hey,

I have a GA-7VAX, but I think its similiar to the GA-7AX. anyways, I just built my computer and it is the most gayest thing on the face of the
earth!!Heres the deal; When i start up my computer I enter the bios set the cd-rom drive as first boot. Then I insert windows XP pro in the cd-rom drive, I exit out of the bios, the computer restarts. (everything is going smoothly for now) after this it goes to the windows XP setup. It installs a couple of stuff into my hardrive. Then it tells me I have more memory, and do I want to use my maxium memory. sure why not, so I use my max memory. After It finishes formatting my hardrive the computer restarts. then it says, "booting from cd-rom drive, push any key to continue" I push a key and it goes crazy, here are the errors I get:

1. The computer just shuts off
2. It has some error stateing 00004 trap exception and some numbers and letterings
3. If am lucky it goes to the windows XP menu and say, "cannot continue out of memory"
4. one time, it went to an grey screen with letters going down (Kinda like the Matrix)

First I thought it was the hardrive, but it wasen't. I used some another hardrive and it still messes up .What is it?? what is the problem?? Motherboard, processor, ddr ram, hardrive, the A drive, the cd-rom drive, the freakin IDE cables?!?!? what is it. help please.<:(

Worthless computer specs:
gigabyte 7VAX motherboard
40X cd-rom drive
old A drive
Matrix 120 gigabytes ATA 133 ultra 7200 RPM
ddr ram memory 512 pc2700
AMD processor 2600 2.08ghz

I was thinking about upgrading to an XP3000+ processor. But I was wondering if once the new AMD processors come out will the GA-7vaxp be able to support them with a bios update? Or is the new chip going to be completely different and a new board will be needed to it?

Be careful with the XP3000+ there are now 2 versions, 333Mhz and 400Mhz. The GA-7VAXP only supports the 333Mhz version.

There may be a further release of XP series chips (unlikely) but this might be 400Mhz. The new AMD64 will require a totally different motherboard.

Many people, myself included have bought the XP2500 and just set it to XP3000 speed, though it depends on your board version, early boards only have settings up to x12.5, XP2800. Later boards have settings up to x18, XP3000 = x13

Where's Ray and his glorious XP2500 .... I'm betting his is the next post!

Johnny

The GA-7VA series has trouble with memory, make sure the BIOS is set to optimal and not performance.

Performance = crashes and Blue Screen

Thanks, That's all I needed to know.

Has the price of the XP3000+ gone done over the last couple days. I could've sworn that it was much higher then I'm seeing now.

thanks for the help ant
but,

i still have memory problem i think. The problem is the mother board is not detecting the right cpu i have. It show i have 1667mhz which is 2000+ 266 bus side. I really have is 2600+ 333 bus side. how do i change to the right setting? Cause i have ddr ram that is 333 bus, but if its going 2000+ 266 bus side. It will mess up right?

Hey all, I've been trying to overclock my GA-7VAXP mobo. I've been able to overclock it a little (so far upto a XP 2200 - stable) with the following additional hardware:

- AMD Athlon XP 2100+ Palomino Core
- 256 DDR PC2100 RAM
- 32 MB Nvidia GeForce MX 200
- 40 GB Western Digital HD
- 20 GB Seagate
- Win XP Pro SP 1

To get my processor to XP 2200, I set the System clock to 141 Mhz and the clock multiplier to >=12.5. I also set the special command in the Bios to "Fast".

Does anyone have a similar setup and been able to get it to run faster?

Processor: Athlon XP 2100+ (Palomino)
Motherboard: GA-7VAXP (Revision 1.1)
Memory: Micron's Crucial 512MB PC3200
Video: ATI Radeon 9600 AIW - 128 MB DDR
PSU: 400W Hercules
HardDisks: Western Digital 40GB + 8MB Cache, Seagate 20GB
Operating System: W

Try lowering your multiplier to 10x and raising your FSB via the dip switches to 166. This will give you a starting speed of 1660mhz vs your normal speed of 1700mhz. At this point you can raise the FSB until it becomes un-stable an then back off a notch. Then, raise your multiplier until the unstable point and back off again. If you are feeling daring, you can up the CPU voltage a 'small' amount, but watch the heat as it goes up very quickly. Truth is that you need very good cooling to OC the pally. Proceed slowly, test frequently and good luck.

Johnny,

Provided you have got 333MHz PC2700 memory you can just set the CPU FSB to 166Mhz. The board clock doubles that to 333Mhz. You'll find the memory then defaults to 333Mhz as well.

If you have the early board, 2 dips near the raid and 5 by the CPU you need to set the 2 dips to 166Mhz, there is a legend next to them.

If you have the later board, 1 dip by the raid and 6 dips by the CPU it should auto detect 166Mhz when the single dip is set to 133/166 Auto detect. Again the legend is next to the single switch

You'll run into problems if the single/double dip by the raid is set incorrectly.

If you have the rare 266Mhz XP2600 the make sure you have the dips next to the CPU set to >=12.5x or Auto.

PC2700 (333) memory should run fine at PC2100 (266) speed, If anything you can use tighter timings as the memory would respond faster.

Ali,

The Palamio doesn't overclock well. The XP2100 was the top model and is pretty much on the limit so your overclock is pretty good. The multiplier is locked on that CPU, AMD cut circuits on the CPU so it will only run at the default multiplier.

The later T-breds have an additional metal layer in the CPU core and are made on a smaller fabrication process so are capable of running much faster and overclock much better.

Thanks ant for the info. However, would increasing the voltage on the processor be of any help? I'm not going to do this but I was just curious about it.

Click this link to view a list of all the supported processors. The GA-7VAXP (including the Ultra version) do indeed support the Athlon XP 2800 chip.

I got a GA-7AXP. Machine been going strong for quite a while. Now when I go and shut it down the darn thing just reboots. Then you wont have all the drives loaded. Right now I have a 30gig, 80gig hardrives on ide1. I put Pioneer DVDR AO3 master ide 2, sony dvdrom slave ide2. Any ideas? I have updated bios numerous times, all latest vid drivers, chipset drivers etc. I am thinking maybe its my pwr supply its a 400watt future power.

I have been reading this thread and must confess I am surprised reading about all these problems, because I have not had the first problem with this mb and think it is great, and all the reviews seem to reflect this also. I am not an extreme gamer, but consider myself a power user and frequently multitask graphics programs and process large graphics and audio files. I have been building PC's for about 9 years and this is about the 8th one since the first 486 I built, and I consider it to be the best mb I have owned. When I first built this box I had a FIC mb which was a total piece of S*$t and nothing but trouble. I swapped it for this board and it has been running great ever since. The board has NEVER spontaneously rebooted in 6 months of daily use not including a couple of vacations when I was gone for a few days and always boots flawlessly every time with Win2k pro with sp3. If I notice any programs misbehaving ( a rare occurance), or performance deteriorating, I just reboot the system to refresh RAM that had not been freed up, usually about every 2 or 3 days on average. I have noticed that my 512 mb stick of Crucial memory (DDR 2100) is not quite as reliable as my 256 mb of Corsair memory, but it has only caused a problem one time that caused me to lose 20 minutes of work. Spend the money on quality RAM I say.
I normally use the auto settings for nearly everything in Bios or on the board related to CPU multiplier, bus speed, voltage etc, but have used the Easy Tune multiplier to overclock my system with no problem for a day or two at a time unless I tried to go with extreme settings near the top of the scale. I dare say that a lot of you out there would have less problems if you just quit trying to tweak every damn thing to its top speed and performance, and bought the right processor in the first place and read the manual a little more closely--spend the money to buy the right hardware for the board and quit being so cheap-flame suit on- LOL. The manual has a disclaimer that inappropriate settings can damage hardware or cause your system to become unstable. If you want to overclock buy a board that has better overclocking capabilities in the Bios-enough said about that.
I'm not trying to defend Gigabyte's tech support because I have no experience with that, not having any problems, but I can relate to you and empathize from experience with other PC products. My CPU normally runs at about 48-50C without a problem. I do have two extra fans to cool the case, one blowing air in at the top and the other blowing out of the back. I use a Speeze CPU cooler with thermal paste spread very thin on the die only and it runs at over 5000 rpm's. Don't skimp on your CPU fan. Make only a couple of changes in the Bios at a time and then try to boot. I am sure there must be a way to clear CMOS and reboot but I have never had to. The AC97 sound has always worked well except for thumping a little on the initial boot up.
Hardware Configuration:
350 watt power supply
Athlon xp 2000+ (12.5x and 1.74v, runs at 1675Mhz)
WD 80GB 7200 rpm 8 mb hd ATA-100
768 mb ram (512 Crucial and 256 Corsair DDR 2100
Geoforce 4 Mx 440se 64 mb video
Sony 16x DVD-Rom
Yamaha cd-rw 10/16/40x
Speeze socket a/370 CPU cooler (normally runs at 5600 rpm)

Well Jeff nice post. I have to admit I messed with bios, overclocked my xp2400 to 2800settings ran a while etc. CPU never got over 114 deg. I have a solid copper slk800 with a 80mm deltafan which screams when you have the reastat turned down. I find that the machine works EXCELLENT RIGHT NOW other than when I shut down it goes off then flashes right back on. Its more an annoyance to me than anything. I will just let her keep flying untill something gives. Mother boards arent that expensive. I bought this board for the looks, and some of the features. I DO LIKE THE BOARD. Just hope I didnt damage it. I have reinstalled OS to no avail. So its either board or some other hardware.

To DJ DJ--your machine is flashing back on because of an incorrect setting in Power Mgmt. Setup. I had this same problem for a very short while and it was in fact an incorrect bios setting. Setting ACPI suspend type to s1\pos, usb device wake up disabled, and ac back to soft off should take care of the problem, I think.
