You can probably reset the bios by taking out the battery for a few minutes (2-5). This will not hurt anything. I don't know if the jumper short will work and if it hurts anything or not.

<You can probably reset the bios> I meant the CMOS.

I have the same problem with my board . I have recently reinstalled windows to try and fix the problem but nothing helps i have been a computer tech for 8 years now and i cant work the problem out i have tried everything and it all seems to come down to the motherboard.
I think the stupidest mistake i made was i had a vrxp and swaped it for a vaxp and similar problems occur . I get into windows and it refuses to install things such as drivers and software it will just come up with a windows xp error and shut it down or it will just reboot itself .
I have pc2100
2100+ Ga-Vaxp (of course)
Hercules 8500le 128meg
Hercules Gametheater 6.1
Temps are running at about 42-48 no higher
and i have updated to the new bios i think its f7 and nothing helps.
Does anyone have any ideas ?

PS: Reseting the bios can also be done by unpluging your power of course and take the battery out and use something metal to cross the two prongs where the battry mounts just touch them together then put the battery back in and it should be fine .

If you mean you're having the same problem I'm having (can't run it at right speed) I actually wound up fixing it by applying thermal paste. =| I think that this fix is really odd because it wasn't running hot before the paste, but it worked so if you haven't applied any paste then I'd try that. (I don't normally bother with paste, but when my cpu was fried it imprinted itself on my copper heatsink and I figured the paste would fill in the gaps.)

Im running my athlon2200+ on this Gigabyte GA-7VAXP mobo. Currently the SW1 switch is set to 133mhz.
What will happen if I switch the SW1 switch to 166mhz? Would there be any preformance increases and would that increase the temp of my comp?

I dont have a overheating problem and i dont think its related to the graphics card at the moment because i cant even get half way through installing a game without it saying it has a crc error but when i hit retry it will get a little further eachtime so i dont know wether there is a problem with the ata on the board or something .

Insane: That'd drastically overclock your cpu, I wouldn't reccomend it.

Nathan: Have you tried a different cd-rom?

lol thats what I thought. If I did switch it to 166mhz it would jump it up from a 1.8ghzcpu to a 2.4ghz right? Or something like that. lol

Well I have another question. I have a stick of 256mb pc2100 and I want to get more ram. Im planning on buying a stick of 512mb pc2100.

ORRR, should I upgrade to 512mb PC2700 and ditch the pc2100?
Would that be a worthwhile upgrade?

Or should I buy more pc2100 so ill have a total of over 700mb's of ram?

I would go for the 2700 because it's much, much faster. I'm currently using 512megs of PC2700 and I can run JKII with textures set to "highest" Wheras before It'd crawl at this setting. (When I was running 512mb of PC133. My friend has 256mb of 2100 and it crawled on his too)

AMD AthlonXP 2200+
Tubolink 420W Switching PS
4X 40GB IBM Deskstar 7200 IDE HD
Of course GA-7VAXP Mainboard
OS: Redhat Linux

Okay, I had the same problem that a lot of people seemed to be listing here with the 2x00+ models: the bios reported as a 1500+ and ran at 1.3 ghz. I updated the bios: no help. I ran multiple benchmarking samplers, all reporting that the processor was running at the reported speed. I followed Ryan's advise above: The bios would not post at 166mhz, but when I set it to 133mhz, not only did it post, but it reported 2200+ processor, as do the benchmarking samples. Cool? Well I think so. It's all right there on page 9 of the manual.

Just got all the following gear Dec 2, and began XP Prof configuration that night.

7VAXP
2700XP
512MB Kingmax PC3200
ATi 8500 128MB

Had problems installing XP everytime (BSOD, IRQ_NOT_GREATER_THAN, ntfs.sys, etc.) until I disabled Top Performance and enabled Spread Spectrum in BIOS. RAM does not report as DDR400 (Only 333) but system is now rock solid. Had a problem where system would not soft reboot until I applied the F9 BIOS Update and made the changes stated above. Everything is great now!!

Ok, someone else had this issue but I did not see an answer so......

AMD 2000+
Corsair DDR333 CL2
Volcano 7+ HS
GeForce4 Ti4200

I just got this board new. After a couple issues I finally got the board to reliable recognize the CPU (I had to set the CK_RATIO switch manually as the auto setting would freeze the PC.

The computer now POSTs fine and detects all my drives but at the point where it should display the system summary and then continue to boot, I get a blinking cursor in the upper left corner and then nothing else happens. CPU temp is 49C and system temp is 29C. It will not boot to any device.

Update!

Working!!!! Had to enter CTRL+F1 for advanced and set the RAM to Auto.

It defaulted to CL2.5

Still bluescreens if I plug a drive in to the Promise controller set to either raid or ATA

And some games are crashing

Yeah, I got the GA-7VRXP Rev. 1.1 and it is working perfect. I have just flashed my BIOS to F12 last night. I played the UT2003, DFTFD, MOHAA after flashing and didn't noticed anything that gets my attention.

GA-7VRXP rev. 1.1
XP 2000+ not OC
512MB Kingston Value RAM PC2100
Asus GeForce 3 V8200 Deluxe
Detonator 41.09 Driver
VIA 4.43 Driver
Game Theater XP
Logitech Speakers
Windows XP Pro SP1

Sisoft Sandra 2003 Memory Bandwith: 2049
PCMark 2001 SE Score: 7465

Seeing a lot of other people in the same predicament as myself, I might as well post my story (abridged):

Currently have

7VAXP (what else!)
60GB W.D. 7200RPM w/8MB buffer
512MB stick of OCSystem PC3200 RAM
Radeon 7500
Athlon XP 2200+

Lord knows I have spent countless hours attempting to install WinXP, and I would keep running into BSOD's, bad_pool_call errors, you name it, I've hit it. I finally got a barely-alive copy of XP installed and it's not doing so hot... constantly running into crashes (no BSoD's yet, knock on wood), and I'm _thinking_ I have a bad stick of RAM. I've noticed that I've encountered lots of problems downloading programs, especially XP_SP1... I tried the admin download like 5 times, and it would always show up as "corrupted" when attempting to run. This happened with other larger downloads as well...

Right now I _think_ I'm running the RAM at 333MHz, spread spectrum disabled, and just regular FSB @ 133. I've made so many changes and tweaks, I can't ever remember what's the last configuration I left it at. It's silly. I don't expect anyone to know exactly what's wrong, but I just thought I would share my pain with everyone else :-\

Neil: The corruption of large downloads is more likely a network error. If your connection is too unstable or if you loose too many packets the file will get messed up. If the download site provides the CRC number you could compare that to yours and know for sure if the file is messed up. (I know theres a command to check the crc but I can't for the life of me remember what it is) If the site doesn't have the crc you can also compare the size of the file to the bit. I don't know what a BOSD (or BSOD) error is but if when things crash you get a memory address error it could be the ram. (A memory address error should have a number like 0x0069F or something.)

xp 1800+ (t-bred)
512 of corsair 3200 xms cas 2
radeon 9000 pro (128meg) using dual 21" trinitrons.

Some problems but nearly as bad as many above. The board is actually rock solid and overclocks itself slightly when set to top performance mode, cas 2 ddr 400 it reads a fsb of 134. These are the problems am am having with the board and any help would be greatly appreciated. If you have any in depth information to share please feel free to contact me at bremerton@mail.com

1. AUDIO
I'm using the coaxial SPDIF out and do not hear any system sounds at all. The only way i can hear any sort of windows based sounds (start up/shut down, open close windows, error ect) is if i also use the stereo mini jacks. The SPDIF works great for music and movies but having to use the mini jacks for windows sounds really sucks. Especially when there is a slight hiccup in every sound using the mini jacks. Ive tried 3 windows XP installs (for various reasons) and all have had the same hiccup in the system sounds when using the on-board audio. Anyone get the SPDIF to play system sounds, or find a cure for the system sound hiccups using the stereo mini jacks?

2 Overclocking. (you did know t-bred's come factory unlocked on these kt400 boards right?)

Ok I'm having problems getting the board to boot and post in 166 FSB mode. I can run solid at 11.5x165 (1.897GHz from 1.53ghz) but as soon as i flip the dip switch to 166 i can get past post once (or into the cmos) then it instantly locks after post and requires a battery out clear of the cmos. I know the problem isn't the ram as it OC's past its rated 3200 specs easy, it shouldn't be a PCI or AGP issues because once the DIP switch is set at 166 they revert back to 33/66. Someone above posted reaching 170's FSB I'd sure like to know how they did it. The best i can push my 1800 stable is 12.5x155 or 1.936ghz. Ive tried lowering the multi to as low as 8x and trying to boot at FSB 166 and get the same results, locks up after first post. Any suggestions, I'm really trying to get 2ghz from my $69 chip ;) I'm sure i could with another brand of board without these stupid DIP switches...why not all bios settings? Another way to reach my goal would be to figure out how to get a multiplier past 12.5 on this board. The manual gives DIP switch pattern for >12.5 but its only works at 12.5 and i cant figure out how to get it any higher (i could reach my goal with say 14x145) but i think the 12.5x is the limitation on the board, please prove me wrong.

Another problem i ran into was using ATI's dual display. If i use the latest 4/1 VIA chipset update every time i maximize a window to the second monitor it would freeze, requiring a soft reset. If i use the 4 in 1 update that came ont he CD with the board no problems. Maybe that might help someone out there.

I should have said that i get the audio problems even if i run the board at its rated (or below) specs and the audio issue isnt due to my OC.

I had all same problems wit this board lock ups restarts irq les or not equal you name it .... the board is like person you hav to dress it up appropiatly ....this board do not like ATI cards any of them it needs a VIA newst drivers and temp patch G-Force 4400Ti Or abbove Ctrl+F1 at setup BIOS , to start machine set bios to load Fail proof mode disable all additional hardware becides CD, HD, FD, if you running ATA/Raid 133 chip installing XP use F6 insall Promise driver (not Beta) also board likes a lot of RAM I have 1GB of Samsung PC3200 you can use PC2100 or PC2700 woks with any of this Just in BIOS leave it on AUTO setting. when you boot up with this setup start enabling rest of hardware do not change BIOS settings when all needed hardware loaded whit posibly newest drivers (very important for AC97 Audio chip becuase it affecs DX settings Whitch in our case makes all those problems) Test all devices in device manager how they are working and if everithing OK start tweaking BIOS load with Optimised Settings Use Ctrl+F1 to fine toone your PC do not use TOP PERFORMANCE enabled it makes system more unstable >>>>
Good luck everybody

In response to the message above about corrupted large downloads... I have had the same problem

Currently running: GA-7VAXP,
40gb Maxtor
2.2 Gig Athlon
512 RAM pc133 RAM
GEFORCE 4 MX420

I have had all the problems above.... In Win XP the crashes get the message IRQ_NOT_LESS_THAN or whatever it is. In 2k, the system reboots. Have yet to try in 98, although getting desperate enough to return to it :).

So far have tried turning off spread-spectrum, seemed to improve things, but not altogether. (Currently using a full-scale XEmacs install to test)

Any suggestions on what i could try to fix this would be very warmly received, My hair is starting to look a bit clumpy from all the lumps Ive torn out of it.

Richard
