Is it possible to install an os on a backup hard drive with extra space? I have a 1tb drive with over half the space free. I would like to know if it were possible partition that drive so I could install windows 7 and run it without losing the files already on the drive.

Separate question about partitioning; will a 250gb partion for the os on a 1 tb drive protect the data on the other half in case something happens to the OS, if it crashes or becomes inaccessible?

Thanks, sorry for the noob questions but my hdd failed and I'm having to do this off a backup laptop with limited battery.

Ofcourse it is. That's how most people back up.

I would recommend checking out some Youtube tutorials. There are some good ones. Good luck :)
