I wonder how stupid Windows XP is. Here is the story....
I waked up in the morning and started my computer. I worked fine and I checked in SANDRA to see how things are going (I do that every day to check the system). Sandra told me that the new graphic card XABRE 400 which I have installed have no IRQ. So I shut down and restarted the computer, went into BIOS, didn't do anything there and restarted the system again.

Suddenly I had this stupid message - WINDOWS COULD NOT START BECAUSE THE FOLLOWING FILE IS MISSING OR CORRUPT = windows\system32\config\system. You can solve this problem by trying to repair windows.

Can anything just go wrong in 2 minutes? Is windows Xp so unreliable??????

Can anyone give me tutorial on how to really repair this windows. I checked in there but couldnt.

I have winXP professional.

Thanks

I had this problem a while ago and this fixed it for me.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307545

Basically, boot to dos prompt (or recovery console if available) and make backups of the following files:-
c:\windows\system32\config\system (to c:\windows\tmp\system.bak)
c:\windows\system32\config\software (to c:\windows\tmp\software.bak)
c:\windows\system32\config\sam (to c:\windows\tmp\sam.bak)
c:\windows\system32\config\security (to c:\windows\tmp\security.bak)
c:\windows\system32\config\default (to c:\windows\tmp\default.bak)

then delete the above files (not the backups!)
then copy the above files in c:\windows\repair to the c:\windows\system32\config directory

This is assuming that windows is installed into c:\windows, so adjust as required!

restart your computer

That worked for me without having to play around with the registry.
Hope it works for you, let me know.

Download and create a set of boot disks from http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310994...duct=winxp

Then boot using the disks and follow the instructions previously posted.

When xp doesnt boot up and tells you that "following file is mising or corrupt" just put your winxp cd in, reboot, startup recovery consile and type chkdsk. This will start scandisk and after checking your drive and fixing errors you reboot and evrything should be fine. By the way try typing help in the recovery console for more commands if you want to.

After the XP licencing agreement, I do not get anything that has R as repair in it. I get the message that set up wll install in the selected folder. Nothing like repairs show after the F8 agreement.

i'm having the same problem, but when i start the recovery console, it shows a blue screen that says there is some registry problem and windows is shutting down to prevent damage to the computer, is there anyway i can simply open up a console and do it manually?

Here's an idea, do a repair install.

Put in your windows CD, go to install, NOT repair. after the license agreement, then go to repair. This should reinstall all of the windows files, but keep your settings. It is definitely there, and there's no reason this shouldnt work.

DublinGunner, your solution worked for me! It took a while, but it worked. You have to reactivate Windows if you do this. All of my applications and files remained.

My new computer has the "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
windows\system32\config\system" problem too.
I tried to run the install disc to repair but it does not give me the press "r" option when it gets to the screen where it says it is on C/ I have read that I should not use the other option it DID offer to reintall it over the installation i already have..
Any ideas?
thanks in advance (I am totally computer illiterate so please be gentle with me :-) )

Hey Andy,

Your solution was just awesome.. I fixed the problem in 5 minutes using that copy/delete/paste technique ;)

Thanks,
Anupam

I got the same error and tried to fix the issue. I can get to the recovery screen prompt but then when I try and look for windows directory or even listing of all the files in c:\ I get an error: " The path or file specified is not valid." If I try to create a directory (i.e. md tmp) I get an error: "Access is denied."
It seems that there are no files on the hard drive???

Please help...

you should provide your admin password first when asked in the recovery panel.

Is it asking for the password or not?

Can someone help me out? i have a small Dell PP39S with an Intel Atom Processor. And i had windows xp pro installed. The problem with all the solutions ive seen is that they include some sort of disk or cd-rom. Unfortunately this laptop has none of those. Only a Usb port. i have tried putting the Windows Xp Pro installation folder in the usb and tried to boot with it but the laptop doesnt find any operating systems. Does anyone know if there is any usb booting method plus how to repair the missing/ corrupt file thing? (keep in mind, that i have no cd-rom or floppy drive, only usb...) Thanks
