I have been fighting with this machine for hours now.

XP2500+ barton
Asus A7n8x (not deluxe)
512mb stick PNY DDR400 memory
Maxtor 40gb HD
Lite-On CDRW
ATI Radeon 9000 AGP

The hard drive is fresh. After several attempts, I took the hard drive
to another machine with XP Pro already installed and deleted the
partition and recreated it.
The machine will take a Windows ME install perfectly, but whenever I
attempt an XP install (booting directly from CD or from inside Windows
ME), it launches all necessary drivers and files, but never gets past
"Setup is starting Windows".

I have checked and double checked the processor and memory settings in
BIOS, all are correct and reading fine. I have also reset the CMOS to
factory and restarted several different times.

There are no other components installed on this machine besides those
listed above to conflict.

I have also tried enabling and disabling ACPI control. Neither made a
difference. As a side note, Windows 2000 pro will not install either,
same scenario. Bios is V2.0 Build 1005, so it is fairly new. All
components are fresh from Retail boxes.

I even tried the 10mb size constraint trick to force the MBR to reset.
Nothing.

Hey there, sounds more like a prob with the disk not the hardware, i have had this problem MANY MANY a time, try cleaning the CD, it sometimes helps, if not just keep trying OR if u can get ya hands on another copy of Win XP then try that, as i say i think its more the disk than your hardware, sometimes its taken me 6 attemps to load win XP using 2 disks ... GL with it all

Ohh, just another thought IF u have another ROM handy to throw in then you might like to try that as well as some rom drives are fussy on what sort of disks they will read properly ... :)

I have used 3 different CD Drives (guess I should have mentioned that), as well as two different CD's.

Still nothing. Machine will handle Windows ME perfectly.

LOL, I feel your frustration, i went throu 2 CD-ROM drives and 3 disks, b 4 i got mine to load, first it would hang where yours is and then when i finally got it started i found different corrupted files on each of the disks, needless to say CD's make good frizbees, and the monitor nearly followed .... it still may be the disk :( ...as if they are copied unless they have been copied correctly then they can be a royal pain in the *BEEP* ... i cant see any of your hardware being a problem, all i can suggest is loading from a 89 boot disk and fdisk and then do a format and try a fresh instal ... GL!!

Hey Matthew,

I had just experienced this problem a moment ago, before I fixed it.

Linux RedHat 9 would install w/ no problems, but WinXP, 2K, 2KAdv Server would hang at "Setup is starting windows". Now, I have tried everything!!!!! I thought I needed diff MOBO or CPU. I'm running AthXP 2000+ w/ ABIT KR7A133.... and a good MOBO!

Well, I was reading on microsoft.com on how the wrong HAL might be loading, so I went to BIOS and checked what was going on.

I was loading MPS1.4, instead of deactivating it alltogether. I think that's for MP (MultiProcessing). Win98 doesn't work w/ MP, Win ME doesn't either. That's how those start.

It works now. I am on a diff comp now, writing this... the XP2000+ is installing WinXP.

Hope this helps,

Mikalot.

I'm having the same problems. I've tried three different burns of XP & two different CDROMs, but the setup always stalls in the same place ("Setup is starting Windows"). I remember trying the suggestion that Microsoft suggested by running a specific HAL. I tried Standard PC & got the same result. Mikalot, which HAL did you specify? It seems that there are many choices for a single processor normal PC:

-ACPI Uniprocessor PC
-Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC (how is this different than the one above??)
-Standard PC
-Standard PC with C-Step i486
-Other

If I specify a non-ACPI HAL, do I need to disable that choice in the BIOS as well, before running setup?

I am at my wit's end here & could really use some help.

Thanks,
jawgee

I have an MSI K7N2 m/b. I ended up turning off the APIC function, (deactivating the MPS table from loading). After doing this, XP would stop freezing for me at the "setup is starting windows" point in XP setup. I ended up also having to bring my cpu clock back down to 166mhz from 200mhz in order to fully setup XP_Pro on my CPU. I was getting other Stop errors later in the process. This message thread put me on the right track in order to solve my problem.

Thanks,
JF

I am having the same exact problem..

Specs:
MSI K7N2-V
XP 2000+
Western Digital 30 GB HD
512MB Pc2700 Ram

Trying to install XP Pro and the PC hangs at the same spot "setup is starting windows"

I have changed every power/pci/pnp/acpi option in bios, and even tried various options like "standard pc" ACPI Uniprocesser PC" etc etc during the first part of windows setup.

I have enabled/disabled just about everything in the bios, Ive loaded failsafe defaults, and optimized defaults..Ive done everything I can think of.

If anyone has anymore suggestions, other than what has been listed in this thread, I sure would appreciate it.....

At this point I'm ready to send the motherboard back and try a diff model..

I have had this problem on Asus a7n8x for a while so I sent it back and got a DFI LanParty ultraB... guess what same problem!!!!
Used the disc on an MSI board and no problems at all.
I also have
1 x 512mb Crucial PC2700
Athlon XP 2600
Seagate SATA 120g
MSI FX5600 128mb etc etc....

I ahve also tried this with 4 different HD's, 3 different CD's, and now 2 motherboards! Im guessing must only happen on NForce2 Chipsets as both my new boards have this problem with the same chipset.

Im pulling my hair out!!! Dont want to take the DFI board back it seems great!

PLEASE HELP ME!
Tim

Hey, I found out, after trying every other piece of hardware, that it was the CPU.

I literally bought a new piece of hardware, and tried to install XP with each new item.

The very last thing I bought was a CPU, and it solved the problem. It turns out it was a problem with the level 2 cache, because improper cooling (debris in the thermal paste) caused the cpu to be damaged.

Replace your cpu and I bet it works.

This was just surprising to me, because I could get into bios, and even being to install xp. I have never known a cpu to act this way...in all the ones I have had crap out on me, the system just wounldnt boot.

Good luck, and replace the cpu and you will be all squared away im sure.

hook up 1 cd/drv. and 1 hdd. go to bios set default settings in bios then set boot sequence to floppy ---cd/drv.----hdd - then make sure the hdd is reconized in bios . Then do a format and clean install. Follow these directions in this link. good luck ,it is simple.

None of that will help him any if the cpu is bad. Trust me. I just went through this in its entirty....

and my best guess, if the problem happened on 2 motherboards, as it did for me, then its the cpu. I would almost stake my life on it.

I fixed this same setup problem by removing one of my dvd drives, formatting hard drive, and changing boot order as stated above. In the process I noticed that my dvd drive on channel 2 was set as a slave instead of master. So I changed the jumper and xp finished the setup.

I FOUND THE SOLUTION... ok i know (been having) this problem and i found "MY" solution... ok first if u are using a burnt version it works the same as a original one.. second.. if u boot from just restarting and trying to install it wont work.. thrid .. to make it work load up windows and insert the cd.. install "new install" after that it will load then restart the pc.. after that just wait for the cmos to load it up and it will install... i have done this many times becuzz i get weird homepages (i can never change my home page when i get hacked)
hope this helps... :)

ACPI setting in the BIOS solved my problem. Set it as disabled and after 2 days of doing every option available to me it worked. What a relieve.

Just had this scenario all night. Just upgraded ram before instalation. Guess what?? Bad Ram!
In my experience it's always P/S or Ram.
I had tried all sorts of ways like above. The error messages when trying to do it from dos via i386 gave it away. Bad new Ram. (brand name).

Man, i've had this problem soooo many times i think i'm gonna puke. Here is how I fixed it "THIS" time:
1. put in the cd and turn on computer
2. windows will load and say something about "press F6" to install raid controller drivers"
3. Start hitting F5 instead of F6!! ....
4. It gave me an option that said something like. .."standard PC i486"
5. POW, setup finished and finially went past that damn screen we all hate
