You need to install your motherboard chipset drivers (SiS?).

a) Uninstall your graphics card drivers.

b) Install the chip set drivers.

c) Install your graphics card drivers.

I have the same problem.
I tried this with installing chipset drivers, new (GF4 Ti4200) vga ones, Bios tweaks and even a format and re-install of Win98SE, but nothing seems to work.

Now I'm stuck with a crippled Athlon64 3200+ pc with a pathetic 3Dmark2001 score of 8201(after tweaks, before it was 73xx) ...

I am also having this particular problem. Games like Max Payne 2 states that a 50% increase in performance IF AGP Texture acceleration is turned on. Is there any solution? Is it true I must re-install chip set drivers and video drivers?

Lack of AGP texture acceleration is mostly down to inappropriate AGP drivers for the system. Make sure when you do a clean install of an OS, the first drivers you install are the chipset drivers.

Otherwise, do a clean uninstall of both graphics cards and chipset drivers (in that order)

And then reinstall them (possible with a different version) in the reverse order.

I did the following in, in this order :
- format C:
- install Win98SE
- install latest Via 4-in-1 chipset drivers
- install latest Detonator drivers
- install Direct-X 9.0b

And it still said unavailable.

I didn't reset my Bios defaults until after these steps though and I noticed that before I installed Direct-X 9, it had version 6.1 installed and then, agp acceleration WAS enabled (but DirectDraw and Direct3d were unavailable).
Maybe it's some setting in Direct-X 9.0b combined with an older OS?

I have on my system a couple of hardware devices that I don't understand and that the OS wants installed, maybe the reason could be here :
- PCI Raid Controller (twice)
- PCI OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller (audio Firewire?)

There are some others (including some unknown devices), but they get installed automatically without me having to specify a driver.

Does it do any harm if I systematically disable System Devices in Control Panel to see if they enable AGP acceleration?
I don't want to have to install Windows again.

I didn't realise you have Windows 98SE. I guess my eyes went temporarily blind or something :)

Ok well Win98SE doesn't do too well with the latest VIA 4in1's. I would suggest try older ones...best stable one for Win98 is v4.38, but only if that fails, try v4.43.

Thanks for answering, but I got it now.
And the culprit is : Direct-X 9.0b!

I installed and ran DirectX Buster (in safe mode), followed by an install of Direct-X 8.0 I still had on an old game-mag's cd.
Now it's enabled alright.

Ofcourse what will we do come Half-Life2 and Doom III, which will probably require DX9???
And will Microsoft rectify this?

Well Doom III is opengl based so you're probably OK by then ;)

And by the way HL2 is being delayed microsoft could come up with DX9.1 by then :)

I still say it's to do with Drivers....DirectX is not a driver and is not actually activated until you start some app that uses it. Unless the rumours of nvidia overwriting a portion of DX code are true :)

Then again the Ti4200 is not truely DX9 compatible so that might have something to do with it.

Maybe it's the Ti4200, or Win98 which M$ may be boycotting in this fashion. :)

I got it working now, but I get only 10 more 3DMark2001 points?!
It's at 8318 now when I should be getting 50% more (at LEAST 10,000 points) ...
It's as if my cpu is underclocked by 1Ghz; I get beaten by a P4 2.4 with a GeForce3 Ti500.
But that's something different I'll have to ask about somewhere else I guess.

I have the same problem over and over. I have a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB and dxdiag says that AGP Texture acceleration is not avaiable and neither is DirectDraw.I have windows XP Pro I just got this comp! Its like 1 week old and now this happened. Im tring to play Halo but it wont work becasue of the DirectDraw. I was working fine when I first got it but now nothing works. There no use calling Dell or microsoft.I called both. Ever time I talk to one. They tell me to call someone else. I stayed on the phone for 5 hours straight and nothing. Im really p**sed dells support. It is not A+ As the advertise. ITS TERRIBLE! Dont bother calling. They dont even know what Dxdiag is.

Guys I fixed mine a wierd way. I found it online. Open windows netmeeting and then find Remote Desktop Sharing. Turn remote desktop sharing On, then off again. Then see if your agp and Direct Draw work. It worked for me for some reason. No clue why, Dell doesnt know either. But just try :)
