Hi I have an ECS K7VMA mobo
1.2 Athlon T-Bird OC'd to 1.4.
896MB SDRAM
Win XP Pro

Just bought a Chaintech Geforce 4 MX440, and installed it today. I didn't even have to enable the agp slot, it did it itself. Problem is, my system freezes after a few minutes of running any game. The GPU has a heatsink and fan provided by chaintech so I'm assuming it's cool enough. I'll play madden 2003 for a bout 2 min and it just hangs. Have to hard reboot. I tried lowering my fsb overclock and it still does the same thing. I have a 350W psu so I didn't think that was a problem. Could it be a driver problem? And if so which drivers should I install? If it's not a graphics driver problem has anyone had success updating Motherboard drivers? This is driving me crazy!

thanks for all the tips, guys....
im forwarding some of my own endeavours of these damn GeForce 4 problems, since i saw that people with ECS boards have problems too.

My specs:
- ECS K7S5A (SiS 735 chipset)
- Athlon XP 1500+
- SDRAM 512 MB
- Chaintech geforce 4 MX 440 SE 64mb (code: A-G445)
- Win XP Pro (SP1 installed)

The problem started when i upgraded from my old geforce 2 MX to the new geforce 4.
I tried running GTA3 but after a couple of minutes it just hang. no solution but the reset button. tried UT2003 too, same thing happens.

tried it some more times but same thing still. so i took the following actions:
- upgraded bios from ecs (still problem...)
- directx 8.1b (still problem...)
- nvidia drivers (tried 28.32, 29.42, 40.72, 41.09 -- still problem)
- installed new agp drivers from ECS and SiS web sites (still stuck...)
- installed AMD AGP miniport drivers (no luck...)
- tried several ideas from A LOT of forums (like tuning with rivatuner, changed agp aperture, tried all agp speeds 1x 2x 4x, didnt try changing fast writes and sideband addressing because they're not supported by the geforce,so says rivatuner and powerstrip -- and it still hangs)

- there is one thing, the chip has only a heatsink on it, not a fan, but still i dont think it could be overheating -- however i'm going to put a new heatsink and a good fan. i'll post if it fixes.

so it seems, it must be totally hardware problem.
i have written to ECS, ChainTech and AMD. If, hopefully, i get a response back, i'll let know.

If anyone has to suggest something please let me know, this problem is p**sing me off, and since i cant afford to change mobo or change card, i have to solve this one.

-- cheers

Finally got my card working. All i did was install the newest drives for xp on nvidia's site. 40.19's i think. installed, rebooted, works just fine. fan works great, not over heating, was just a drived problem. Didn't have to update mobo drivers either so I'm assuming is was just the drivers that came on the cd chaintech gave me. Try the newest xp-specific drivers, might help. Now I can run games without a hitch!

I have the same problem. My system reports that my GeForce4 MX card is running in PCI mode.

MoBo = XFX KT400-ALH (VIA chipset)
CPU = Athlon XP 2000+
OS = Windows XP Professional with SP1
Video Card = XFX GeForce4 MX SE 64 MB DDR

I tried both with DX8.1 and DX9 and problem persisted.

Any idea on how to make my card to run in AGP 4X mode instead of PCI?

Thanks,
Fernando

I have solved this issue with my GeForce 4 MMX440-SE. First, I updated the nVidia driver, that didn't work...so I flashed my BIOS, that didn't work. Finally, I updated the Via drivers on my motherboard and that worked. I am running a Soyo KT333CK Plus Dragon, AMD Athlon 1.7 XP, with 512 meg ram, operating system is XP. This appears to be an XP issue and Windows is requiring the latest and greatest drivers to run the card. I would try to update the chipset on the motherboard prior to attempting anything else, may save you time and effort. Good luck!

go to your motherboard manufacure's website and look in the downloads section for BIOS updates for your system. they usually come with a .exe and you must boot from a DOS floppy. also from http://www.nvidia.com there are new drivers 44.03.

Sincerely,
Brandon G.
