Hello,

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7 and everything is working fine. My question is regarding any possible future difficulties I may have. My laptop that I upgraded to Windows 10 on, came with Windows 7 originally.

If for some reason down the road I needed to do a clean install of Windows 10, would my Windows 7 product key still work for it even if it was past the 1 year free upgrade? If this question is confusing, please ask me to clarify. Thanks

As per my knowledge, you cannot do a clean install with the same product key. You need to buy another license.

Better you make a note of the product ID and the last four letters of your product key which is available on Settings and update page.

When you contact Microsoft and provide them with a product ID there is a chance that you might get the product key.

One of my friend contacted a Windows forum for the same and they said that until the PC is available for updates, the Blue screen of death is impossible.

But I have a big doubt on this claim though.

You most certainly can do a clean install. As long as you didn't change motherboards, you are fine. No need to get another Win 7 key.

The product key is stored on Microsoft servers, and is based on your motherboard properties; therefore, you must have an internet connection when doing the clean install.

The new Win 10 product keys can NOT be moved from computer to computer. This includes if you motherboard gets replaced.

I have two laptops, and one tablet all with Win 10 on them. I have clean installed them just fine.

Per the previous response: "Better you make a note of the product ID and the last four letters of your product key which is available on Settings and update page."

The info they say you must make not of, will do you ABSOLUTELY NO good.

The moment you upgrade to WIN 10, a persons WIN 7, 8, or 8.1 key is automatically converted to a Win 10 key.

You can read about this... it's all over the internet.

As per the latest update from my friend, all the hardware info of your PC is stored on Microsoft servers. If in case the OS fails to boot up and you need to do a clean install, just download windows 10 on a new media such as pen drive or a DVD disc and then install the disc on the PC drive and load the OS. This can be done by windows 10 media creation tool from Microsoft.

Then say you are upgrading the PC it will load the OS as usual without any key.
As all the hardware components are registered on the MS server, as soon as your PC connects to internet all the registration details related to your PC will be updated on the system. If not, you can go to the activation tool and ask the PC to activate its OS copy.

It will take around 15 minutes. But the work will be done.
