When I bought my pc, it ran like a beast. Now it takes 10 minutes to do anything. Yeah, ive tried the defrag and disk cleanup and all that. What radical measures can i take - apart from formatting - that will speed it up? Ive deleted as much of the third party crap and spyware that loads itself but it is still lurking in there somewhere, and surely it can't make that much difference. And besides, my 120Gb hard disk drive is only 20% full.

Do post specs as previous posts suggest. Also if you're running WinXP try a selective startup. Think back to when the problem began, and anything you may have added to your system that may have caused this slow start-up.

I think spyware or other background applications that may be running are likely to be the cause in this kind of case. Anyway, a couple thoughts:

You could get a spyware cleaner to help check and clean the system. Some virus checkers, like McAfee VirusScan Version 8 ($32 at Newegg) can detect spyware.

Do you run things like Kazaa? That can put a big drain on the system.

You should go into Control Panel, and go through the Add/Remove Programs applet. Get rid of things you don't need/want.

Pull up the task manager (ctrl-alt-del, task list). Sort by CPU usage, memory usage, etc. Are there any hogs in there? Or things that look questionable in general?

What does your system tray look like (bottom right corner)? How many icons are there (and what are they)? When the tray is four inches wide or more and full of icons, that is a problem.

You could probably be more specific about what exactly is slow. What about simply going into Microsoft Word and typing a note, for example? Or is only the Internet that is slow? What about boot speed?

Just reformat and save yourself ALOT of trouble. WinXP doesn't use bootdisks so download one, but it on a disk and use that to wipe your disk clean first. Then install WinXP. I reformat evertime I see real slow down. Just make sure to backup everything important.

It happened to me once and the problem was a background application that hogged 100% of the CPU usage.

Go into device manager and check that both of your hard drives are running in one of the DMA modes and not PIO mode.

Run -> msconfig -> startup tab : check to see if there are any programs that you don't want running at startup.. If you can't tell what a program is for look at the directory it's running from.
