ecommerce dialer.exe. Spybot Search and Destroy lists it as one they remove. Also...... keep an eye on your phone bills for any expensive or unknown calls. One of the things it does is dials phone numbers using your modem that it makes money off of when they are dialed. Like 976 numbers. Stay away from porn sites in the future. Go to phone and modem options in the control panel. On the modems tab hit properties. In the modem properties window go to the modem tab again and turn the speaker volume on your modem all the way up so you can hear if someone starts using it to dial out with.

I tried everything that everybody wrote, but still do not know how to turn off system restore. I have xp. I have the dreaded global dialer trojan horse virus. It keeps popping up horrible porn sites (I have dsl) and trying to dial out, but I have the phone jack disconnected. It also tries to install haldex? something.exe and won't let me close the boxes or say no unless i control alt delete.Any suggestions? I am a novice.

ok, system restore is turned off, but am afraid to delete all old system restore files as I think the oldest one, when I installed xp on the pc, is the only one without the virus in it.I think I got this virus about a wk after reinstalling xp. AVG can't rid me of it it says. Does anyone know which exe files are the "culprit" so that I can follow another postings instructions on using task manager? Some likely suspects I see are:
msmsgs.exe , svchost.exe, lsass.exe, services.exe , csrss.exe , smss.exe.
Man I hope somebody has the answer to this 'un! Thanks-

If you think the oldest system restore file is "clean", then do the system restore with that. Once the system restore is finished make a new system restore point which should mirror the oldest one. Then go to disk cleanup in system tools, click on your drive, and let the flashlight finish. then on the Disk Cleanup window go to the More Options tab and hit the cleanup button on the system restore box, deleting all but the newest sys restore point.

Will an older date system restore delete more recently installed programs?

Ken. If that is the location it is giving you, then, if you have AVG installed right, open up your program files and go down the list one at a time right clicking on each file and hitting "scan with AVG." When you find the file it's in uninstall it and delete any registry entries the uninstall didn't remove, then your system restore files.

Ubik, it will. You will see a list of installed programs associated with the various restore points. You would want to make a list so you know what you will lose before hand. Also save any "save" folders in recently installed games if you are a gamer.

My father got this virus on his PC a few days ago. As the guy he turns to for all his computer irritations he came to me. I walked him through several different ways to get rid of this thing but it would not go away. After finding this forum the other day I tried all of the ideas that were here but came up empty.

So, after a reboot and shutting down the dialer program, I went to the ecommerce folder and opened it. Then, I renamed the file extension to .vxe. After that I ran spybot and removed everything that spybot found. After that I set spybot to start and run as soon as windows booted and scan.

On boot up Spybot found no traces of the virus and it did not re-appear.

I would suggest that it is likely that renaming the file extension before its removal was the key since every other thing that I tried met with failure. If anyone else finds this as the key, please let me know.

Something that I forgot about in my previous postings regarding this virus.

Besides renameing the file extension of the dialer.exe I also made certain to delete the cookies from the computer, as well. I doubt that this had anything to do with the virus' stubborness, but it is possible that it had something to do with it.

To re-summarize what I did to remove the Ecommerce Dialer.exe - I ended it as a process. Then, renamed the file extension to .vxe. After that, I ran spybot and removed all references to it on the computer. I emptied the recycle bin. Also, the restore function on the computer was disabled and deleted the System Volume Information Folder. Next, I set Spybot to start on boot up.

After the computer was rebooted, I had no trace of the dialer program.

Before I start guys - I ain't running down those of you that are running AVG as it's a perfectly good free program. But that's the problem - it's free and doesn't have much clout in the update or dialer deletion department.

I used to run it but quickly found that the free database was a good 3 days behind other more up-to-date databases. I now run Trend Micro Internet Security with integrated Spam Washer, Trojan checker and a firewall to boot! I also run and update Spybot Search & Destroy after every session on the net!

Always be sure to run a complete offline scan of your system if it's virus scanner is updated. I know we hate paying for things when there are tonnes out there for free but think why they are free?

As I say, i'm not looking down on AVG users but merely pointing out a fact that using a free utility such as this leaves you open wide when you start asking it to act like one you paid good money for?

A final thing - I found a great site to check out the ability of your firewall in a post in here a while ago - give it a go and cheers to the person who posted it - it's called Shields Up!:

Ecosse too bad you had problems with AVG. I've been getting updates about every other day. AVG has caught things trend micro and symantec missed. It's the only one I've liked as it doesn't seem to interfere with other functions. what is the good of an anti-virus program that you have to turn off (Norton is the worst for this) in order to download a file without the a-v app corrupting it. Trend micro has a free 30 day trial, but they only update you once in the 30 days. How stupid is that. Here is one to try off the Microsoft web site. It's a 12 month trial of a $50 A-V system called EZ Armor Security Suite by Computer Associates.

I must agree about Norton, Payton - I tried it and hated it - I coouldn't even play music files without it interfering, same with McAfee!

I've never tried the Trend Free Trial as I went from the AVG 6, which I did like but wanted a firewall included, to PC Cillin then upgraded that to the paid version with free updates about daily for 1 year - not too bad for £15 I thought!

Stay safe and secure guys.

There has been a lot of talk about various AV proggies, here. Personally, I use a program called NOD32 and it can be found at nod32.com. They update more often than any AV that I have used before and it uses almost no resources.

One thing that I have found about most AV proggies is that the default settings do not include all files. You may want to check the preferences or options in your AV proggie to make certain that it scans all files. Especially when you consider that a lot of viruses seem to be using zip and other file extensions.

Just so that you all know my settings and the programs that I routinely run - AV - NOD32 Mal and Spyware - Adaware, Spybot and Spyblaster. Periodically, I will shut down my AV and go to trend Micro and use their online scan. Before I install a new Free program I try to remember to always creat a system restore point. My OS is Win XP Pro at home and Win2K pro at work. From time to time I check out F-Prots website so that I can keep up with the latest virus threats, as well.

Personally, since I have been using NOD32, I have never had a virus infect my computer - ever. And, since I have been running the spyware programs, I have never had any troubles with spyware, with the exception of a few cookies, here and there.

Also, NEVER run two AV programs at the same time. NEVER have two installed at the same time. They will interfere with each other and create havok. I put this in this post because I have cleaned out a lot of viruses from computers where people have been running more than one AV proggie.
