Nib NIb

I was haing the exact same problem as you stated, and then I noticed that the jumper CLRTC1 was not set correctly. The settings for this are one p 2-20 of the manual. I set it back to the default state and it quit powering down.

>> Re: ASUS PC-DL deluxe boot problems
I also have a rather serious problem with my ASUS PC-DL.

Specs on my machine are:
MoBo: ASUS PC-DL
CPU: 2 Xeon (Socket 604, 533FSB, 512K) 3.06GHz OEM
RAM: DDRAM TRANSCEND|PC2700 1GB RTL
Graphics card: ATi Radeon 9700 PRO 128MB 8X AGP W/TV DVI
HD: Maxtor 200GB UIDE 3LP 1in 7200RPM MX6Y200P0
PSU: Vantec 520A (520 Watts) - has the 24pin SSI and the 8-pin ATX power

I have been through the Ram and Power Supply trials (had to swap Ram and the PS) and it seemed I was about to begin OS installation, but nooo......
I flashed the bios to ver6 (PCDL1006.bin) and now it will not boot. It starts the boot, I get a video signal, which displays
"ASUS..Dual XEON.. Capability , Stability, Reliabiltiy Press [Alt f2] to enter setup"
but nothing happens. just freezes there. does not respond to any keystrokes, not even Ctrl-alt-del.

It seems I had a bad flash or something. so I thought I should try flashing the bios again.
I Cleared the RTC ram using the CLRTC jumper, and then rebooted and pressing del.
I get the same ASUS screen, with it saying

"Entering Setup....."
but it never enters setup.

If I had a bad bios flash, would I even get a video signal?

I am assuming that I did experience a bad BIOS flash, and I'm not sure what to do next. Is it possible to recover from a bad BIOS flash using the CLRTC1 jumper reset method? (I have tried this a ciouple times with no luck) Or must I replace the BIOS ROM chip? I suppose I should send it back to the manufacturer for an RMA swap.
Does anyone know iwhich version of the BIOS is best? is v004 more stavle than v006?

thanks

Thomas

I just put my system together and ran into the same problem. Yes, I was not happy like many people here. However, I manage to fix the problem by connecting the four pin 12v cable. I forgot to do this and only connected the main 20 pin cable.

Here's what I worked with:
Dual 3.06
ATI Radeon 9800 PRO 256MB DVI
Corsair TWINX1024-2700LLPT 1GB DDR333 XMS2700
Ultra ULT31554 X-Connect 500W ATX
IBM 18GB SCSI 15,000 RPM
Pioneer DVR108BK 16X Dual Layer DVD-Recordable / ReWritable

Does anybody have a solution for board not booting up? Fresh build, all fans start then it dies.
everything new?
2 xeon 3.06
2 gig pc2700
2 raptor 36.7's
mx 4000-t64
550 power with 24pin & 8pin
machine is going to be a server (if it ever boots up) so not expensive video

A Couple of things. First, when the red light comes on, at least the manual I have says that it indicates the processors are mismatched or have different power characteristics. Regardless, my red light is on and I get nothing during POST either. Waiting from a callback from ASUS with hopefully a bit of magic but I'm assuming I'll have to crate the monster up and ship it back (bummer because this board was a replacement for my original that had the IDE controller fail).

The other problem noted about the fans coming on and going off. I noticed that I had that happen and I had forgotten to connect the 8-pin power connector.

All in all I thought the ASUS board was great. The original ran for about 9 months with no problems at all. One day it stopped recognizing my EIDE drives (still recognized the CD-ROM). The drives are good and work in at least two other systems I tried them in.

I think I might abandon the ASUS at this point though. I've been down for 4 weeks and getting a bad replacement is a bit frustrating.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Hi, everybody.

I have 3 PC-DL DeLuxe mb's working, 2 as server- and 1 as workstation, up and running for about 11 months.
So far, non of the numerous boot problems posted in this forum have materialized with my PC-DL boxes.
Actually, apart from the usual ASUS bios oddities, I have had no problems at all.
Bottom line: I like the speed and endurance of my PC-DL as workstation, often juggling 5 to 6 applications simultaneousely without noticable slowdowns.
However, being a "dual CPU geek" since the mid 90's I know from experience that the leading cause of most boot to post faillures- sudden restarts- and BSOD issues with dual CPU rigs is inadequate PSU's (not enough startup current capable)
The PC-DL or any other Dual Xeon mobo need a high powered professsional PSU with 24/8 pin connectors.
Most standard PSU's- even 500W units are unable to keep all voltages stable during start up.
I strongly recommend Enermax (2 models), or PC Power&Cooling model 510 XE.
You can find the details here ----> http://www.pcpowerandcooling.com/about/index_whatnew510.htm
Cause Number 2 is memory. Always check out if a dual mobo accepts registered DDR, if so, use that instead of standard DDR, and invest at least in 2 x 512 MB.
When you build your Dual CPU rig, it's a good idea to start up the first time without your HD's and other stuff connected, but with bare minimum FDD and a simple AGP video card only.
After your first sucessful boot, add one at a time the rest of your stuff. This way, its easy to pinpoint problem components.
Specs of my PC-DL: 2 x Xeon 3.0xG @ 3073MHz, 2G Kingston DDR333, Enermax EG465P-VE 24P PSU,
Adaptec 29320 SCSI adapter with 2 x Maxtor Atlas 10K4 73GB, and 2 x 120GB SATA WD1200JD drives.
Video: NV GF5900. OS's: W2K and Debian Linux on workstation, and RedHat Fedora Core 2 on the servers.

Well, I should have posted this earlier but of course when you don't have a problem being motivated to post is not quite as high. Anyway, it turns out that my motherboard problem was actually a powersupply that went bad. Antec is repairing it as soon as I send it in ;-0

Anyway, after we figured this out I have to say ASUS we really good about the problem and overnighted a new board after I contacted them about the BIOS problem.

One other item to note, this with a Tyan motherboard not ASUS but may apply to someone else in the future, if you are having a problem where the system started to boot and then powered off. Make sure that the heat syncs on the processors are corrrectly installed. If there is not a good bond between the processor and the motherboard it may trigger a power off as the processor htemprature climbs to protect them from overheating.

Cheers.

Matt

I bought four of these puppies and two failed right off the start. I changed XEON 3.06 CPUs, I changed Power supplies too - Antec 550W EPS12v, I changed memory, and nothing worked. I contacted my supplier (http://www.NCIX.com) and they gave me an RMA number. Well after a few days I heard back from the head Tech, it seems that the the stand-offs on the second CPU (the one towards the center more) mounting plate were shorting out the tracers on the motherboard. I checked this out for myself on the second bad MB - Sure enough there it was a tracer was being pinched and shorting out on the mounting plate. I placed four red paper washers on all eight posts of both processors and Voila! I had a good solid system. Just thought I passed that on to anyone else who was having "CPU" errors - Marinus.

I have two PC-DL Deluxe systems. I also had a hard time getting one to boot up. I tried everything. I finally narrowed it down to the mounting of the fan and processor on socket 2, the one near the center. It was causing a short. I put several paper washers and it seemed to solve the problem. My other system was also having strange power events so I did the same thing, both work great now. If you're having trouble booting, or if your system is acting strangely, I highly suggest to first install one processor in socket 1 (the socket near the end). and see if you get a successful boot. If so then try adding paper washers on socket 2 (the one near the center). - Fabian.

not booting - just powers up - lights on the board - no beeps - no access to the floppy drive.

All seemingly from a bad bios update using the windows update program.

Has anyone got a fix for this - trying a dos bootable disk but as the floppy is not firing up I'm at a loss - may try burning a cd but seems not to read anything!!

Anyone?

I have the exact same thing on my friend's comp. I am worried that it means the Promise controller built into the motherboard may be hosed. Not sure yet but I will have to call Asus to probably find out.
Will not read ide drives or disks in dvd drive
