find ways of blocking spam (makes me wonder if the spammers also create the anti-spam programs?).

I'm under the impression that the Hotmail accounts are in for some big changes soon, but fear not you could always get a Opera mail account, Mozilla has similar I believe & there's hundreds of other free email account sources all over the Internet. I have my own mail server as well as several accounts with my ISP, my ISP wasn't to happy with me running a server but when I said "fine I'll cancel my account & get a new ISP" they sure changed thier tune real fast & haven't bothered me since about it.

I've been using cloudmark's spamnet for almost 10 months now, the little plugin is quite effective. So far it blocked 3,600 spam emails out of 5,700 emails it checked. This is an email account that i cannot simply stop using, although i have others. Unfortunately my previous company decided to post it once on their corp website, which resulted in the spam-suffering i'm facing till today.

At any rate, the application is working fine with outlook 2002, the nice thing about it is that it checks the email against an online database, that is updated by the company as well as the client itself. I think it also caches some of the database on pc the client is running on (not sure).

It does have some misses, like passing some spam messages as legit email, or vice versa (mostly newsletters), but accuracy is pretty much high. It also allows you to report emails at the click of a button, as well as immuning emails against auto-blocking.

I don't pay nothing , iwas a user since they were in beta, which was free, when they released the final paid service, i decided to update my client, so i'm still paying nothing .

I believe that they shouldn't be charging end users since we are contributing to their spam blacklist quite actively, charging should only apply to corporate customers.

I came across two other free plugins, but Spamnet seems to the best. Feel free to try them, here are the URLs :

http://www.mind.net/spamassassin/Outlook%20Spam%20Filter%20Setup.htm
http://www.infintron.com/outlookinstall.cfm

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Shadi

Well, thanks for your help - i'm trying the program available from the second link you gave me, shadi. I agree with you about how SpamNet shouldn't be charging the people who are actually helping them update and refine their service, but i would, wouldn't i?

If you're looking for a free Outlook plugin head to http://spambayes.sourceforge.net/ or http://www.upserve.com/spammunition/. If you don't mind a seperate application then I suggest Spamihilator at http://www.spamihilator.com/

Other notable anti-spam resources you should look at:

K9 at http://keir.net/k9.html
Ella free with advert http://www.openfieldsoftware.com/EllaFree.asp
POPFile at http://popfile.sourceforge.net/
