not legally.
it's probably proprietary crap anyway, not xp pro, but a formatting disc(s) with xp pro, del software, drivers for your laptop, and lots of crap

It says on it: Reinstallation CD Microsoft Windows XP Professional including service pack 1a.
Is there anyway to know if I can do a clean install with it ?

If you registered the copy that's on the laptop, then the answer is no.
If you did'nt register then no problem. Brian is right though, I would
check to make sure it's not a driver and utility disk.

If it's worth doing, then it's probably illegal.

I think it does if you have to get critical updates and service packs online.

Yes Brian it has a Dell logo on it.
Now, other then saying on it: Reinstallation CD, Microsoft Windows XP Professional Including Service Pack 1a.
It Says: This CD is not for reinstallation of programs or DRIVERS.

So what do you think?

If it's a full version XP Pro and not a restore disc, then there are a couple of things that might happen if you tried to use it on another machine

1. The version of XP Pro might be tied to the Dell BIOS (which if you look on eBay at Dell XP discs, they mostly say 'can only be used on a Dell machine'), in which case it won't work

2. When you come to activate it, you won't be able to, as the product ID is already in use on the laptop, and you're only allowed to use XP on one machine (legally).

All you can do is try it and see what happens, but I reckon (2) will cause the whole thing to fall over.

You can try it but the disk is probably only for that laptop. If it does work just feed MS some story to get you copy of XP activated.

I have installed the win xp Dell cd on a different computers. (one of them wasn't even a dell) It should work. The only thing is that you will have to register it with in 30 days. Just download an xp product key changer, change the key and you should be fine.

You don't need to register XP pro-not that I'm condoning using it on two machines, natch. However, I think it's quite likely that the disc you have is keyed to your laptop mobo, so be prepared to fork out for a new OS if you format your drive and the install doesn't work.
