does the BIOS see the new WD when installed as a storage drive? Does it see all 640Gigs?

If it doesn't see the disc in the drive it doesn't sound like a hard drive problem but with either the disk itself or the CD/DVD ROM. Got a different ROM you can try?

Loved the angry hippy rants on spam etc :) Spent hours there!

I have just left the Ubuntu install in place, and I would guess the 640 will be detected as a secondary drive under Ubuntu - and perhaps under XP as well - although I am never gonna know, as I am not going to back to XP on that system!

Thanks for your reply.

Hi hello

I also had this problem before with my laptop. I dont know if you have repaired your pc as of now. What I did was I just simply changed my memory(RAM) and my unit works just fine. I hope that my experience could also help someone out there.

Thanks! Thanks a million! Thanks again!

After many days I finally found this post! (And more importantly .... SOLVED MY PROBLEM!!!) i.e. I removed a questionable (OEM) RAM strip from my 5 year old (unmolested, bone stock) Gateway Laptop.

A brief history ...Bios battery died resulting in .. Set the date and time .... DUMMY,. each time that I booted/started my Laptop! After many months I replaced the bios battery; but first I destroyed the case, locating the (dead) CR1220 battery. Problem solved, booted fine TWO TIMES, but then it WOULD NOT boot. And I kept getting message: File setupdd.sys could not be loaded. .... error code is 4. and THE REST IS HISTORY!

Thanks again!

It's a Ram issue, I only swapped the memory chips then every thing went well.

I had the same problem fixing my buddy's computer. I could not boot a Windows or Linux CD to fix the corrupted OS. I could get Memtest86 to run and it reported bad memory modules. I replaced both of the memory modules and I could then boot from the optical drive and repair the installation.

Not that it matters much but the moving of the ram sticks worked for me also. I did notice that the one I moved was pretty hot compared to the other.
