I just built this new computer with an existing 98 OS on the original HD. So I just put all the old parts in the new case and started it. It loaded windows just fine, which surprised me. I really need to keep all the files and programs in tact. I dont know what else to do with this thing. I have started the upgrade from within windows and the computer starts analyzing. Once it starts, it gets about half-way and says it will finish in 65min. It just wont go past that mark. I have updated 98 completely and have used scandisk. I didn't do a thorough scan though. So anyone got any other ideas. Can I upgrade windows when booting from the CD. Like I said I dont want to FORMAT, thats a last resort!!

Thanks for the quick reply. I have tried that before and had problems but I will consider it. So the problem is that if I do that I will have to reinstall the OS instead of upgrading like I want to. I need to upgrade this like I said so hopefully I can. I let the setup continue and I'm at work right now. So when someone at my house gets up I'll have them check and see if the setup is still stuck.

I was thinking about using the /checkupgradeonly switch to see if the upgrade is hanging up on something or not. Supposedly then I can check the upgrade.txt file located in the %systemroot% directory and see which application it is hanging onto! Anyone think that it might possibly work if I were to do this?

When you put the disk in while your running 98 did you do a upgrade compatably test that will tell you what your gonna need to do for updating drivers or when you ran it did it say no conflicts?

Upgrades hardly ever work right ,better if you do a clean install of win. xp. Save your files to disk if you must. But do so and reformat and do a clean install ,this way you will be satisified with XP,if not then you will complain from here on out. Here is a link to go to ,copy or print it out so you can go by instructions. Good luck.
