mmmmmmm, I don't agree with this article. I personally like the game and my x800 XT looks really nice with it. I noticed the author of this thread stated the characters had square features. Well my reply to that is, "Get rid of your GeForce2 32m Video Card!". I am not seeing any of these flawed features you are mentioning. Oh well, it's all opinion and in this case fact according to this guy. I love Doom 3 and it has scared the s**t out of me a couple of times, lol.

A 3.6GHz Pentium 4 with 2GB of memory and a GeForce 6800 Ultra Extreme Edition is hardly GeForce MX level wouldn't you agree?

Please make the following modifications to your cfg file in the base directory, and then re-review the game:

seta r_multiSamples "4"
seta image_downSizeLimit "0"
seta image_ignoreHighQuality "0"
seta image_downSizeBumpLimit "0"
seta image_downSizeSpecularLimit "0"
seta image_downSizeBump "0"
seta image_downSizeSpecular "0"
seta image_useCache "0"
seta image_cacheMegs "256"
seta image_cacheMinK "200"
seta image_usePrecompressedTextures "0"
seta image_useNormalCompression "0"
seta image_useAllFormats "1"
seta image_useCompression "0"
seta image_roundDown "0"
seta image_forceDownSize "0"
seta image_downSize "0"
seta image_lodbias "-1"
seta image_anisotropy "8"
seta image_filter "GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR"

I'm sure your system can run at at least a stable 30fps with those modifications... the framerate was fluctuating too much for it to be playable with my system.

I already made those changes and have also unpacked the pak files into my /base directory, which did give a nice boost in performance. Take note though that I'm complaining about the visuals of the game, not the performance it gives with my system.

Yeah, I did, but that bogs down the performance on the 6800, still playable, just not at 1600x1200 anymore.

Sorry but screw the visuals...this games sound is incredible! Never had I heard 3d surround sound done so well in a game. FaryCry has it, but it just doesnt compare with a game trying to scare the $#!@ out of you. If you dont have 5.1 channel audio playing this game, you are really missing out. Im fine with High Quality, everything on, and AA at 4x 1280x1024. Then again, I put more money into my Audio setup then my Video. The best you can get for Video is either X800 or 6800, but thats it. With Audio, you can get a AudigyZS Platinum (~$250), maybe a Onkyo Receiver (~$400) and BOSE surround sound speakers (~$1000). Hopefully get around about 1000watt total output. Then play Doom3 and see what you think....

WELL THEN? tell us what it looked like in THAT mode.... that's what it was all about in the first place. Q3 was hardly playable in top quality mode when it first came out and with lower settings it looked like crap too.

And O yeah, why not just try it in 1024x768 mode, with al that AA and filtering and stuff it is more than enuff.
Hell, the die hard q3 players still use 640x480!

LOL, I refuse to play a game over 8x6 soley because I need a refresh rate of at least 120hz. It's all in what you're used to really. And, I just craknked my res to 16x12 and turned all optionsa on and all settings to high, and I got a stable 20fps...lol, then my eyes fell out because of the refresh rate of 72. :/ back to 8x6 with all settings at medium. <3

"Yeah, I did, but that bogs down the performance on the 6800, still playable, just not at 1600x1200 anymore."

Okay... what do you consider "playable"?

Because on my 5900XT I was able to attain a SOLID 30fps when moving to Ultra @ 1280x1024 in every instance except for the combination of fog and an imp. Not to mention I'm using an LCD monitor that has a max refresh rate of 75hz.

If you had made those changes to the config, you would not be saying that the textures are that bad.

I gave you values that disable downsizing and compression entirely, with 4x multisampling to boot... which means the textures are rendered exactly how they were when they were created.

Do me a favor, look at these screenshots. http://geocities.com/teq_guy
or
http://usera.imagecave.com/teqguy/

If they look anywhere near your 6800, then that's your fallacy, not the game's engine. My boxing match with Pinky was rendered entirely without downsizing or compression... but for some reason the image hosting is messing with the image.... still a funny shot.

I don't care about the graphics too much since i have a fx5200 but i am enjoying the game very very much. I like the story, the creativity and the monsters. I think it is like art on the terror side. I have played farc cry and it's such a stupid story and the sounds can't compare with doom 3's creepy sounds. Mayb far cry has realistic images or jus photos of beatiful spots should i say? Instead of creating and inventing facilities such the ones in doom 3. I repeart i don't care to have a sun shining while i kill unknown humans but i like the creations of the these horrible monsters invented from a fantastic brain. Its like art! I don't like a well draw of a sun i like a distorted sun that shines a black light!

Sean,

That's exactly the images I got, you don't notice the low poly count on the monster? The hands? The low res textures on the walls? C'mon that's soo '99. And the storyline isn't really there either, but since it is Doom 3 I wasn't really expecting much. Doom and Doom 2 didn't offer much in that respect, and I wasn't counting on Doom 3 to be any different either. I was however looking forward to the next leap in game visuals, there Doom 3 did dissapoint and didn't live up to all the hype. But since it is a column, this is just my opinion, feel free to think otherwise, I respect your opinion.

Have a good weekend,

If you vaguely remember... Doom III was originally showcased on the Geforce 3 Ti. If it had been released then, processors would've been the major bottleneck and nobody would've been happy.

If ID soft would've released the game two years ago, everyone would be praising them for their accomplishments. Granted, their 15 minutes of fame would've been blown out of the water by FarCry... but at least they would've recieved the acclaim they deserved.

It's because I originally fell in love with the demo showcased at E3 on a Geforce 3, that I have to defend the game. Doom III is truly an underdog that was pushed out of the gates far later than the rest of the pack, and there's nothing more anyone can say.

I hope everyone knows how the computing industry is... hardware is always going to stay one step ahead of the software, making it hard to develop for current generation systems, while still keeping past and future hardware in mind.

ID soft failed to re-develop their engine for the current generation cards... since they were shooting for the Geforce 3 line, they probably only actually hit the Geforce 4 target.

If that's the finished game at it's highest resolution something is wrong. What happened to those beautifully smooth , lifelike creatures we saw in magazines and various websites? The creature callled pinky looked so much better in those previews that seeing shots of it close up had people drooling for the game release. Now the game has arrived, it seems there's been a horrilble bait and switch. Great, cutting edge artwork has become something out of the original Half Life. I'm scared to go buy it now..

I have a 6800 GT, I play at 1600 1200 ultra.
It has a stutter once in a while when loading in new textures (I'm gonna defrag, I unpacked the pak files yesterday but didn't defrag), but beyond thta it's smooth.

Hrmm....I prefer Unreal Tournament 2004 over Doom III.....i think UT2004 blows both Fary Cry and D3 out of the sky.

I kind of agree with sander on this one. The gameplay is something that we haven't seen in awhile, it has the atmosphere of movies like Event Horizon. But the graphics are what they have been trying to wow us with for the past how many years now? Id just waited too long to release the game. When the first screen shots were released they looked incredible but now after playing Far Cry they're not quite so over the top. They're still really good, but not quite the huge leap forward over anything we have seen before that they were touting it would be. I think that HL2 will fall into the same trap too because of its delays. Regardless being an old doom fan I still had to buy the game and play it 8hrs + a day until i beat it.

>> Again, what happened to the graphics?
Let me say this one more time. What happened to the cutting edge graphics? What I'm seeing as screenshots from the release version of the game are nowhere near as good as the screenshots that were being published in gamer magazines a year ago. Did id cut back on the graphics to make the game playable on more systems? Were the shots we were seeing in magazines even generated in the game engine, or created in photoshop and sent out as in game action? The screenshots of "pinky" that are linked to in this forum look like old Glide shots and are NOTHING like what we seeing even 3 years ago. Eventually I'll play this game, but I'm not spending my money on it.
