les,

there is an article at tomshardware that says the default swicth is set to 100fsb (i think)...search for it the author says thats the switch he changed......you should then get 166 fsb

Well Les, your info tells me that you are running a 166mhz (333) FSB, which is good. But, I can't figure out why Ctrl F1 isn't allowing a display of your detailed memory specs.

Past this point, it is possible to give the system a bump by setting 'Top Performance' in your bios, but this is not without risk as I am not sure if your memory can handle it. If the system became un-stable in TP, you would have to probably clear the CMOS (reset the bios) and load the Optimized defaults again.

I guess what I am saying, is that with your current configuration, it is best not to 'mess' with it as it is running stable. I suspect that the slow boot is either due to software or that Quick Post is not enabled in the bios, which it should be by default. I am a bit suspicious of you bios because of the inability to call up the advanced timings through Ctrl F1 - very strange. Anyway, that was my best shot Les and I am sorry I can't be of more assistance.

Regards,

Al

Yes, the S.M.A.R.T. program is a utility used to monitor the hard drive to anticipate a possible failure. You don't really need this function and it just takes up system resources and so is better left disabled.

Just as an aside, you may want to check that your HD is configured as the Primary Master on IDE 1. (ie. At the end of the cable on the first IDE slot)

Hey everyone, I now have another problem with my board. The on-board realtek LAN port gave out on me. Windows says its still operating normally, but cannot connect to the internet. I tried uninstalling the drivers, reinstalling the latest drivers and hoping for the best, but the same problem keeps coming up. I even tried using the cat5 cable on another machine and the cable worked fine. I think my mobo has gone haywire. I'm p**sed off at all the problems its giving me. Has anyone's mobo given the same trouble or has a possible solution? Thanks

Try checking your internet connection through explorer and if necessary, run the Wizard again. I could walk you through it, but I use 98se and not XP.

I tried that but it didn't work. Before, when it was working, I didn't have to do any of that. Windows picked up my cable modem internet connection and automatically set it up. I'm really thinking that my board is defective. The revision number on it is 1.1 and I got it in January of this year.

Well, it happens to the best of them Ali. I would try Gigabyte on for an RMA and see what they have to say. They are usually quite good about it.

Something must be really wrong with it because 3DMark2001 SE 's benchmark only gave me a score of around 2500. Other people's results were much higher. I have these system specs:

AMD ATHLON XP 2100+ PALOMINO
PNY 256 MB RAM DDR PC2100
ATI RADEON 7000 64MB DDR
WinXP Pro SP1

Is 2500 a decent score with these components? Or do you think something's amiss? Thanks

You can always do a 'compare' on Mad Onion's site, but yes, I think it's low. I get 6200 on an OC'd XP1700+.

Hi every1,
I ran 3DMark03 Professional Edition and it gave me a score of 1400. I have an illegitimate copy of this software so I am not able to check my result online on their website. Is this score decent? If not, is there something I may have done wrong? My current system is:

Athlon XP 2500+ Oc'd to 2.09Ghz
GA-7VAXP (bios F13)
Volcano 9
PNY GeForce 4 Ti4200 64MB
2 x 512MB Crucial PC2700
Antec True Power 480W Power Supply
Maxtor 80GB 7200RPM 8MB cache
Lite-On 52x24x52 CD-RW
Win XP

The reason why I am concerned is because Ali posted a reply about his test score from 3DMark2001 SE and his score was 2500. Is 3DMark03 Pro different from 3DMark2001 SE ??? Please any comments will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Ed

Oops, sorry Ed and Ali, I mixed 3D mark with PC mark. I was quoting my PC mark. (Too many late nights.) :)

Hi Les,

Well, if he isn't even getting to the POST screen, yet still hears a bios POST 'beep', odds are he has a major problem with his video card. In this case, he should try another vid card to see if he has any joy. Otherwise, he should clear his bios and swap his memory for a known good stick and try the system.

The problem with power surges is that any one of a number of items could be 'cooked', from the bios and/or vid card, to the CPU, chipset or hard drive. Usually you have to follow a process of elimination by trying a known good PSU, then vid card, then memory and finally a CPU. It is often frustrating and time consuming, but I don't know of any other way (other than a diagnostic card, which is very expensive). With any luck, it is something simple.

Yes Ed, the scores between 2001 and 2003 are much different - 2003 are a lot lower. That said, your score of 1400 sounds quite good. The TI4200 scores run from around 1300-1500 depending on the tweaks, so yours is pretty much crack on.

Hi Les,

For the Radeon 9800pro you should be seeing around 5600 for 3DMark 2003 and around 16,000 for the 2001 version. You can get the benchmark software here - http://www.futuremark.com/download/
