Please can anyone help!!. I have been attacked by the W32.Spybot Worm, despite being up to date with my Norton Anti virus & firewall. I visited the Symantic website and I think that I have removed it. However, I think I may have removed more than the virus (damn idiot that I am!). I now have no CD-Writer or DVD R/RW, although they are enabled and have the latest drivers. There is a nice exclaimation mark next to them both in device manager. They are opening and closing fine, but I think that I have done something while I was fidling around in the registery and msconfig.
I have only had my system a week and I could do without this!. I did try and re install windows (DVD worked while booting up) , but the boot cd did not detect my hard drives (both SATA) - so how would I go about this if all else fails.
Thanks!! Ruth

hm.... you said that there was an exlaimation mark next to the CD Writer and DVD R/RW. You mean in System > Device Manager > !blah blah blah. What does it say when you go into the propeties of them. Right click > Properties i think. Usually it says what the problem is down there.

Go to device manager and remove both the devices with the question marks and reboot.

Once you reboot, if you have XP or any OS after Windows ME, the devices will reappear and they should be functional.

Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > Your CD/DVD drive > Select problem drive > Right-Click > Properties > Under device status.

What does it say. If there is an exclaimation mark, usually means some kind of code problem. I think. So what does your thing say?

The message reads 'Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41).
This seems strange seeing it showed up in add new hardware!

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

Now we're talking. Firstly, you said that Windows can detect the device right? on start up. That means the device must be plugged in properly for it to detect right? but doesn't windows still detect something even if it's not plugged in properly?

secondly, computers these days suck. :) The old computers, yes, slow but they didn't cause this much trouble. Back then the games were much better and more involved also. Didn't need these computers we use now. :)

thirdly, just couldn't help my self above not now. but as i said, try checking the plugs. i'm sure windows detect things, even if not pluged in right, it will still detect but with errors.

go to msconfig again, click on Normal Startup, then go back to the Startup tab and recheck things to the way you want. That's if what you said about msconfig might be affecting this.

Sorry Ruth,
I was at work and couldn't really get into trying to help you completely.

Can you try to update the driver for the cd-rom?

The exclamation mark in yellow usually means the device does not have the correct driver.

right click on anyone of the devices and select properties. From there look for the driver tab and now select update driver.

Apparently the OS does not have the correct driver. If you got a cd with a driver for the devices you should install those drivers.
Hopefully this will help you out. Let us know how you make out.

I have done as you suggested and checked for driver updates - Windows tells me I have the latest drivers. Both my CD & DVD will open / close and 'spin discs' - but thats all!. When I was trying to get rid of the virus I was asked by Norton if I wanted to delete the files, I think that maybe now this might not have been such a good idea . The two files I deleted were both called C:\\Windows\System32\video.32sd.exe (whoops!!!???). I thought that I might try to re install windows, but I'm stuck on this front too. My motherboard is an Asus Deluxe running two 200gig SATA hard drives, when I start to boot from my windows cd ( the CD works when not in windows) I get the message that hard drives cannot be detected. I have seen others are having the same problem with this motherboard. I am as you can tell a novice, so I need to be told what to do in a very easy way!. I think that I got this virus by downloading the latest version of iTunes - all my problems started from this (I have since deleted this program). Why didn't Norton detect this virus before it infected my system? it say's that I have the latest virus updates when I run Live Update.
Sorry to be a pain! Ruth

when you went to check for updates, how did you check for updates. device manager doesn't have newer drives unless you have downloaded them from the internet. the only drives it will have so far from what i've seen are current ones and old ones. new ones must be downloaded from the net and installed.

I haven't come accross a problem like this before but i'll try my best to look into it. gonna check around now.

Hi! I have sorted it out I think!. I went to the Microsoft Knowledge base which had advice on the Error 41 code. It came up with the following:

CD-ROM Access Is Missing and Messages Cite Error Code 31, Code 32, Code 19, or Code 39 After You Remove Easy CD Creator in Windows XP
Applies To
This article was previously published under Q314060
IMPORTANT: This article contains information about modifying the registry. Before you modify the registry, make sure to back it up and make sure that you understand how to restore the registry if a problem occurs. For information about how to back up, restore, and edit the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry

For a Microsoft Windows 2000 version of this article, see 270008.

SYMPTOMS
After you remove either compact disc (CD) recording software or other software from your computer, your computer may exhibit the following behavior:
In My Computer, there is no access to your CD-ROMs.
In Device Manager, the following error message appears in connection with any CD-ROM device that is part of your computer system:

The device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device (Code 31).
Device Manager displays the following error message:

A driver for this device was not required, and has been disabled (Code 32 or Code 31).
You may also receive an error Code 39 message that indicates that the driver is corrupted.

Device Manager displays the following error Code 19 message, which means that the registry returned some unknown result:

Your registry might be corrupted. (Code 19)
You may also receive the following error message:

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)
RESOLUTION
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:
Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
Quit Registry Editor.NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the software vendor for assistance.

Restart your computer.
STATUS
This is a known issue that can occur when you remove Easy CD Creator version 5.01 or earlier or DirectCD version 3.01c or earlier. This issue may also occur with Easy CD Creator version 5.01 and with DirectCD 3.01d or later.
MORE INFORMATION
There may be other third-party CD-writing software products that exhibit similar behavior. Some or all of the troubleshooting steps in this article might apply if such a product also adds entries under the UpperFilters or LowerFilters value in the registry, either by adding its own filter drivers or by removing the registry keys and values outlined in this article that begin with:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

I followed the instructions and Yipee!!! I have my drives back!
Can I now assume that I am virus free (no virus is being detected now in Norton Full System Scan)?. Why did Norton let this virus onto my system seeing I have the latest updates?

Thank you so very much for your help. I am hoping to take the Microsoft A+ Course in September - I'm really hooked on Computers now!. This site is sooooo helpful!
Best Wishes Ruth

Ruth,
That is awesome news and thanks for giving everyone your solution to the problem.

That was one thing I was thinking of mentioning, but many are afraid or don't know anything about editing your registry.

Good luck on your exam. I plan to take mines this fall also. I am in class till October and tonight I have a final which counts for 50% of my score.
Wish me luck....

Jay

Ruth, congrats on getting it fixed. You say you have norton AV?

If so have you configured it to auto protect (ie scan all incoming and outgoing data for suspicious activities)?

A lot of people dont do this and it ends up biting them in the bum.

good luck

adam

I haveanother piece in the Jigsaw of why my DVD / CD are causing problems - all to do with my installing iTunes for my iPod. Every time I install it to try and get it to import or burn CD's my drives vanish into the ether. It was working O.K. before all the problems with the virus. I have visited the Apple web site and there does seem to be an issue with this product and burning drives. I am installing the latest version from thier website in the hope that this will fix the problem - Knowing my luck not!. Any ideas would be greatly appreiciated!
I have got Norton configured correctly, I just can't understand it!
Anyway take care Guys
Ruth

Ruth, thanx for posting the solution. I hate it when people find a solution and don't post down what it is. Another guy has the same problem, noone knows the answer except the for the people who cracked it.

Good Job.

Me Again!
Sorry that I did not get back to you last night but the whole Country were glued to the TV watching England being beaten by Portugal in Euro 2004! (It was going to happen!).

Anyway I have installed the latest downloads from Apple, but to no avail. Looks like I will have to convert my music to MP3 using my Creative software then import into the iTunes library. I would rather do this than keep losing my drives & having to mess about in my registry.

It is such a pain as I have only just had this machine built as a pressie for myself (a first!) as I have to go and have an Operation for Breast Cancer in a couple of weeks so I thought I would buy myself something that I really, really wanted to cheer myself up. At least all this has kept my mind off things!!.

My machine is:
AMD 64 3400
Creative Audgy Platinum Pro ZS
Sapphire Radeon 9800 128MB All-in-Wonder
1.5 gb Kingston memory
2x 200gb maxtor diamondmax plus8 8mb cache SATA hard drives
+those pesky CD & DVD RW's!

I am so pleased with it! I can't wait for the new 64 bit Windows to come out so I can really try it out!

Where about in the world are you?. As you have probably guessed I live in England (yes it is raining as usual!).
With Every Good Wish Ruth

>> Code 41 Error solution worked
Thanks for this info, all who contributed to this thread. I had just decided to uninstall an older third-party CD creation software, because I had installed a new DVD drive and the newer, better Nero software that came with it a month ago. Then the Code 41 error appeared with the same symptoms (drivers were installed and working, but there was a yellow exclamation next to the listing in Device Manager). I edited the registry exactly as instructed on the Microsoft page, rebooted, and the problem is solved. Me happy. Thank you.

Just as an addition for you - the probable reason for xp not being able to see your hard drives on re-installing is that very early in the process at the bottom of the screen it asks if you need to instal 3rd party scsi or raid drivers and to press F2 or is it F6 - anyway these will then allow xp to see your drives

Thanks so much Ruth!

I don't know how you found the answer so fast. I had the same symptoms - my cdroms disappearing- and I have been spending all day trying to get them back. I tried your cure and Yippee! I have my drives back.
I really don't know how this problem came about. I have McAfee for virus protection and I have not had a virus notice recently. One thing I did do is try to Norton Ghost my hard drive and I got the BSOD. I was only able to restart if I chose "last profile for successful startup" after I hit F8 on startup. It was shortly after this that I noticed I didn't have my cdroms anymore. But this could be a coincidence?

Anyway thanks for posting and thanks for this group!

I had this same problem. The only thing I noticed was that I had uninstalled the iTunes program before this problem occured. Your fix got everything going again.
