As i mentioned about 30 posts ago, i have tried all of your solutions from IRQ problems to bios settings etc...etc....

My problem has been resolved for about 1 month now without any single problems. Very easy, if you have a mobo with duel channel memory change it to single channel and it (hopefully for you!!!) will solve all your problems.

P4 3.00gb
1024MB Kingston Ram (2x Single 512MB SINGLE CHANNEL!!!)
ASUS9800xt gfx card
Gigabyte sis655fxultra motherboard (AVERAGE!)
Zalman 400w PSU

Just curious... Is anyone having this problem without duel channel memory???

try this:
install directx 9.0 (not 9a nor 9b)
run standard catalysts 3.5
set fastwrites off on the smartgart

everything will work fine (it works on my 9600pro and on my friend's 9800xt)

if i install dx9a or 9b, i get usual crashes
if i use different catalysts i get crashes
if i set fastwrites on, i get crashes

it seems a lot of people is having problems with those cards, but no one is bothering doing what i say ... at least giving it a try... i tried everything to fix my problems, and this is the only way to fix them complitely (no crahes, every games works fine and fast)

i hope it helps

you have to use a tool to uninstall directx9 ... do a search with google about it

(here a link that could work : http://www.3dcht4u.de/3dc/kfd53t5fes8z/directx-dx9uninstaller.zip)

you can find directx 9.0 on various game cds or somewhere in the net

(i really suggest you doing a backup of all your data and then a clean install of xp, installing then catalysts 3.5 and directx 9.0)

i hope it helped

>> Re: Radeon 9800 XT crash problem
I wish I had read this before... I am building a home theater PC system for a relative, and he wanted "the best of the best" in it. My own HTPC has a 9700 Pro and it works great. I thought the 9800 would be the same.

This 9800 XT has been nothing but problems. It works fine when forced to 4X mode in Bios, but who wants a $400, 4X card??

There are so many solutions listed here, but it seems that no one works for more than 3 people!

I have read that upping AGP voltage by 0.1 V fixes the problem, but my Soyo Dragon Plus KT600 can't do that. I just bought a Abit NF7-S to replace it. (which is a royal P.I.T.A. because I used replaced the chipset fan with a Zalman passive heatsink, and now I have to remove all that before sending it back.)

My card would get VPU errors right away, as soon as you logged into windows and tried to do anything complex like dragging a window, or running the dxdiag utility.

Hopefully the new mainboard will calm some of these problems down. I don't want to change the vid card out because I spent an hour installing that Zalman fan kit.

People have said even 400W PSU's don't have enough current at the molex connectors to feed this card... what about putting two PSU legs in parallel? Would that work?

System:
KT600 Soyo Dragon Plus (onboard audio disabled)
AMD XP 3200+ 400MHz
Zalman 400W APF
ATI 9800XT with Zalman heatpipe cooler and fan
2x512 Giel DDR400
2x200GB SATA RAID
M-Audio Revo 7.1
MIT-120 HDTV recorder
H3D2 DCDi Video Scaler
H3D2 direct DVI out

I hope this works... I don't want to be full-time tech support for the person getting this machine!

Just a suggestion but if anyone has the time and the inclination, it may be helpful to summarise everyone suggestions for helping fix the XT probs in a single message and starting a new thread called "Radeon XT crash answers". There's now so much to read that it's almost going full cycle and people may be missing out the solutions to their problems? We could then link to it from this thread. Anyway, just a suggestion. And yes, I am a lazy git (and I'm at work). :p

i don't think the voltage bug is really a bug.. but a real problem that they are prolly not going tobe able to fix because of hardware mis building.

Do you think that a "Task Miditower low noise 300W" can deliever enough power to the rest of my system:

P4 2.8/533
2x 512 kingston 333
AsRock GE PRO HT
Seagate Barracuda 120GB
C-Media 5.1
Sapphire Atlantis R9800pro

And is this problem only caused with Windows XP and 2000

Hey,

Well, if you have the feature on your motherboard where you can put up the voltage of the AGP that it get's from the mainboard, you might not have to buy a new PSU... You can find this in the Bios. I have not tried it myself because I changed cooling and everything runs fine now, but do pay attention. Some people say you can brake your card by upping the voltage and I have not seen any post anywhere of someone who says he broke his card by upping the voltage, but if I were you I'd be carefull...It should be oke normally, otherwise there wouldn't be such an option of the AGP voltage I guess, but know that when you put up the voltage, your card will get hotter, so anyway, I advice you to see if you have enough cooling for your videocard.

frank b u had the P4S8X right, well ive deducted the problem with this motherboard with ATI boards, first of all u need to upgrade the BIOS to Release 1005 directly, if the problem still persists, go into the bios and change the chipsetmode to synchronous, then if still same turn off automatic restart, crash reporter and vpu recover.

>> Re: Radeon 9800 XT crash problem
Airman... i've solved yet all my problems with my Radeon 9800XT... and i've only disable my integrated sound card and get a new one. All now work fine.
Anyway... before this i've spent two week testing all my system and trying all the solutions reported here and everywhere, all the drivers, all cool solutions. The only thing that i've not tried was a new PSU because i think was not necessary.
I've also readed elsewhere that Radeon 9800 don't work on Asus P4S8X.
LOOL... mine now work perfectly (also with the new Catalyst drivers) only after disabled my on-board soundcard.

Anyway... i want to say also that my on-board sound card work very well before and after i've had this probs. And only on my system my 9800XT seem not work perfectly.

So, my advise to anyone have 9800XT probs is... first of all try to disable via bios one-by-one all your on-board peripherals like audio, network, etc... before think to change your video card.

Hi Guys,
I posted a "solution" a while back - I had reinstalled windows without the sound card and things looked rosy for a couple of days but I guess I wasn't testing it out as completely as I should have. Turns out it did sweet f*** all, apologies to ALL who followed my crack-ass advice.
Anyway just letting you all know that I did eventually solve the problem: by completely upgrading my motherboard. So I'm guessing that my Giga-byte S648FX board (mega crap) couldn't handle the card.
I've now got the Giga-byte GA-8I875 board, which is an Intel 875 chipset.
I've been hassle free since I got it installed. Hope this helps.

PC Spec.

Intel Pentium 4 3.06 Gz
1 GB RAM
Radeon 9800XT 256 Graphic Card
80GB 7200rpm Hard Drive

I was sent one of these cards by ATI via a contact at the company and its had the freeze problems in games from day one.

I have tried all the drivers from ATI over the last six months to no avail.

I have had NVidia cards up to this point without a problem.

I get the error message "smartsave has reset your card because it was unable to complete an instruction from your device driver" I then get an option to send an error report to ATI.

My card is reset and then I am told to reboot my system.

This happens on all games I play including graphic hungary games like Halo, Call of Duty, Far Cry etc but also less pretty games like Dark Age of Camelot.

My PC is less than 12 months old and I have the latest AGP drivers for my SIS motherboard enabled for 8XAGP which my previous card an GeForce 5200 Ultra used without a prob.

From the above message, it seems to be a driver issue which ATI have not resolved yet.....

Can anyone give me some solutions as replacing my PSU seems a bit drastic and pointless, as I am fairly sure its not a power problem....and cooling is not an issue either.

Otherwise I gotta say ATI suck and NVidia rule....even if its the reliability of their products and drivers

Hi guys,

A few weeks ago, I bought a Sapphire Radeon 9600XT. Same problem as you all: system hangs when playing 3D games. Tried everything (driver MB, drivers ATI, BIOS upgrade MB, VIA drivers, game-settings, DirectX 9.0). Looked in different Forums, including this.
At last, changed my ATI-Sapphire for a NVIDIA-MSI 5900XT. Guess what: same problems !!!! Couldn't blame ATI no more (sorry, guys ;-) ).
Went on searching and finally came out with this:
I have a Athlon 2400+ (running on 133Mhz)
Have 512 Mb DDR 2700 RAM-memory (running at 166 Mhz)
I lowered the clockspeed of the memory in BIOS, so it is now running at 133 Mhz too (same speed as the CPU)

I just played the demo of Farcry for half an hour without the desktop-crash and Battlefield Vietnam for about an hour (also without crashing) (BFV worked for 5 minutes before, if I was lucky).
Ran Aquamark: score 34119 (32632 for the change). Ran 3DMark03 (ran before with some problems) smoothly: 4603

I don't know yet for sure my problem is solved, but it seems like it.

It can be that I have some (cheap) bad memory, it can also be that the clockspeed of both CPU and memory should be the same: I don't know.

Give it a try (it will cost you 5 minutes) and let me know if your problems are solved

Good luck !
