Howdy

Does anybody have the Gigabyte GA-7VAXP motherboard?

If you do, have you had any problems with this board? I.e. Similar to GA-7VRX(P) as listed endlessly in this forum...

Thanks guys.

Yea, I have one, and I love it. It has a perfect combination between overclocking features and onboard features. Just make sure that if you do get one to get the rev. 2.0 board, because the 1.0 and 1.1 had some quirks that were worked out in the 2.0, besides that the 2.0 has overheat shutoff protection and on die temperature monitoring, which the early versions didn't have.

Good Luck,
John-Paul

i have a rev 1.1, seems to work alright, but i can't get any devices to use dma anything.
during boot-up, at the status screen just before windows starts to load, all my drives are listed as using pio 4, that's awful!
i'm running:
XP 2000+
1GB PC2700
DVD-r 2nd Master
DVD 2nd Slave
Maxtor 20GB 7200 ATA133 1st Master
Aopen 40x Burner 1st Slave
i think that's about all that's relevant, any ideas?
already checked out everything i could think of in the bios
all these drives are on 80 conducter cables and have shown up as
ata66 devices on other boards.
i just can't figure it out.
please advise whether i should just send the board back for a 2.0 or whether this is maybe fixable.
thanks

i have got this board and a stick of 512 mb 400 mhz kingmax ram which, though set up in the bios correctly, is only benchmarking at around 2100 mb bandwidth in sandra 2002, less that ddr333,

any help please

I recently bought a Gigabyte GA-7VAXP too and seem to be having a lot of problems
my system:
AMD athlon XP 2200+
corsair pc3200 512 MB memory
ATI radeon 9700 pro

I have a rev 1.0, which I heard has a lot of non bios-related problems and I heard the rev 1.1 is a lot better. I haven't found anything about a rev. 2.0 of this board, though I've looked hard for it. I thing that is a mistake with the GA-7vRxp rev 2.0. About problems with pc3200 memory. Mine is running at 333Mhz now, because 400Mhz modules seem to have some compatibility problems. running @ 333Mhz seems to ad about 400 points to my 3dfx score, compared to a 400Mhz setting. Ah well, I'm pretty disappointed by this mainbord I must say and Gigabyte support sucks very badly, so if the s**t with this M/B and gigabyte isn't resolved quickly I'm definitly putting it in the trash. Looking for an MSI KT4 bord now, which seems to be alot better

The PIO4 mode is selected by default, because you first need to enter the advanced BIOS settings menu, which is accessible by first entering the normal BIOS and then pressing "CTRL+F1". This will then add some more menus to the list of available menus, and one of these contains the settings to change to the appropriate UDMA mode for your ATA, ATAPI device(s).

The "CTRL+F1" setting is also documented in the board's manual on page 27 if you want to reference it. :-)

BTW, the GA-7VAXP is not such a bad board, because it's basically the only board that offers reasonable support for DDR400 memory, as you can see by going to the following review site:

I've got one and it locks up with my XP2200 unless I under-clock it by setting the fsb (using the dip switches) at 100mhz. If I have it at 133 it detects the cpu and gets past post but then it just locks up. I've tried both F5 and a sneaked F6 bios and neither of them fixed the problem. Any ideas?

My system:
Gigabtyte 7VAXP
Athlon XP 2200
512 megs PC2700 Ram
one 80gb Samsung HD
one 20gb Western digital HD

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I don't believe so, I think only the 2800 and 2700 will be. Eventually it'll work it's way back but I'd be quite suprised if this chip had a 166mhz bus. (Another reason I think it's got the regular 133 is because it's detected as the right chip and has the right speed listed when I run it at 133.) Also, I forgot to mention two things yesterday:
Board rev: 1.0
OS: Windows2000
thanks!

sorry about that

the 2200 is a 133 fsb although it is the thoroughbred core

is the thermal protection kicking in?

Nope, It stays between 50 and 62 Celsius (Thermal shutdown is 102 celsius.) It just stops working. It does it with boot disks too so I know it's not just windows.

I am having huge problems.

I have a gigabyte ga-7vaxp motherboard, with an athlon xp 2200 chip and ddr 400 ram, clocked down to 333 (so it works!). The ram is tested the chip is tested they are fine.

I also have an HIS excalibur radeon 9700 pro video card.
I am using windows xp, and when i play any game the computer crashes.

THe video card works on other motherboards, these were 333 motherboards however. Please help me.

If you have any info please contact me on akatsika@bigpond.net.au

Did you guys check your Power Supplies?
I don't have any problems with the board on XP 2000 and have 400W AOpen PSU powering the system.
As for the heating problem, I also had my temp around 53 - 56 celsius, but I just took another cpu hsf, unscrewed the fan part and connected it to the system fan connector, then placed it to the side (next to RAM) of the huge Coolermaster HSF. My temperature dropped down to 45-49 celsius.
I even had the system running the whole weekend to test if the temp will go up again, but the highest it got was 49 degrees, and it's in summer.
Use a temp monitoring program like Speedfan or MBM 5 to check your temperatures in windows.

>> Re: Anyone got a Gigabyte GA-7VAXP?
I just got a brand new case with a new 350 watt power supply, and I don't think I mentioned what happened with my 1.4 so I'm going to relate my whole Gigabyte 7VAXP story.

there I was with a 1.4 T-Bird processor, happy as could be with an ECS board. I upgraded to a newer ECS board (K7S5A) for the DDR support. The board would restart itself frequently unless I under-clocked my chip. A few months passed and I was sick of running my 1.4 at 1.0 so I decided a new board was in order. I saw all the great reviews of the 7VAXP and bought one, everything worked beautifully, I reccomended it to a friend. He got his and it didn't work with his 1800 so I stuck my 1.4 in his 1.1 rev board to see if it worked. It did long enough for me to install windows and boot it a few times. Then, it fried my processor. I'd recently completed a computer website in exchange for some parts, I was planning on waiting for the 2800 but decided I'd rather have a working computer than not. So, I got this 2200 and this is where I am. The result of all of this is that I have very mixed feelings about this board. Not many people seem to have problems with it and it's gotten great reviews, but it fried my processor and the one I just got doesn't work with it. That's my story.

Can anyone help? I was wondering if anyone found a solution to the problem of the computer randomly crashing while in anything graphic intensive.

I have the GA7VAXP, 512 PC2700 Ram, PNY GEForce4 TI4400 128Mb card, Audigy MP3+ Sound and am using Windows XP. I have a 420watt power supply powering the whole rig.

Anytime I'm in a game the computer randomly restarts itself. The system has been very unstable and I'm pretty much unable to play any games on it (and this is why I put it together).....

IF anyone has any help or know why the system is doing this please respond!!!

Thanks in advance,
Lindle

I bought GA-7VAXP two weeks ago and I think that board is fantastic.
I have Athlon 2000+XP, 512 mb DDR400 KingMax memory which works as DDR 333 because when I adjust it to 400 MHz computer crashes from time to time. Processor temp. is around 52-54 degrees.

I almost forgot to mention: My ram is 512MB Samsung DDR333, and my proc and system temp hover in the 35c - 39c range. I also have the themaltake mem cooling spreaders on my ram chip.

Thanks again,
Lindle

Just get enough knowledge on how to operate the board before you complain about it. That's what I did and I got all the recommended AMD stuff to support the baord and processor. I would seriously NOT recommend an AMD computer for any newbie!

Unfortunately it seems that everyone and his/her grandma wants to own a powerfull AMD machine and want their previous Intel experience to help them out. AMD does run much hotter than Intel processors and also don't have all the thermal advantages of an Intel chip, but it outperforms a similar clocked Intel proccessor any day purely because it's more pitched towards "Power Users", eg. people who try and research their hardware first before they attempt any purchase and who also understand how to fix any problems, should these arise.

It seems that people now just simply blame the board for all thier little shortcomings (not reading up on the possible dangers of owning an AMD machine, etc...). A fried processor is suddenly immediately the motherboard's fault....LOL. Ever thought of checking that your temperature is OK? It is almost NEVER a hardware component's fault if something goes terribly wrong, but in most cases it's the IDIOT sitting in from of the computer, who is too busy playing the latest PC game. Tsk, tsk, tsk....
