I keep getting the error message ati2dvag.dll has stopped working. Looking on the internet I have seen that this seems to happen to a lot of people, however I have not yet seen a definitive answer. When I get this display message the screen resolution drops to 4 bit and below 600x800. When I restart my computer it seems to fix it, however this generally happens every 2 or 3 hours.
It happens more often the more I am doing, and is more likely to occur when I am on the internet. I installed the update of my ATI driver and that seemed to work for a while, however it all started up again.
Please help, below are the specifications of my laptop.

Compaq Evo N610c
Windows XP professional
version 2002
service pack 2
Mobile Intel Pentium 4 1.80GHz
1.18 GHz, 256MB of Ram
BIOS: EPP runtime BIOS - Version 1.1
DirectX version 9.0c
Mobility Radeon 7500 - version 8

Main driver: ati2dvag.dll
version: 6.14.0010.6346 (english)
Mini vdd: ati2mtag.sys
ddi version: 9 (or higher)

If you need any more information please tell me and I'll look for it.
Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

Hi Caroline,

Welcome to HWA.

There are a number of possible causes for this. To get the ball rolling, a few questions:

Do you have AV software with up to date definitions, and have you done a virus scan recently?
Do you use a spyware scanner?
Did you completely uninstall the previous diplay driver before you installed the new one?
Did you change any hardware or add any software just prior to getting the error message?

I have up to date McAfee virus scan and firewall that both automatically update off the internet. I did a virus scan the other day. I use Spybot and adaware fairly regularly. I did not completely uninstall the ATI software before installing the new one, so I will try uninstalling it all and reinstalling it now and see if that helps.

Thanks

Hey,

That helped a bit, the problem is more sporadic. However it is still happening, is there anything else you suggest I try?

Check your IRQ's for conflicts.

Go here:

http://www.omegadrivers.net

and try the appropriate drivers for your system.

Turn off fast writes in the Bios (if it's currently on)

Check compaq site for possible Bios updates

Try removing ATI control panel and see how you go

If you get no joy with any of these, get back to us and I'll start scratching my head again.

I have the same problem with the ati2dvag.dll driver. The problem didn't even go away after i reinstalled the whole system. Updating the drivers for my radeon 9200 SE doesn't seem to help either. I receive the message either when i'm playing a game or watching a video. Does anyone have any new ideas.

Greg,
Have you downloaded and used the ATI tool for completely removing drivers?
You can download it from their site.

In addition, I only found one reference to that ati2dvag.dll message you receive on the ATI site.

check it out: http://www.ati.com/support/infobase/4535.html

I would try removing the exisiting drivers first and then reinstalling the new current drivers available on the ATI site.

Like Caroline said, completly removing old drivers and installing new ones seems to help a bit, but it doesn't solve the whole problem. In my case the computer hangs now and then (games, videos even screensaver when being deactivated). Could it be that i'm installing the wrong driver? I installed the catalyst 4.7 Single Bundle that supports my radeon 9200. Should i perhaps install an even older driver?

ENsure your using mobile chip down load for the driveers, there is a utill of fully remove ATI from your PC on thier site.

( I LMAO at reinstall XP comment) go to the windows file direcory, delete the ati***.dll file there, then open the SYSTEM32 File delete from there, then the window drivers folder and remove the ATI files from there.

THe newer ATI drivers require full runtime files, VB 4 5-6-and there are some new one by sun but im not to sure of the V#.
you will also need the .NET frame work files. (MS.con) I mean MicroSoft.com

Try some older drivers as the NEW cat, Etc is having a BAD effect on alot of peoples computers.

Make sure you install the correct drivers fro the card, as It is mostly listed under the mobile, even though it say RADION **** its a mobile in a laptop. check under system > hardware fro the exsact model you have..

once you have install check the BIOS settign for the correct setting for the appeture on the VGA (VRAM) to make sure there is plently there.

I've noticed some of u stating that u are running SP2. that is probably half the problem right there!. I have a Radeon 9800 Pro on XP Home SP1. I have never encountered this issue before using any version of ATI's drivers. I currently use Catalyst 4.9 and haven't had any issues with it.

as far as needing the .net files to use the newest drivers that is incorrect. you can use the new drivers and control panel, just not the media center thing that comes with it, for that u need the .net files, which I haven't installed either. you can just download the driver and control panel instead of the whole media thing, which I did run into when I tried to install, because I didn't pay attention to the new options they had for the newest drivers.

anyways, what I've said isn't really any help, so now I'll list a couple things that might help some people. for those willing to do a reinstall of windows and only update to SP1 instead of SP2 I'd say stick with SP1 for now. I've updated my pc to SP2 and promptly uninstalled it due to the fact that it wouldn't run properly and kept trying to turn the firewall on and so forth even tho I changed the settings to NOT do so! it's my PC, and I don't like my OS trying to run the show for me.

secondly, when installing catalyst drivers, it is VERY important that u install your chipset drivers before the ATI drivers, specifically the GART drivers. this controls the AGP bus, and if it's not done properly you can run into some problems. anytime I do an update of my chipset drivers I do a reinstall of my graphics drivers afterword. seems to keep things running smoothly and isn't something that needs to be done, but I do it anyways.

and lastly, as others suggested, it is very good to uninstall all previous driver files before updating to new ones, it keeps files from being jumbled up by your OS and will cut down on conflicts of this type. there is a program called ATI tool that you can use to completely wipe out any ATI driver files from your computer to make sure it's clean. I use this tool to do so when updating.

sorry to re-open an old thread but...
my pc was running just fine until this afternoon. I finally decided to install XP SP2. When I re-booted to complete the SP2 install, I got the same error "ati2dvag driver has stopped working". All I did was the SP2 install and it broke the ati driver. I uninstalled SP2 and all returned to normal

What is the conflict with SP2 and is there a cure? I checked MS and their Knowledge base but found nothing. Is this ati driver the problem or is it something else and the ati driver just happens to pay the price and gets damaged??

I'd like to install SP2 so any help would be appreciated

m

i just want to add that:

i got the problem when i was with XP pro.

then i formated my hardrive and reinstall a new XP pro SP1, the problem still.

then 3 weeks ago, i upgraded to SP2, still the same problem.

Conclusion : i don't think because of XP Service Pack.

I had the same problem as everybody's describing, about every twenty minutes. Long story short, here's how I fixed it:

1. uninstall everything ati (I dunno that this is completely necessary, but it's easy enough to throw in the disk and reinstall everything again real quick like.)

2. throw in the disk and reinstall everything again real quick like....BUT do a custom reinstall. Do NOT install the control panel when given the optional component choices. Note that in my case this automatically unchecks the box to install the ati display drivers too...you gotta recheck them before continuing.

3. kick back and enjoy the gold and platinum and diamonds and rocks from pluto that come spitting out of your cd drive.

the control panel isn't necessary to run the individual programs; they're still installed and available in the start menu, or you can create shortcuts/quicklaunch/etc/ to em...the only thing missing really is the hub that is the icon in the system tray. post back if it works!
