There seems to be some activity at Asus after all, I wish all owners of this card a fully working version of SmartDoctor and a fixed "blank-screen-on-boot" driver / bios.

I don't know if this topic is fading but I thought I might throw in my two cents. I don't know nearly as much as you guys do about computers but I'll try my best to describe MY problem. First my hardware:
ABS Awesome 6300
AMD 64 FX-51 Processor
ASUS motherboard for AMD processors
Built by ATI Radeon 9800 XT
Power Source is and Antec 550W
2GB Corsair RAM

My comp crashes 6 or 7 minutes into playing either Unreal Tourney 2003 or Call of Duty. It happens in the same way described by many. Black screen and sounds looping, then the system restarts itself or else I restart it manually. I don't know what SmartDoctor is but I did a search for it and couldn't find it on my system. This sucks I just got this system and it's clean. SP1 is installed and the newest Catalyst drivers are on my system. Please tell a novice what to do, should I call ABS or ATI? I'm not going to troubleshoot it by uninstalling other hardware devices, that seems a little extreme. And whoever suggested installing Windows ME is an idiot. Please help!

>> Re: Radeon 9800 XT crash problem
i never fixed my problem. i got a 9800 pro instead. havent had any problems since.

i found out that it could be due to a problem with the rx55 memory register. there is a patch here:
http://downloads.viaarena.com/drivers/others/Test_driver1.zip
just search google for "rx55 via" for info.
it will most likely fix your problems from what ive read.

if that doesnt work you might also want to download driver cleaner from http://www.driverheaven.net/cleaner/. to get rid of anything nvidia on your system (although it may be a "fresh" install, windows comes with nvidia drivers. this removes them).

my 9800XT seems to be running fine after i get a new mobo
and the card seems run stable with the asus driver that came with it
no problem with Call of Duty
it also seems like the nForce chipset runs well with the 9800XT

Hehe, people are talking about complelely different problems here. I was reffering to the Asus specific SmartDoctor utility problems and the black screen on boot-problem. I was also running my Asus9800XT at AGP8X / FW enabled with no problems, but as soon as SmartDoctor was installed things got really ugly. Fans spinning down or completely hating, voltage error readings etc etc. But check out the link above, they know the problem and are working on it. Anyway I RMAd my card, will be getting an R420 instead, and it won't be an Asus card this time :D

I just wanted to thank the topic starter for making this thread, and to the people who suggested that it might be an IRQ conflict. My 9800 had the exact problems described in most of the posts here, and when I investigated my vicard's and sound card's IRQ numbers, lo and behold, they were both 11. I moved the sound card to a different slot (changing the # to 12) and haven't had a crash yet. :-)

How do I change my IRQ #? I just ordered an nVidia 5950 and I'm sending my 9800XT back but I'd like to keep it if at all possible.

Hi there,

I have the same problem with a Club3D Radeon 9800 Pro, playing Black Hawk Down, the pc just crashes ands shuts down instantly. I have a Asus A7N*X mobo with Athlon XP 2500+ and 1 gig RAM. I managed to solve the problem after trying everything here read, by putting a bigger cooler on my cpu. I don't know if this makes sense or not, anyway it does not crash anymore now, since cpu temp has gone down from 63-65 C to 54-55.
I wonder if the the radeon uses the cpu. I dunno much about graphic cards, but I always thought that the GPU is taking all the heavy work and not the cpu. Anyway maybe it was a lucky strike but if you are having troubles it might be worth a shot.

>> Radeon 9600 XT 128 meg crash problem A7N8X Deluxe
Hey,

I have tried every possible fix offered in this group. I appreciate all the info provided BTW. I finally
fixed my problem with freeze ups and re-boots after 20 seconds of play on the following games.
Call of Duty, F1 Challenge 99' to 02', and Colin McRae 3. Tried many fixes, but none successful.

Fix was installing ATI Cat 4.2 Driver without the Control Panel.

Second was disabling Q-Fan™ technology in the BIOS--

All is running properly now....

Again this only worked on this type of board

Asus A7N8X Deluxe

XP2400
A7N8X Deluxe
2x512Mb 1x256 pc2700-DDR333 PC2700 AZEN RAM
ATI 9600XT/Sapphire 128 meg
Maxtor 80Gb 7200RPM ATA133 FluidBearing

In response to the question about how to change IRQ's, the only way I've found to change them is by reinstalling windows - it sorts them all out behind the scenes. Ran a search on a prog that would do it without windows but couldn't find one. So reinstalling windows was only option. Of course, my pc crashed on reinstalling windows with a driver error(!), and it only worked by using the 'complete' install option (from new) and on a new hard drive, so make sure you make a backup first!!

Wow lots of problems with the 9800XT

Well............
Me too, i've got installed a Hercules 9800XT Classic, and had the power of/reboot problem. I changed to a Antec 550W PSU, but I think the problem lies with VPU recover and Fast Writes.
When I disabled VPU recover, the problem STOPPED. I left fast writes on. No crash since.
This all kind of makes me wish I bought a FX5950 instead, I've never had any problems with Nvidia. With a brand new, very expensive card, there should be NO NEED TO :

1. Tweak this,
2. Turn that off,
3. Turn this on,
4. Buy this
5. Buy that,
6. F******* Pray it works.

I'm running latest MOBO, XP etc etc. this should not be happening. I saw a link to a ATI hotfix earlier, going to have a look at that now. Good luck.

I got a Radeon 9800XT 256 Mb original and get the VPU recover thing now and then. Not too often though and games never crash but I get it after boot instead so I beleive it has something to do with the loading of drivers at startup. Maby a conflict between drivers-drivers or drivers-programs. Not really a big problem but extremely annoying. Have all functions switched on (fast writes, VPU recover, 8x agp and so on).

Mine is definetly not a heat problem. Have 2 chassis fans and the psu does a good job shifting heat too. I am pretty sure after using computers all my life and working with them that this is a driver issue and nothing else. Nvidias drivers are not perfect either with bad TV-out, weird driver breakdowns now and then and so on. I'm sure ATI will fix this. They have had some very serious issues with drivers earlier and fixed many problems so why should they not fix this? I mean can all your cards of different models be broken? There is a definite no on that question.

Not sorry I chose ATi though. It's blisteringly fast and have better picture-quality in desktop work.
