I recently purchased this presario 715us, but I found that the solder for the ac socket is bad. That means using the ac adapter won't work. I resoldered the socket to the copper trace. But all that I get is the ac plug light (on laptop), power light (on LCD), and battery light (on LCD). Besides those, the laptop makes absolutely no sound. I don't hear the hard drive or fans or dvd/cdrw drive. They just remain quiet & nothing on LCD.

I note that once in awhile (maybe most of the time), the floppy drive makes a noise when I turn on the laptop. It lasts for about one second. It's probably the read/write head jerked a little. The floppy's light remains "off".

What part(s) or component(s) on the mobo that can be deffective and cause these symptoms? I heard that this series along w/ other Presario series have this similar problems. Did anyone successfully fix it, short of buying a new mobo ($300+) or professional repair ($???)?

i too recently bought a compaq presario 2175US. within a month!!! of purchase the laptop wont turn on--no power was gettin through via battery or ac adapter--no led lights turnin on, period! i contacted compaq and after much fussin and trouble shooting, they told me to "hard reset" it. that means, takin out the battery and disconnecting the AC and then holding down the power button for 1 minute. then reconnecting the AC and turning it on. it worked! fast forward two months later. the same sh_t happens. unfortunately, this time, the "hard reset" option does NOT work either. im glad i have insurance, cuz honestly, i think compaq (or at least the presario line) makes substandard junk.

I own a compaq presario 2825EA, and I have the same problem :((

Yesterday, I unfortunately used up the battery so my laptop stopped working and then I cannot turn it on again :( I've tried the "hard reset" of Joey b but it didn't work.

Anyone can help me (us) to solve the problem, please? Thx.

Tran, Can you tell if the AC port is loose at all? That is a very common failure for laptops in general. If it is loose, it means you have to take it to a Laptop repair tech or send it in to CompaQ (given your still under warranty).

If the AC port is not loose, are you positive that the AC adapter is working properly? ...

This particular scenerio can end up being one of many different problems. From your CPU to the onboard video chipset. I suggest you check out one thing at a time until you can narrow it down. Good luck.

AC adapter: I have ac plug light (on laptop), power light, and battery light so I think it works, is it right?

I'll try your suggestion, thx.

Okay, Now that you know that the AC port and the AC adapter is working.

Are you getting external video? ...Try hooking up a external monitor.
Can you hear the laptop trying to boot? ..e.g. Hard Drive spinning up, Floppy Disk Drive noise, etc.
Does it smell like anything has burnt?
Is there anything that sounds loose when you shake it?

Let me know what you get. :)

substandard junk...lol, you'd be correct. The quality of all laptops are not what they should be...IMO. Especially when you fork out so much damn cash for one.

My friend has the same problem with a Compaq Presario 722ca. It seemed to work here and there if we waited for a few hours. Now it's been 5 days since it turned on. Correct that... It just turned on... It's using AC power with the battery out of the unit. The problem is it can run 3 minutes and just go blank and play dead or it can last as long as I want to use it.

Had identical problem. Take the adapter in hand. With a magnifier look into end plug that goes into the laptop socket. You will see two prongs inside. With something very fine like a needle or paper clip push the contacts a LITTLE closer together. BE CAREFUL NOT TO EXERT TOO MUCH FORCE thus breaking contacts. Now replug and the full voltage will allow your laptop to start.

I'll have to check the AC plug when I get home. The thing is, I still have the same thing with it using just battery. BTW, what do the battery test lights mean on the battery? I get 25-Red and the others green.

I have a Compaq 2700US. I have about the same problem as the others - press the power button - hear the hard drive, then the Compaq logo appears on the screen, then the hard drive goes dead and nothing happens. Sits like a duck with a huge logo on the screen.

>> Similar (?? or just other) problems with Compaq Presario 2715US
I'm glad I found this page! Let me recount MY problems with this computer!

I got this laptop "refurbished" in June 2003 from compusa.com.

About two wks ago, a problem started developing: after the CPU ran at a hi rate (100%) for a *little while* (like when performing a Narton virus scan) it suddenly would shut off- no warning, no logo, NOTHING, just "plop" and off!

The issue quickly became worse- after about a half hour, it would shut off. Then, since it was warm, it would take about 5 minutes for it to shut off again. If I waited a day for it to cool down, it would be another 30min, then repeat.

I took it to Seattle Laptop (a very reputable shop) and they said it was a DEFECT OF THE MODEL, that (and I'm paraphrasing) the way the CPU is soldered to the motherboard, it doesn't cool properly and thus melts the soldering. As a defense, the computer shuts off, to prevent any damage from the CPU wiggling around on the motherboard.

My question for you: Has anyone heard of this before? The people at Seattle Laptops said they've had about 12 of these, and the shop at CompUSA concured. I'm currently battling Compaq, as I think they should pay for this, being a model defect.

Your opinions/experience, please!!

Thank you!

thanks for that tidbit of information. ive never heard of it, but it certainly makes sense. there is absolutely nothing wrong with my 2175us--except for the fact that it shuts down and wont turn on until given sufficient time to "rest". the whole thing about AC-adaptors not workin is, as far as my case is concerned, inapplicable since even with a full battery charge, it wont turn on. its happened to me several times already and the last couple of times, i did absolutely NOTHING except WAIT for several days and the thing restarted again. i even had the embarrassing incident of takin the damn thing to a shop and saying "i dont know whats wrong with it, it wont power on"--only to have the guy press the power button and the whole thing turned on.

It seems all compaq laptops are infected by this problem. I also had similar problem couple of months ago. In my case when I pressed the POWER button to switch on the laptop, only the power light used to come on with some noise from floppy drive only, no display & laptop seemed to freeze.

If you also have a similar problem, I recommend you to insert a bootable floppy inside the floppy drive before switching on the laptop & then press POWER button. Try it twice or thrice.

The Boot-up mechanism checks all the hardware before starting Windows. Some times floppy drive doesn't allow the laptop to boot further by either not responding or sending wrong signal.

The worst part is, in my opinion, Compaq/HP's response: their customer service is attrocious, and if you DO talk to anybody, they're completely unsympathetic and unwilling to own up to DEFECTS in THEIR PRODUCTS! I'm considering my options right now, but does anyone want to start a 'compaq sucks' website/campaign or something of the sort?

Try booting your laptop from a bootable floppy if you have one. Or use Compaq's Recovery CD. But I doubt if you use recovery CD, you might lose data on your HDD. Which O.S. are you using?

I've tried using a boot floppy on it but still nothing. It just does the same thing. A buzz from the floppy drive and nothing after.

well i can see tha t th epower doesnt reach the mother board coz even the cd/dvd drive wont function and i have to use the emergency eject button to open it.Do these laptops have some kind of safety fusewhich relays the power from the ac point to the motherboard?

I have a few compaq Presario 1247 laptops with this same problem. The power supply lights but the battery charge led won't light and the unit is dead quiet. My guess is that a capacitor dries up and changes value in the switching power supply and I am going to work on one of the motherboards until I find the problem. If I do I will alert you to what it is. I did find that an ic gets hot when these go dead but stays cool when they work so I changed it but it still didn't fix it. I do know it is definatley on the mobo.

From my experience on my 721AP, make sure that you screw the heat sink real tight to the CPU. I also applied some heat transfer glue. Its all because of the overheated CPU. Design problem.

The cannot power up problem also happened to me during my warranty period. The service center applied some ROMPAQ to it and it is working fine for a year already. Some software problem I guess.

And the problem now suddenly my battery cannot charge anymore. The red charge light is on but the percent of power is always 0. Happened before also and the service center gave me a new battery during the warranty period. Now the warranty is over, so any ideas anyone except to go and buy a new battery.
