Has anyone else owned a Dell P991 monitor. I don't know if it's just mine since I bought it at a show (and it's refurbished) or this model sucks. Does anyone know anything about it. My problem is that the screen goes blurry just to the point that it hurts the eyes, kinda like a slighty out of focus camera. I got a ATI 9800XT and tried plugging the cable into both the crt plug and the lcd -crt adapter. Newest drivers and everything. Anyone know anything?

take that Monitor Back if u can and Buy a Good one Not Refurbished, Refurbished got to be careful with because even tho they are that doesnt mean they dont have Future Problems.

are you using the newest ati drivers, the 3.9's? if you are, thats your problem. uninstall them and go try the 3.7's.

EMI from Speakers can have this effect on a monitor.
The magnetism causes distortion of the electron flow from the cathode gun in the CRT.

Try moving your speakers well away from the monitor.

If this doesnt work, then its probably a new monitor needed as suggested.

My Dell P991 monitor just "died."
It worked great for the past 4 years.

The power led starts out green and then goes flashing yellow/amber (called DPMS or power save mode in the manual.)

When I power it up disconnected from the video card the screen stays blank and doesn't show a self-test display like mentioned in the manual.

I contacted Dell support and of course they were virtually no help and just 'recommend' that I buy a new one. I find it unbelievable that you can't expect a ten-year life span out of these monitors! What a rip off!

Anyway...I am still in "denial" and looking for some way to fix the monitor cheaply and not give-in to this evil rip-off-based electronics biz!

Anyone out there manage to fix their "dead" P991?

Thanks

Dude! Should Of Never went with Dell, they only expect you to run it for 2 years, If you buy a Computer from them you only get 1 year warranty, if a component like the HD Dies(usually from WD) you cant RMA that HD to WD, cause that is considered Dells OEM component. Never go with Dell, Best Monitor that i know of is from NEC/Mitsubishi, Hercules maybe good same with Samsung.

I also have a Dell p991 and after awhile the screen gets blurrier and blurrier, untill it flashes, and then it gets clear again. Also if I turn off the monitor, and back on again it gets clear for awhile.

Hi Seth,

Yes I would go with Ikanfixit's suggestion,
The Symptons do indicate that the "line output transformer" could be faulty, but it is most likely to be the large electrolytic capacitor (condenser) associated with the LOT which is showing high resistance leakage under certain thermal conditions.

As it is already a refurbished Monitor, it would be wise to dispose of it....it's probably already had the capacitor replaced in the past ....

Incidently the Dell P991 Monitor is made by SONY.....:-)) :-))...for the record.

As most of you are probably aware..... Dell and other Computer Manufactures don't make computers....they buy parts in quantity from outside sources and assemble them.......like most of all the others do.

I get exactly the same problem, it goes blurry, then sometimes makes a small pop and goes back clear. Or if i turn it off and on again it stays clear for a while then goes blurry again. Is it worth getting it reparied? I would of thought that if this monitor is made by sony it would last quite a while.

Hi , cant help you with that im afraid , my P991 has been work fine since i got it in Dec 99. Any way i got
a problem.
When I which on my monitor it switches straight oFF? does anyone know how to discharge the build up of static electricity. I believe this invloves disconnecting the cable to the tower and then hold the on button
for a number of seconds, but im not sure. I had the same prob 3 years ago, when it was under warrany and dell's online tech support solved the problem.

I am having to hold the ON button down and type with one hand here!

I have noe and love it, i picked it up in the garbage after hurricane katrina 2+ years ago.
Someone threw it away, irt works perfect.
If another monitor works, then its not the video card, if another monitor has trouble then it is the video card.
this monitor do not need drivers, (only video cards really need them)

Hello Friends,

The Dell UltraScan P991 19-inch (17.952-inch VIS) color monitor is loaded with features at an affordable price that's perfect for the demanding corporate professional. Whether you are purchasing your first computer or maintaining product consistency through the corporate rank and file, you will appreciate what the UltraScan P991 monitor has to offer. The UltraScan P991 Color Monitor has a flat display that helps minimize geometric distortion and reduces reflective glare that may cause eyestrain. The 19-inch (17.952-inch VIS) monitor segment has been around for a while, so you don't have to worry about a new technology being introduced rendering your current UltraScan P991 monitor obsolete.

Best Regards
Steven Arnold
