  SATA Worth it?
 Date Written
Dayton Egloff Nov 17, 2003, 11:08am EST Report Abuse
To all those who are using SATA: Is it really worth it? Can you tell the speed difference and the overall difference? Are the new features really that great? I'm still skeptical because it was just recently introduced. Let me know what everyone thinks.

Man..i just got 2 WD Raptors 36.7Gig, 10k RPMs SATA each and I'm using it in RAID 0 (striping) OMG its not just faster than my old IDE ATA100 7200 Rpm's , ITS AMAZING!!!!!!!! I load games in 2-4 seconds !!

P4 3.06Ghz
1Gb PC-2700 Dual Channel
Gigabyte V8 Ultra 512mb G-DDR
2x WD Raptors RAID 0
SB Audigy 2 Platinum

SO Overall if youre deciding in getting SATA HD over the IDE , GO FOR SATA RAID!!

Can we get any more feedback on this subject from other people with SATA?

SATA is without a doubt worth it. Seagate Barracuda 80GB, even without RAID, loads Windows in about 10 seconds, from bootscreen to desktop. Try doing that with IDE. SATA is the future and if you're not in you're gonna get left behind.

Well Ive being using SATA for about 8 months now.

Ive had zero problems with it, and typically get a data transfer rate of about 40MB/s (benchmarked from aida32)

Ive been looking into getting a second drive to do some RAID, as thats where the real money is with SATA. Other than that its not much faster than normal IDE. YET.

As I imagined, it sounds like the only real difference is in the 10,000 RPM Raptor because it's faster. I might just end up getting one of those... Anyone know where I can get a bargain on one?

Here is the deal. You can get one Raptor at 36.7GB for about $117, or you can buy two 40GB EIDE 8MB buffered HDDs for About $100 and throw them into a Raid-0. It will be faster, cheaper and bigger. If money is not an issue, then go with two SATA Raptors. I am not wealthy, so EIDE is my best rout.
