Hi there!

I have had similar problems, i.e. : Complete freeze and lockup of screen and keyboard/mouse when watching DVD for more than 5 minutes, or when playing games (Quake3) and especially when watching demos. One particular demo (161 kb, cracktro from Blizzard) would always freeze screen+keyboard+mouse when switching from 2d to 3d. When it would occasionally not freeze, the 3d cubes would move very sluggish, not smooth. The demo did run "fine" with pure VGA drivers installed, so I messed very long time with the ATI Catalyst Control Center to wiggle and toggle any possible AGP/3d-graphics card option imaginable. To no avail.

I have the following hardware configuration : AMD 1200, Gigabyte GA-7IXE4, Radeon 9200 SE, plus a few cards (Highpoint 370 IDE Controller, NEC USB 2.0 Controller, 3com Ethernet card 3c900) and a soundcard called "Sonic Impact S90" from Diamond Multimedia with Aureal Vortex chipset.

------------------------------------------------------------------
THE SOUNDCARD WAS THE CULPRIT !!!
-------------------------------------------------------------------

I removed the Sonic Impact S90, went back to Sb16 ISA PNP and everything worked fine again! Demo runs, cubes smooth, games work for hours now, DVD playing works now, etc.

UNBELIEVABLE what a bad sound card can do ! And it's even a PCI sound card.... what a shame!

And that's it for today...

Hmmm. It seems every search I do for this same problem, I find thread after thread!

I didnt know mine was ati2dvag until a BSOD was there long enough for me to see it mentioned as the culprit.

Ive just built 2 identical systems in the last week.

CH Chips M860 (Via 754)
1 gig Crucial DDR400 PC3200 matched 512s that are specified as compatible)
ATI 9250 256MB
Sempron 3.1
SATA Maxtor 200GB
16X DVD+/-R /RAM
Floppy

It has been a torrid time all the way through, with initial problems for (a) memory failing memtest86 and (b) installing XP Pro SP2. This was resolved by flashing the MB bios. Not a good start!

Memory now tests fine and Windoz installed ok.

However, I am now getting the constant freezing, complete lockups, black screens and BSOD. This happens even without opening any apps - or if I do, even something like Outlook knackers it. It is 100% definately not overheating. Its not on long enough. The case is fitted with rear remove 120cm fan and 4 front in 80cm fans. Its like a fridge inside. The CPU heatsink doesnt even get warm to the touch. Bios temp records CPU temp and system in the 20s. Thats impressive - though I conceed Ive not had the oppertunity to put it to any real tests.

One machine however seems far far worse than the other.

Both have been built for the kids. One is able to play his Sonic the hedgehog without any problems. I only bought 512MB for each machine - and with both now in the problem one as its been fitted with 2x256MB of PC2700. I cant say I am convinced its stable. Ive certainly wittnessed driver resets, so its just a case of better than the other. Nothing more.

Ive installed every new driver available for this motherboard (inc 4in1) and have installed various versions of the catalyst software (using the uninstall tool to remover first.)

The only time this machine is stable, is when it is software driven. Obviously if I wanted a machine of those capabilities, I could have bought a 486!

Of the "remedies" mentioned in this thread, One I have tried to locate but been unable, is to use smartgart to amend write settings and AGP speed. It says this is locked in the bios, but I am unable to see any mention of AGP speeds.

The one regarding PCI to PCI bridge.... will this slow the expected performamce of the machine down?

I just wished I had researched this a bit better. Could have saved myself a lot of time - not to mention heartache for me - and the kids being unable to use their new toy.

I have been having the same BSOD problem with my computer. Again, this is the ATI2DVAG.DLL one. I think it may be a problem with ATI's driver(s), since I have had the problem ever since I had the computer. Nothing that I tried could fix it. The problem is not as bad: it shows up on average every 2 hours of gameplay only, especially with Half-Life 2 it seems to do it more often. I have not however tried to update drivers since I have the Radeon 345M IGP, which I have heard does not support ATI's new drivers.

Ok all im gonna say is this i removed Service Pack 2 then i went here http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=914 and downloaded that but first use atis tool that gets rid of all the ati already on your computer. Then when you install that you need to install it twice, first install it in its program files which is the default then install it in C:/ATI/Support k then restart after it tells you to then right click on desktop then properties then settings then find advanced then click on smartgart and change it to 4x on your agp speed ok. Tweak your settings to how you like them then it should work, as it did for me i know all comps are different but its worth a try.

its xp home with all of the updates but todays release. I will try your link first but the only difference between her problem and the other posts is that the bsod occurs seconds after the desktop and icons appear.

Yea ok do this go to control panel add or remove programs then when the programs come up theres like a little drop down menu click on the show up dates then look for windows service pack 2 then uninstall that and then install the drivers i showed before then when ur comp wants you to update it again when you click on the install icon that pops up click custom install and pick anything besides service pack 2 and then you can click on service pack 2 and click around that area something like do not inform me of this update again. That is what i did and mine is running awesome.

Yes same problem with me, suddenly BSOD after the Windows logo. So I can only enter Windows from safe mode, which from this mode I can't set anything about the ATI settings.

Btw, my laptop is FujitsuSiemens, Windows Home SP2, ATI mob radeon 9700, and didn't changed anything and suddenly this problem occur.

Thanks

Ok I've think I solve my Issues

My Mobo KM4M (http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=KM4M-L)
with Via Chipset....
2 dimms DDR 266 PC2100 (133 Kingston of 1.5v each one)
Virus XP..er.. Windows XP SP2
And the Star of the problem: ATI RADEON 9550

Right! My own proble was the VPU restart every between 5 and 15 min in 3d Games, so I do almost verythin you done on the 11 pages of this thread.

I don't change my MOBO...

So, to make the long story a short story (Así se dice???) I do the folowing (bellow I'll explain the "why" of every step)

-In the Device Manager I Change "CPU to AGP VIA Driver" for "PCI to PCI Standar PCI bridge" (sorry if don't see the exact word, in mine pc you can read "Controladora VIA de CPU a AGP)
-'till this moment, the games works pefect, but i don't have the AGP 8x performances for me...i pay for it!
-I Save the my work And turn off my PC, the i Extract my RAM to examine the volts requeriments (2.5v Each DDR)
-I put them back in teh same slot (I don't switch them)
-I Start my PC and i go to BIOS Conf. I Set Manually the RAM..my mobo put by default 2.6v to the RAM (They Overclock my ram by default!!!) so i change it to 2.5v, also i put the dram clock to 133 (instead "by speed" and the Dram mode to "Ultra".
-I Disable the Spread Spectrum option.
-I go to Windows's Device Manager and install the "VIA CPU to AGP2.0/AGP3.0 Contoller" from the 5.04A Hyperion ia drivers (the via 4in1 drivers with another name).
-NOTE: I use "VIA CPU to AGP2.0/AGP3.0 Contoller" 'couse i Windows suggestme "Show Compatible device" or how do you reas it on an english windows vers.
-I Put all my setting to the max (AGP 8x, AGP write On, etc..) And teh games work cool, no hagns-up, no VPU recovers.

Conclution (Conclusiones, a ver corríjanme!)
The problem ARE the VIA and ATI hardware and Drivers. So, you must check if you don't overclocking your hardware "by default". Check the IRQs, chage hradware of slot...mmake stable your system. I can not change AGP 1.5v to 1.6v (thas was my idea, instead i change my DDR volt) but I think the dude who do that, give real 1.5v...maybe his mobo has fail...
Force the via install of hardware, becouse setup.exe of the hyperion didn't install the AGP driver on my system.

Hope can you made something. Remeber the magic work Make them Stable!

Hi!

I was having the same problem as most of you guys on here since about February 2005, none of the solutions that I could find on the net worked.

Kept getting BSOD and random restarts, especially when doing things that strained the laptop. Then a couple weeks ago someone told me that it was probably my computer overheating, and that I should try and work out if my fans were still working.

So I turned off the laptop, blew hardish into the back fan, and the side fan (which I think is for the CD/DVD drive?). Then when I turned on the computer the fan spluttered out a load of dust, and its been working fine ever since! The computer isn't getting hot anymore, and the fan is much quieter.

I doubt this will solve anyone elses troubles, but I didn't even think about it being the fans clogged up, so there's no harm in trying!

-Pete

Hi I also has used the PCI to PCI solution in it worked. But like you said I also want to use the AGP.

Juan V. said that:

Is this means that I must not overclock any of the hardware? And how can I force the via installation?

Thanks a lot in advance
