Hi,
I got the 9800 Pro and installed it in my desktop. Everything was doing fine until this afternoon. When I reboot the machine after a 10 hours continuously long run. My MOBO beep crazy in a loop and the screen displayed something like "You have not connected the power extension cable to your Radeon 9800 video card, please refer to the "Getting Started Guide" for proper hardware installation". I have checked all the connections, the card seat firmly on the MOBO and the power extension cable is install properly. I have a 300W Antec power supply that came with the case. The power output is 12V@15A and I connected 2 hard drives, CD-rom, and a floppy. Does anyone know what's wrong?

A continous beeping almost always has to do with one of the following:
1) Incorrectly installed RAM.
2) Incorrectly installed video card.
3) Damaged RAM.
4) Damaged video card.

Check to make sure the RAM is seated and okay and that the video card isn't damaged. If you swap out the 9800 Pro with something else, does the system boot?

Hi Michael,
After I let my desktop off for an hour or so, the desktop can bootup now without any warning. Any idea what was happening earlier. Is it the heat problem? Thanks

I have no idea, very weird. I guess it could be heat but that sure sounds weird. I would run some tests on your hardware and make sure everything is working okay. Best of luck.

the 9800 pro needs to be connected directly to the power supply
thats why its beeping to warn you of this
there is a power connection on the card
that is the same as on your hard drive and cd drive
this needs to be connected to to the power supply
if you have a free power connector hook it directly up to the card
if they are all used then you need an adapter like this
my card came with this adapter included

also have a look at this to see what im referring to

good luck

Hahahaha!!! if your had a long beep before and now it wont boot up anymore...then you toasted it.
Try booting system up with just correct seated video card (power connected) and just CPU. If still nothing no beeps no video then try with just mobo. No video or even CPU (if still no beeps) just boot the MOBO.
if it beeps install hardware one by one (Install, boot up, install boot up)

As I mentioned on the replay post above. After I remained my computer off for a while without touching anything, the system was up and running without any error. So, what was the problem? How can I test and trace it down what was going wrong of my hardware?

Steve,
2 things come to my mind as follows;

1) You should get a 350 to 450W power supply

2) What card did you have installed prior to the 9800 Pro upgrade.
Is this a new build or an upgrade as I stated above.

Did you remove the exisitng drivers in add/remove programs, shut down, install new card and reboot your system first while the card was fresh out of the box or again is this a new build?

It may be that your power supply is not providing enough power for the video card, motherboard and any other peripherals you may have installed.

Let us know how you ultimately make out and how and if you resolve your problem.

Good Luck and keep us posted on your progress.

Regards,
Jay

Jay,
I am thinking about may be my Antec 300W PSU does not provide enough power to the video card after the PSU run for a long period of time (e.g operates 10 hours+ continuously). However, I am still not sure about this and I'll test on it.
Back to your second question, this 9800 Pro is an upgrade for my previous Gigabyte Ati Rage 128 Pro OEM video card.
I reinstalled everything after I install my new Ati 9800 Pro.

Hey guys,
After a week or so of testing on my 9800Pro, I did not get any error message on bootup. I have no idea what was going on earlier. However, the problem should be my 300W PSU, not my video because I can play games like NFS Underground without any problem. So I guess my 300W PSU can just barely bootup all the components inside my PC.

yeah...power...

i made a point of upgrading my psu before getting my 9800 because of the power hungriness of it...i've known those with budget 550w psu's who had to go back to stock on their cpu/ram due to power probs...

that and 10 hours of heat can cause grief as well...might consider stripping the heatsink and redoing with arctic silver 3 just to make sure it's alright for paste...

Gray

I change my hardware so often I can hardly keep track anymore...

Currently X2 4800, 1 gig Redline, X850, Dfi Mobo, etc. which may or may not be current at time of posting...

I do Phase :D

I have the same problem with the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro ALL-IN-WONDER video card.

The only thing is that I have a Enermax 650W PSU powering it, it was the most powerful PSU on the market until that 1KW monster of a PSU came out a while back. Anyways, I doubt it is not getting enough power.

However, the card needing it's own dedicated connector is a possibility. I unhooked a few fans to give it a dedicated power line and it booted up again. However, it has booted many times without me changing that wiring.

Very weird problem with the constant beeps and the error message: "You have not connected the power extension cable to your Radeon 9800 video card".

BTW - Can you relink to the pages with that power connector that is recomended to fix this problem? The links are only to websites, not the actual product pages.

I had the "You have not connected your power extensuion cable ..." message today, but the solution was much simpler.

The power connector was firmly in place, and had not burnt out, BUT the heatsink on the 9800 Pro was loose. More in hope than anticipation, I tightened up the two retaining bolts/nuts, replaced the card and ... hey presto. Working graphics. :D

Presumably the card had finally overheated and this produced (for reasons that escape me) the error message.
