please help me, i am so frustrated with this pc.

my start menu/taskbar has frozen and wont let me unlock it. I can run programmes which are on my desktop ok but cant access anything on the task bar or anything that runs from the start menu, which means i cant even switch the thing off properly.

I have tried opening the taskbar/start menu icon in my computer but it wont even let me do that, when i click on it i get the egg timer thingy for about 2 secs then it just disapears.

The task bar is still there, I can see it, but cant do anything with it.

I am running xp pro.

Any ideas on what i should do next

Thanks

I used to have this problem on my old system, (Windows ME.) I finally found out that there was all kinds of adware and spyware running in the background slowing things down and even freezing the whole system. Adware and spyware, that is software installed on your PC without permission from websites and programs. You often get this kind-of stuff from things like KaZaa, WinMX, and program download off the web.

I would recommend you go to http://www.lavasoftusa.com - to get Adaware. This program will search your PC for adware and will destory. You may also want to run a virus scan as they viruses could also be clogging your system. Let me know how it goes.

thanks for that, i had already run a virus programme and found some trojans? and got rid of them and had run spybot search and destroy.

I have just run the ad aware programme which found some stuff, ?what, and got rid of them but i still cant get the task bar to work or access the start menu.

Everything on the desktop seems to be running fine and everything in the control panel except the start menu/task bar icon will open.

I am confident there are no viruses left but have no idea how to get the task bar to work again.

It seems to begin opening okay but then somewhere during startup it just freezes.

There was a problem with my task manager which did not give me any tabs at the top just a blank box but that is fixed (dont know how) so at least i can restart/switch off properly now .

Any more ideas on what i could do would be greatly appreciated.

As you can see i dont know too much about the internal workings of my pc so please put it simply.

thanks
