HP makes good laptops and they are pretty affordable as well. I recommend you get their Athlon 64 model. It comes weak stock but for a few hundered you can customize it to be pretty darn powerful.

I've had an HP laptop for nearly 3 years now- I almost never turn it off, am online 24/7 with my cable modem... use the *hell* out of it, and it is still keeping me happy. In fact, I have a brand-spanking new 2.8 GHz machine, but use this (old Pentium 3) instead... (totally *not* for gaming, my uses are for web programming, email, internet, image manipulation, writing HTML, etc...)

.....Of course, it *is* an Intel

Just avoid Sony Vaios, HPs, Compaq etc..... Get a Dell. Pentiums are the winners in laptops

i would like to spend around £900 to £1000 for it. no more.
it'll be used for dvd's, music, net, casual gaming (note only casual nothing extreme!).
but i'll need good performance for digital/analogue electronics simulations.

MSI buys the laptops from people in taiwan and slef brands them like we do. ASUS builds the laptops, also known as an ODM. Not to be confused with an OEM. Like us.

Charles if you are posting advertising I'm going to have to ask you to stop. The fair use policy you agreed to forbids this.

Being that MSI *is* a Taiwanese company there's not really that much to correct. Regardless, I'm just doing my job so keep your posts factual and non-biased and everything will be cool.

Nothing personal. Keep up the good posts.

If you are in the UK (which i think you are) try http://www.tiny.com (or something along those lines)

They make relatively high spec laptops for relatively low prices. I bought one with and AMD XP(m) 2600 512Mb Ram, 40Gb Hdd, CD-rw, Wifi card, 64Mb Ati onboard graphic card.

all for about £699inc VAT. All i would say is give their extended warranty a miss. Just go for the minimum 1yr whic costs about £50. I was talked into purchasing the 3yr warranty and it pushed the price to just ove £1K!!! Not much fun when u see that on the invoice i can tell u.

If you want really high spec for an ok price try mesh computers. They are really good rigs (win lots of awards for quality etc) and dont cost too much.

good luck

Honest with out bias:

I woudl say, buy, acer or toshiba laptops as these seams to be the most reliable, for a sony, it will last 3 years tops, same with HP/compaq as these all have display issues. and soem with KB issues.

Ive worked with the acer systems for some time and there prity good and come at a good price, take a look here- http://www.gloucestertraining.no-ip.com/laptops/

this shold give you some idea- you may need to click a link on the page to see more of a range, but think! I sell sony but i dont recommend them :) and I also get to fix them!! the ones on those pages are just a small range as i have them all!!! acer ferr' is ice as its different, how many peopl edo you know who own a red laptop (or want to as the case may be)

Dell laptops are also good, I dont realy get many of theses in unless there real old ones (that a good sign) but there exspensive on the upgrades and repairs as its Dell only, bt i can get RAM and some other bits CD etc,

Ive not used or repaired a panasonic laptop they look "cheap" and would break easy

Ibuddy make some laptops which are cheap, (about £400) there only 1Gig on a VIa chip making upgrade realy cheap but limited- about 1.7G i think, but there not bad, I have some good reports from these..

I own many ASUS laptops, all for different things. One thing they have in common is the quality. They are one of the most durable units I have ever used. Check out reviews for asus laptops. They are a good notebook. The other via based ones you spoke about from tiny are not a bad notebook. Just a difference of features and proformance. The name brand notebooks I would stay away from. We do too much notebook repair here for me to want a name brand.
