firstly yiu want to make sure you do have a open gl gfx card. they've been around for some time now so most people have. i used to get this error but i fixed some how, i cant realy remember how, but the best way to see results is to do a clean install of windows. That should yeild the highest successe rate. If you dont want to do a clean install of windows you could try GL setup this will find and download the lastest open gl drivers for your gfx card.

One note about Sci techs GL Direct. i wouldnt bother with it because it is emulation software therefore by definition you wouldnt get as high performance as you would if your using native GL.

Error 34:
There was no error

I had the GLW_startOpenGL() problems before and I fixed it using your solution. But right now when I start the game it says WARNING: Medal of Honor requires a video card with multitexturing capability. It worked ABSOLUTLY FINE on Win ME. So...NOW what? Someone please help me!

Hi,
Your problem is simple. Just install the original drivers that came with your Graphics Card and your game will run instantly. Have Fun. If you have any problems contact me on my e-mail.
Virtually yours

Hi,

Thanks for your help, but this is not the solution, because after i post my problem i tried a 3 different video cards with their updated drivers on my friend's computer and the game worked perfect. I even installed his video card on my computer, but it didn't work.
MOHAA worked on my computer, but it has a gray screen in the main menu and during the game, the compass is gray and also the sniper gun.
So it seems that the video card and the drivers are not the problem.

Now, from my problems experience, the solution for the openGL problem is to update the video card drivers from the internet, it is important to get it from the card manufacturing. 90% of the cases it solve it.

Regards,
Louay

I finally got rid the error message "GLW_StartOpenGL() - could not load OpenGL subsystem." I follow what Farhan and some others said about upgrade video card drivers and now I am able to play Hexen II and RTCW.

I upgrade my nvidia geforce 3 drivers for Nvidia and I did not see the error message and able to play games flawlessly. I didnot upgrade the drivers from Microsoft which did not work for me. But try either one, Microsoft or your video card manufactor.

I hope this can help someone.

Thanks

Jonathan

I messed up my RTCW by playing around with the resolution. It was working well, but after I made an adjustment, it gave me the "GLW_StartOpenGL() - could not load OpenGL subsystem" error.

WELL I FIXED THE PROBLEM MENTIONED ABOVE!!!

I simply went into c:\programfiles\returntocastlewolfenstein\main\wolfconfig.cfg
There, I simply MOVED (instead of deleting) the "wolfconfig.cfg" file.

This file was messed up in some way. I then started the game, and I assume it made a brand new "config" file automatically. The game is running just fine.

I have a brand new Gateway with the Nvdia card everybody else is talking about. PLEASE, if this helps ANYBODY, please let me know. I sincerely hope I helped. This #*@(# problem has caused me great stress and has cost me about 3 to 4 hours of my time. I know what a pain it is to not be able to play your game! hehe

>> "GLW_StartOpenGL() - could not load OpenGL subsystem"... The REAL solution!
Hi!

I think i've found a nice, simple and fast solution for our trouble... It works for me, and can you tell me (ruturlin@globetrotter.net) if it works for you too?

The solution is: NEVER set your game resolution HIGHER than the desktop one, or you'll get this pretty opengl error message. So if you want to run the game in 1024x768, set this resolution for the desktop and THEN run the game... :)

I got a geforce 4 ti4200 8x 128mo ddr and running the Quake 3 engine at 1280x1024... Please e-mail me if it's working on other cards!

thx

On my MOHAA i too get the openGL problem. I have never had this problem on my computer before and i have downloaded and used all the patches and it still doesnt work. I have also discovered that my 3dfxvgl.dllfile is missing and i have reinstalled the drivers and i still do not have one. So if anyone could help me email me at crap_in_a_can@hotmail.com and also could someone send me a working 3dfxvgl.dll file please (3dfx voodoo3 2000)

thnx

I've gotten that message a few times in the past. Here's what worked for me, but may not work for you.

Updated video card drivers.
Removed the game from system.
Installed DirectX again.
Reinstalled game.

You can say whatever, but this has worked for me with MOHAA and quite a few other games.

Good Luck and hope you find an answer,
Jay

Life is too short, make the best of it!
