My current system is a asus A7V266-E, amd 1900XP+, 512 pc2100, maxtor 120 gig 8mb, wireless linksys ethernet card, and asus radeon 9800 xt. Installed the card after a fresh format with windows xp sp1, the problem is when i play games i get this flickering, and if i luck out to get into a game by clicking around (the screen just clips u can't see crap) it looks like constant clipping (moving through walls). I had a 300 watt p/s called asus they said it may be the p/s so i got a 420 watt antec, still clips. I know the board is agp 4x, and the cpu and ram are a lil slow for the card, but it still should work. I put the card in another computer, and got the same problems. The computers i tired them in were agp4 x though. I've tried all the drivers, on cd, asus site, ati site, and omega drivers, still clips and flickers. plus when the computer first boots up after the windows xp screen, the mniter turns off and thne turns on a a bit later when windows finally loads up. So whats the problem!? I'm gonna try it in my friends 8x board and see if it works, hopefully it's just a defective card. Any help is greatly appreciated

Hiya - which catalyst are you using? there have been reports - not apparently verified in any testing lab - that 3.8 can have issues with monitor refresh rates. See http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/article/1673/

Hey everybody!
After reading all these reviews and troubleshooting from missfortune Ati(9700pro-9800) owners
I am starting to think, if it's wise to buy a radeon card and instead turn to one of Nvidia's Ge-Force? What do you think? Is there any stable RADEON graphic card or what?
And Do I need to buy an Asus motherboard in order to have compatibility and reduce some
problems i might face by using another 875chipset motherboard? my budget for graphic card
ranges from 200-250 Euros including the taxes and shipping cause i live in Greece.
And for the motherboard about the same price...! What do you recomment?
Also can anyone recommend me a decent sound card and a TFT (17") or CRT(19")
screen withj decent picture resolution up to 300-500Euro for the screen and about 150-200Euro
for the sound card?
Thanks in advance!
Christos K.

Lo all,
ive just put together a system using the ASUS A7N8X-X (Rev 2.0) (BIOS REV- 1006) RELEASE DATE 08/19/2003.........with 1 Gig of corsair 3200...an Athlon 2500+ clocked to 3200+.(AKASA cooling)....using the Asus Radeon 9800XT drivers that came out the box 6.14.10.6378 HARD DRIVES 1x160gig ..1x120gig ...system running fine...run 3D benchmark ...score (7468)....dunno if this is good or not, cos the pc aint got net access yet...waiting to see if all runs ok.
I did have a fault when booting into windows XP proffesional after playing with overclock settings for the card..i presume it was that or maybe some of the softare i installed, not sure..had to format and re-install XP Pro with service pack 1..........all running fine....hope this info helps someone at least..

ps: The power supply is 500 watt...all encased in an F1-enzo case...the reason for the big psu..is i got more lights in it than the xmas tree i took down just a few weeks ago

I have a A7N8X Deluxe MB with asus 9800xt graphics, and have also noticed stuttering graphics. The only remedy I was able to come up with was to disable vertical sync. I don't know if this is the cause of your problems if you haven't already rma'd the card back to asus, but I set custom settings using latest catalyst drivers, with vertical sync set to always off and haven't had a problem since.

>> Gigabyte Radeon 9800 Pro 128 artifacts
Ya...I'm getting artifacts when I play games like Max Payne 2, Diablo but not in GTA2. Rogue spear just freezes on me. I thought it was my mobo because I had overheating problems with my previous Nvidia Geforce 4 TI 4800 128mb card. So I went out and got an Asus P4P800 Deluxe and 1gig of Mushkin memory. No luck. (Damn board had other probs and fried my 3ghz Intel CPU)...anyway, anyone have any fixes for this? Anyway, I returned the Asus Mobo and Mushkin memory. Same prob.

Contact ATI.
How did you install the 9800xt drivers? Though experience, if you install overtop of older drivers, you may eather get a performance boost or instability.

I installed the Ati drivers from the Cd that dint work so I uninstalled them then installed newest ones from the Asus websight and still have same problems.
I uninstalled the 9800xt video card and reinstalled my Ti-200 64meg card with no problems.
What stinks is all these hi meg video cards and most of these supposedly high end games work just ao almost just as well on my 64meg card .Only difference i have seen is the games are a little clearer .
Anyway I have orderd a Antec True 550wat power source for my pc to see if this helps .

Make sure, when you uninstall the Drivers, go to it's folder and delete anything related to the vid card drivers. Then do a fresh install.

I recently heard the Asus video card needs 3.3 volt not the1.5 or in that range. My mothertboard does not support the 3.3 volt card.Is that the reason for the seperate power plug on the video card to get direct voltage so we can use it on the 1.5 volt boards ?

Do you have the link which says 3.3v? I have heard of something in that nature, but never researched it.

I have an Asus K8VSE Deluxe Mainboard, Asus 9800PRO 256mb AGP Card, 2 CDROMS, 2 HDD's, some lights and a 400W Q-Tec Gold PSU to power the lot. I have the same 'Black screen with computer still running' problem. I cant do anything except reset using the button!

So, having an ASUS system dont help at all. I've tried just running the basics - that didnt help either.

I suggest that if you have ANY problems - send the bugger back. I was using mine up until it stopped working completely (no VGA output on boot). There is a non PSU related problem here. I'm sending mine back but I wont be changing it for a nVidia card thats for sure.

I would say it looks like you are operating the 9800XT in qwuite an old mobo and that could be the problem. I tonly supports AGP 4x so don't expect to see any real performance out of that setting

i have the same problem as you...in every games is breaks all over...even in those older games in which a 32 mb vga would handle... i dont know what else to do i've tried other monitors because my older one was a little bit week for the vga but it wasnt that. i ve always played online games such as unreal tournament and tactical ops and now i cant even do that because it seems like been playing in a 16 mb card except for the very good quality of graphics. pls if you know whats is causing that problem pls tell me :(
