This Sony PCV-RX550 won't let me install win XP Home. I have tried different harddrives, cdroms and "A" drives. Anybody out there seen this problem report before? "File setupdd.sys could not be loaded. The error code is 4"

Perhaps the CD is corrupted? Try getting a replacement CD and see if that works.

Hey man, I had the same exact error, and all I did was disabled any caching in the bios, and XP installed fine, but now I'm having the problem that the computer just keeps locking up inside windows. It also at first was just automatically giving a blue screen (so quick that I couldn't see what it said), and would reboot. I'm not sure what the problem is now. As for you, you might be able to fix it by disabling any caching. Hope this helps.

You disabled the CPU cache in the BIOS!? Didn't the install take like three weeks?

Remove and plug your ram back in. You should be able to run set up. Your Ram is either defected or need to reseat in its slot.

I needed to install a new OS and I disabled any cacheing and didn't work for me (new motherboard, new memory and new Harddrive). So I'm guessing that the CD (OS win xp pro) is corrupt.

Following advice on this site, I checked the RAM by removing one and then the other. It worked!

I had two 512 MB DDR 400mhz Kingston chips from the same kit (Dual Channel). One worked, the other didn't. This was in my ECS 755-A2 motherboard with an Athlon 64 3200+ CPU.

I tried both Windows XP Professional and Windows XP 64 Bit trial edition. Had same problems, until I removed the bad RAM stick.. Everything seems to work fine now!

Well done all you with the RAM tip. Spot on, you saved my PC going out of the window.

all you people thinking about posting about the ram, please note that just about everyone in this discussion has said check the ram, but i had problems with my computer that was nothing to do with the ram, see previous post. Now what i done to get mine to work was to turn off all the caching etc and slow down the ram timings in the bios, basically have the computer running at a much slower pace, and after a couple of attempts with different random errors windows was installed and i was able to reset the motherboard back to the original state.

Try changing the jumper setting on your hard drive from cable select to single. It worked for me.

Thanks about the RAM info originally tried to reseat them and got the same error so moved them around (have 2 put the one that was in the second slot in the first and vice versa) and is working.

I had error code 4, and sometimes 14.
It turned out the BIOS was running the PC100 memory at 133Mhz...
I corrected to 100MHz and all is wonderfull :-)

Hello PHIL
Some very good advice in the foregoing posts which could be applicable.

Take a look at the Sony site

You may find something interesting in the FAQ'S

Regards to all
Take care

I recently purcahsed a maxtor diamond plus 9 internal hdd due to the other one failing.

I wanted to clean install an OS so i used my Dell product recovery cd to install Win 98.

This worked fine but then after restarting it got as far as the Win 98 blue cloud and logo screen and then jsut restarted itself. I have tried all the other options.

I decided then to install from dos Windows XP, which for some reason doesnt boot up hence i had to go through win 98 first.

Again this went ok with only a few files having problems of transfer.

Then when it finished again it restarted but then i was met with this error message, but instead of code 4 it is CODE 14.

ARRGH.

I have not a clue what to do next. Can anyone help?
