Hi,
I have Windows ME and a 'factory' installed Samsung DVD-ROM model SD-612, my DVD player worked fine for the 1st couple of years I owned it, but last week when I tried it (keeping in mind I haven't used it for a good, solid year), it did not work, however, I was able to play a music cd through my DVD player which, is not abnormal. Is there a way I can test my DVD-ROM player?

or repair it?

OEM DVD drives are known to be s**t. I used to have a drive in my OEM system that was so bad nothing could be found about it on the Internet. It's like the company made one model and discontinued it! I would recommend you check for device conflicts. I would also try to repair or reinstall the drivers. If all else fails I would remove the device from my system in the device manager and reboot the system, letting the OS redetect and install it. Best of luck.

Also because it’s been standing and not doing anything thing, if you are good at pulling things to bits, then I would strip it down and clean the lens with Isopropyl alcohol, be very careful you do not need pressure just dip a cotton bud in Isopropyl alcohol squeezes the bud in-between tissue paper the lightly clean the lens do not put presser on the lens.
If this is beyond your limits then get a disk cleaner

No! Do not clean it like that! I recommed you buy a lense cleaning kit. It will probably keep you from wrecking your drive.

Yeah I saw that but I still think that it is dangerous. You should never touch the lens with any materials. Especially such a powerful cleaner. It could permanetly damage it. Have you had this work for you before? Because to me it sounds like a good way to make a paperweight.

Yes I have cleaned many, cd-rom’s cd-rw dvd-rom’s playstations, more then I can remember, Isopropyl alcohol dose not leave any residue like other cleaners do.

The difficulty is opening the thing to clean it. I still have a Yamaha SCSI 2x2x6 from 1998 that still works, and have had to clean this a few times, I know it’s not fast but I don’t have the heart to get rid, it never let me down

ok, I used my devide manager to delete the drive.

then I used my recovery disk to re-install it, same problem.

I think it needs a cleaning, we will try this later today or tomorrow.

I have the same DVD drive and had the same problems before. Gave it a good clean with a disk lens cleaner kit and it worked fine.
