If you are getting this error message first diconnect the printer and network cable. After that disconnect all USB devices.
Then Restart your computer and go to BIOS set all USB devices to no boot.

You will not get that error messages again.

try unplugging all the cables at the back of your tower except for the monitor, power, keyboard, & mouse cables. then, resume reinstalling your windows xp.

Question????

We just recently started using VONAGE.COM for our home phone service - and that is when we started to get the \windows\system32\config\system ERROR????

Basically I have my home Cable modem that hooks into a Linkseye Router with a phone port in the back which allows the phone to connect over the broadband.

thanks,

Joe

Try pressing F1 when you get to the blank screen. The computer may be trying to load a S.M.A.R.T. error and not processing it. This *might* bypass it.

I just tried to change cd-rom drives and my system worked until I took out the new cd-rom and put the old one back. Now, none of the safe mode features even works, and I don't know too much about computers so I didn't make a back up of the system. now whenever I try to reinstall Xp it just freezes and says bad pool caller. If only I can get a command prompt I'd be able to reformat right? where do I go from here? cause every time if I don't have the Xp install disk in it says windows/system32/config/system is corrupt or missing. if I do have the disk in it says bad pool caller. HELP!!

I had the same exact problem. Look here. http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/44939/ More exactly, look here. http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_sys32.htm Print it off, and just do exactly what says. If you don't understand part (or all) of it, just let us know.

I've been experiencing those same problems with this message, I've reinstaller XP several times, last time the computer worked fine for about 3 weeks (that was a lot!) and now i have the computer back in my shop for analysis.

The steps for solving the problem are a lot, the easyest way is to reinstall windows (very long and boring), but, I still haven't found the root of the problem: Why do de registry gets lost? A Spyware? A Virus? maybe the Hard Drive gets very warm, maybe the chipset in the motherboard, or perhaps a problem with the memory dims.

Any idea?

Regards.

Hi. Got the same error message on one of our company laptops running XP. I ended up recreating the boot.ini file. This is the second time it's happened on our company laptops. Can't seem to determine what is causing. Hardware failure perhaps?

I've got the same windows\system32\config\system and bad_pool_caller problems

I try to read all the replys but my English sucks (I'm from the Netherlands) so it's hard for me to find out the solution.

Oke first I give a change in the bios so I can boot up from a cd-rom drive. I put in my XP cd-rom and when they asked it I press 'r'. After that I get a blackscreen with white letters (again :-P) that says in Dutch type a instalation number to contine or press enter to exit. The big problem is that I don't know the installation number. Pressing things like 'r' or 'y' don't work even when I type numbers. I can only press one letter or one letter not more. When I press the number 1 the computer reacts and give me a blue screen that tells me BAD_POOL-CALLER. I don't want to format my harddisk because of the important stuff. I'm in college.

Try this: http://www.myfixes.com/articles/system .

It is an optimized version of the Microsoft article that describes how to recover from registry corruption. Practically describes how to perform a manual System Restore .

Well thnx for that topic guess it could help me a lot. But however the problem is solved. Setting the harddisk as a slave and your other harddisk as master. You must instal XP or another program. Windows will start up with your other harddisk (master) and you can look and delete windows in your other harddisk.

I own a computer repair shop in Omaha and one in Lincoln, NE. We have had over 30 customers come into our Service Centers in the past 3 days complaining that their windows/system32/config/system file is missing.

Normally we would just replace it with a backup and send them on their way. But there is a new problem that has emerged in the past few days. It seems tat now the entire c:\windows\system32\config folder is missing all together. Since this folder stores important information about your profile, applications, and registry, the computer will not boot and you can not log into the recovery console to attempt a repair.

There is no known remedy for this problem, other than backing up your data, reinstalling Windows XP, and then copying your data back over and reinstalling your applications. Even after that, it is entirely possible that your computer will simply crash again later with the same problem.

We have created a simple DOS batch file as well as a tutorial that shows you how to use it that will back up your config folder *in case* this should happen to you again. We have also listed instructions on how to recover your Windows installation using that backup in the event of a crash.

You can view the tutorial and download the backup tool at:

http://www.schrockinnovations.com/preventsys32config.php. Sorry to anyone out there who has been nailed by this, and I hope this backup batch program will help save you in the future.

I am pretty computer illiterate so this might seem like a stupid question, but I want to make sure about this. Can I reinstall XP without reformatting my computer? If yes, will I still have all of my "stuff" on my computer when I reinstall (ex. pictures, musics, papers, etc.)? I just want to be able to get all of that stuff saved to a CD or jump drive before I attempt to try and fix this problem. Any information about this is greatly appreciated. Thanks

A friend f mine had this problem and I was looking online for ways to help him when I found thor schrocks post about preventing the problem before it happens. I looked through the tutorial and ran the backup utility on the website. The next week my computer blew up with the exact same problem! I wasn't able to fix my buddys computer, but since I had run that backup on my PC I was able to get mine back up and running from the backup.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SAVING MY BUTT!!!!!

I have the same problem ($\windows\system32\config\system....missing or corrupt).. seems it got something to do with hardware or software (Yeah it all has), becouse I re-installed my pc many times now and the problem keeps getting back, even with a other HD,CPU,dimm.

So It's mobo or software cosing this problem.

Program's i never used before this problem accured:
- Skype (3 versions already so..)
- New version of crapcleaner
- New version of netlimiter

* I also disabled restore fuction in XP(SP2) but I alway's done that for the last 3 years (XP, XPSP1, XPSP2)

Nice tuts here seems the cant help me but anyway..

My solution was simple.
I booted to the Windows XP SP2 cd.
I ran CHKDSK.
Then I ran CHKDSK /R
Altough I did NOT get a report on the second running of CHKDSK with the switch /R
my non-bootable Windows XP SP2 is now fully functioning. Go figure!? Pap

NEW ENTRY:Saturday Aug 19th,2006

TOSHIBA Satellite M35X-S161 s/n Z4394275K

"Windows cannot start because of missing or corrupt file:
\windows\system32\config\system"

The above message appears onscreen with an additional recommendation to RESTORE the system from the restoration cd by pressing "r"

Following the recommendation leads to a screen that informs you that all the files MAY be deleted from your hard drive during this RESTORATION procedure; please back-up all files before proceeding!!!

'DAH; how can I backup if I can't boot?'

Well that was NOT good enough for this user so I did the unthinkable . . . I used a Windows XP SP2 installation cd as the booting media for this laptop after setting the boot sequence to the cd rom drive as first choice.

From the cd I ran, of all things, CHKDSK; which is a very old Dos disk checking program circa 1980 & before.
It found and corrected file errors using the Windows XP SP2 installation files on the cd which was running CHKDSK. It took less than ten minutes and the laptop is operational. End of story.

ps: By the way Microsoft's procedure for accomplishing the same "cure" is about six pages of renaming, deleting and reloading registry entries. If anyone knows what causes this Windows XP SP2 lock-out.32 they have not yet published same. <papsamuels@access4less.net>
