I think it would be best if you try to borrow some different computer parts from your friends or someone else. Then you will know which part causing the problem and change it. I did this way. This will save you a lot of money and nerves. Good luck.

My computer is:-
Athlon 64 3000+
512mb kingsmax pc3200 400ddr
Gigabyte K8VT800 Pro
160gb WD Sata HD
No-Name case and PSU

I was using a GeCube Radeon 9600xt 256mb for about 1 yr and it works perfectly. Zero problems with all games including BF2

Yesterday I install an Asus Radeon 9800xt 256mb and my computer crashed whilst loading to BF2, it would crash at various stages of the game.

I WOULD ASSUME from this thread, which I read every single page of, that my PSU s**** and needs to be replaced with a more powerful PSU.

I will try this out and let people know!

Rex.... I'm getting a totally new computer - I have already bought the 7800gtx as a start - Due to my limited finances I think I will be getting an AMD 64 4000+ cpu, a SLI motherboard, and some low latency RAM - likely to be OCZ.

My other computer, I'll just leave it with the 9600xt.

HI ALL, i'm from Argentina and i had the same problem as all of you comment here,
my pc is configured with these components

Asus k8vse Deluxe
AMD 64 +3200
512mb kings
80hd sata
60hd ide
cdrw asus 5332as
and the recently problematic Gecube Radeon 9600 pro xt (256mb)

i recently had to reinstall windows and with the latest updates from WINDOWS UPDATE that i upgraded i've started to have crashes in my dear pc. i proved with diferents drivers versions (5.6, 5.7, 5.8 in enlglish and in spanish) and i think that i've resolved the problem... i belive that it has two problems... 1° the heat on the cpu colud be one of them i solved using a new power fan and the 2° you have to enable firewall exceptions to the program CLI.EXE
up to now (only one day) i haven't these crash problems and in the event log of windows in the ACCEventLog of the catalyst drivers i hadn't hav any more entry.

sorry about my poor english but i inserted this reply during work time...!!!

i hope that this will help all of you!!!

during the week i will posting again with any more news...... BYE

My system is stable with the card in. 2d seems to be good. When ever i load up lets say Star Wars galaxies it crashes to a blue screen with squigly white dots. I have noticed that Serial Bus Controller shares the same irq as the radeon. I have tried doing a manual irq config but I cant get it isolated. I think irq problem might be it. Sometimes it will just crash the game...blue screen/blue screen with white dots/ or the system just completly resets... help

Windows Xp Sp2
350 PSU
I have a radeon 9800 Pro 128mb
Pt-800a ECS MoBo with latest bios updated
Prescott 3.0GHz Intel
PQI 1gig ddr 400FSB
Sb Audigy 2

well first off get rid of that pidly 350watt psu that prolly has a 12-15a 12volt leg and get a read powersupply like a pc power and cooling that actuallly puts out real power.. not an antec or enermax or thermaltake a real true power power supply.. go to pcpowerandcooling.com or whatever is and buy one.. stop wasting your time with pidly toy powersupplys. Yes its gonna set you back a bit but its worth it. If 99 percent of the people in this forum would just have bought one when i told them and got the right ram and settings for it there comptuers would just all run fine. The answer has been posted a good 4-500 times.. people just don't care to read and take note of it cuz its easier to just ask again.. well theres your answe.. now do something about it.

I have an asus 9800xt ; it used to crash really bad on half-life 2. only thing I found that really worked and solved all my game crash problems was changing my AGP setting to x4 with the catalyst control panal. This may spook speed freaks but my games never crash and run better than they ever did. I tryed a lot of the fixes discribed above and none of them really ever worked. my crashes were so bad they shut my monitor down caused my apc backup to crash and the only way I could escape was to turn the power switch on my velocity mico computer off.

I agree with the post about setting to AGPx4 must be some stability problem with some motherboards on AGPx8 settings.

another thing i've done which has solved one game crash problem i was having with an asus 9800xt was to enter start-run-type dxdiag-sound tab- reduce sound acceleration slider to zero or 1 then run game with problem and see if this helps. this solved a sound looping crash problem i was having with halflife2.

men. to solve all the problems or most of all with your ati 9600 or 9800 do this.

install the graphics card drivers that cames with the package. then without unistalling these install the version 5-8 provided by atis site., and get a program like for smart doctor for asus cards to keep the core very coldy:)..
this will resolve your problems..

but before doing this you must uninstall all the software of ati previous installed.

this works

cya

God I hate spending money on junk, I've read all your posts and I have never had these problems with any cards-lifetime, than I have had with this 256Mb-256Bit 9800XT in one week. Now I have found this complaints site I'm gutted I didn't look at this before buying it.
Hindsight would of greatly benefitted me in this case!!!
I have bought the card second hand on ebay, so I can't change it or give it back, it cost me £100 to buy and all it does is crash, crash, freeze, crash and then die. My blood is starting to boil.
I had a Radeon 9800Pro thought I would get a large boost from this card, cheaper than upgrading to PCI-Express throughout my computer. The 256Mb-256Bit 9800XT card isn't much more powerful from my last 128Mb 9800Pro card although everyone said it was awsome compared to mine.
My video graphics on media player and 3D games are totally ruined by freezes and crashes back to desktop
I'm a com. technician and believed what the sites and people said about this card. You have to trust someone.
I have a much better system than any have mentioned in this forum and have installed/reinstalled, bios, apeture size, I've done the lot every way possible and still the cards a piece of crap.
Any help greatly appreciated, it cant be the PSU because I have a 550W one and it would also be able to run my car aswell as anything in my computer.

I now know, despair!!!

Sorry to here about your problems I've got a 9800xt and its very stable if you are having stability issues you should download the ATI catalyst control center 5.11 drivers and change some on the Smartgart setttings which affect stablity. turn down to AGPx4 and see if that works. There is no performance lost going down to AGPx4 and that should clear it up other than that its driver issues or heat issues. Keep the card cool and download ATItool and override the fan control to 100% fan speed.

as for the card being crap , I can run every game on max settings no problem at resolution of 1024x768 for newer games BF2,COD2 ,

Had the following problems:
- Every 3D game would freeze after a few minutes in the game, the screen would turn black (or sometimes showing some dots), followed by a reboot.

Solved by doing the following:
- Changed the AGP speed in my bios from 8x to 4x.

Additional info:
- ASUS A7V880 Mainboard (VIA chipset)
- ATI 9800
- Windows XP Professional SP2
- DirectX 9.0c
- Omega 2.6.75a display drivers

I've read through almost this entire thread and I understand that it is most likely a problem with my power supply, but I still am not quite comprehending how to understand the workings of the power supply and it's varying outputs to be able to determine on my own a quality power supply. Any help or explanation on this is greatly appreciated and I'll be sure to post my results for whatever methods I decide to use. Thanks and really sad that ATI hasn't stepped up themselves to assist the large customer base affected by this because it seems like they will lose a lot of it.

Also, I think I did narrow it down to a power supply problem because I setup a monitoring program, Asus Probe, and saw that the 3.3 voltage started dipping down, but what I couldn't understand is why that would dip and nothing else did? The voltage reading for the video card stayed fine, 1.7, and considering that the 3.3 volt is for a PCI slot I couldn't understand what was going on, so maybe someone can offer some help on either of my questions. I think its a stretch but could it be the network card, or sound?
